Preview: Cardiff City vs Leeds United (Leeds United)

Leeds United begin their 2022/23 Emirates FA Cup campaign away at Cardiff City on Sunday afternoon, 2pm, in a match live on ITV.

The match is live on ITV for supporters who haven’t been able to travel. Other than that, the head coach has plenty of decisions to make on his selection. Top scorer for the home side currently across all competitions is Mark Harris, the 24-year-old Wales international has three to his name. Four wins and a draw from the last five games followed on from three straight success for the Whites. Of course, United famously added their name to the cup in 1972. It’s a change from league action for both teams who will be looking to get back to winning ways, after not tasting a victory in their last few matches.

Cardiff City vs Leeds United LIVE score and match updates (Leeds Live)

The Whites get their FA Cup campaign underway at the Cardiff City Stadium this afternoon.

Mark Hudson will be keen to see his side take the scalp of Leeds, though, and end their seven match winless run. After all of the anticipation and waiting for football to return, Leeds were rusty and useless on a dire day in the Welsh capital. He joined the club on Tuesday from RB Salzburg and he's spent the last few days training with his new teammates. The Austrian will look to make his debut as a substitute today. All six should be expected to start in Wales. Cardiff City may be just two points above the Championship drop zone, but we all know this competition is a great leveller. The head coach would not name names when he mentioned a large number of players were carrying knocks before the match. Given we have no idea who he’s talking about, we’ll have to treat everyone as available beyond Adam Forshaw, Patrick Bamford, Stuart Dallas and Luis Sinisterra. Leeds have failed to beat Cardiff in any of their last five encounters. Queens Park Rangers, Arsenal, Crawley Town and West Ham United all put pay to any hopes of a Marcelo Bielsa was not able to turn the recent record on its head either. There's no Meslier who is missing with a slight muscle knock.

Cardiff v Leeds: FA Cup third round – live (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: can the Championship side cause an upset when they host Jesse Marsch's men? Find out with Tim de Lisle.

It is, of course, a very different Leeds who make the trip to Wales today. Five and a half years later, the team in the third tier was them. The shock sent them into a slump (no league wins for two months, according to my omniscient colleague Rob Smyth) and the slump turned into a spiral. “A lot of the guys aren’t ready to play,” he says, “so even if this was a league match our line-up would be pretty similar.” He mentions Max Wober, the centre-back Leeds have just signed from RB Salzburg for a reported £11m, and says he’ll probably come off the bench. If the caption is accurate, he’s the tall kid in the picture, second from the right. The players are in the tunnel, wearing kits that a traditionalist’s dream. A potentially fun 2-3 on the pitch, much more to appreciate from the terraces. Nothing against funky colours, but I’m still recovering from going to Old Trafford the other night and finding that Bournemouth had come as a box of violet creams. But also a die-hard NotSoNastyAsTheyUsedToBeLeeds fan (blame my parents/grandparents) marching on together with the rest of them and generally trampling on anyone else’s sensible parts who gets in the way. 20 min Leeds have some possession before a slip-up at the back gives Cardiff a glimmer. 9 min It’s raining hard, and that has something to do with the first yellow card of the afternoon. Sheyi Ojo, clean through, takes it effortlessly with his left foot and slams it into the top of the net with his right.

'Message received' - Marsch targets end to cup woe (BBC Sport)

Manager Jesse Marsch is desperate to end Leeds United's recent wretched FA Cup record with the third-round visit to Cardiff City.

"When you play a Premier League team you're going to be deemed as an underdog, but we've got to focus on what we can do." "I've been reminded of it this week - it's a team that we've done well against historically and we look forward to it," Hudson added. "Angus subtly spoke to me last week and said maybe we should focus on having a good FA Cup run," Marsch said.

Leeds boss Jesse Marsch: "The whole first half we were not in sync and not aggressive enough. They have got an abundance of talent to come off the bench. Jesse Marsch waited until just shy of the hour mark to make his first substitutions, a triple change. We showed a good shape. But their goal drought ended on 24 minutes when Mark Harris broke behind the dozing Pascal Struijk to force a save from the advancing Joel Robles. Cardiff doubled their lead seven minutes later just after the half-hour mark.

Cardiff put the ball in behind, got Leeds defenders facing their own goal and Davies clipped at their heels. Top outing from the forward, who showcased his maturity in running clever lines and drawing fouls in advantageous positions for City. Sent off for a red card on the line, but had to take one for the team. Took his goal tremendously well, chesting down before rifling a half-volley into the roof of the net. Made a crucial intervention when he raced off his line to cut out a clever ball in behind the City defence. Him and Sang were outjumped by Rodrigo for the first Leeds goal.

Here are your latest Leeds United morning headlines for Monday, January 9. 'Infectious' Wilfried Gnonto hailed as a 'great purchase' after Cardiff comeback.

[Robbie Savage tips 'vulnerable' Leeds United and Jesse Marsch for Premier League relegation](https://www.leeds-live.co.uk/sport/leeds-united/robbie-savage-tips-vulnernable-leeds-25919335) [Who is Georginio Rutter? Their absences left Marsch needing to make changes at the back, with Diego Llorente, Rasmus Kristensen and Junior Firpo stepping into the side. Leeds United were wretched for an hour at Cardiff City on Sunday and then their substitutions changed the match. Even though Jesse Marsch made seven switches of his own, one fewer than Hudson, there was still more than enough in that line-up to get the job done. He’s got such a future and he’s a great purchase, a great acquisition for the football club. The Bluebirds came into this match two points above the Championship’s relegation zone with more than half of the campaign now under their belts. I like his attitude and just daft little things like the ball goes behind for a goal kick and he runs into the ground and gets the ball back. He’ll take you on the outside, he’ll take you on the inside, he can use either foot. He wants to win, he wants to play, give me the ball," Newsome told “And he’s infectious. He terrorised the Bluebirds down the left flank and had a hand in the equalising goal, as his low cross was flicked on by [Junior Firpo](https://www.leeds-live.co.uk/all-about/junior-firpo), and into the path of goal scorer [Sonny Perkins.](https://www.leeds-live.co.uk/all-about/sonny-perkins)
