The Rig, Prime Video, review: This is no slick supernatural thriller ... (iNews)

Despite a cast pulled from Game of Thrones and Line of Duty, this stormy thriller fails to deliver thanks to dodgy effects and awkward climate change metaphors.

With Alwyn (Bonnar) warning that “if you keep punching holes in the earth, eventually the earth’s going to punch back”, the drama is hardly a subtle metaphor for man’s comeuppance for draining the planet’s resources. With mysterious ash now raining down from the sky, it soon turns out to be a very bad idea indeed to be outside. But spread over nearly six hours, it feels slack and at times, a bit naff. Unfortunately, the execution doesn’t quite live up to these possibilities. Ten minutes into the first episode, things to go awry: communications systems are down, there’s a power blackout, there are unexplained tremors and their helicopters home have been diverted away. Already strained relations are pushed further by the first episode’s climax: mouthy but well-meaning Baz (Calvin Demba, Life) falling from a comms tower, even though we definitely saw him clip his safety harness securely.

The ending of new Amazon Prime horror show The Rig explained, including how it sets up a potential Season 2.

That’s the question at the heart of The Rig – why the ancestors are here, and what they want. Baz believes that if the Ancestors see what we can give – and are willing to sacrifice ourselves for their sake – then extinction might be avoided. The wave that Baz warned of in Episode 2 then approaches; a tsunami that will wipe the place out. Now it seems they aren’t happy with Pictor – the company that owns the rig – for pulling oil out of the ground. But then David Coakes shows up in Episode 5 – played by The Full Monty’s Mark Addy – and he becomes The Rig’s antagonist. The crew of the Bravo will be driven to the limits of both their loyalties and their endurance, into a confrontation with forces beyond their imagination. Magnus and his crew aboard the Kinloch Bravo oil rig are stationed off the Scottish coast in the dangerous waters of the North Sea. When the mist rolls in, the workers on Kinloch Bravo are plunged into darkness. Due to their age, characters start calling them The Ancestors. As the crew endeavour to discover what’s driving this unknown force, a major accident forces them to ask questions about who they can really trust. The show is written by David Machpherson, while the first three episodes are directed by Line of Duty helmer John Strickland. But now we’re going to dig into the show’s ending.

'The Rig' Ending, Explained: Did Magnus And Rose Stop The ... (Digital Mafia Talkies)

Created by David Macpherson, "The Rig" metamorphosizes the issues looming over the contemporary world and puts them into a narrative to create a thrilling.

Magnus, Rose, and others who were in the chopper believed that now they could go back to their home, but Coake revealed to them that they could have only gone back home if they had let him destroy the Ancestor. The crew wasn’t able to collaborate with or destroy the Ancestor, and that means that the possibility of it reaching the land is still pretty much there. They were escaping when Baz decided to stay back and give his own life in order to make the Ancestor realize that they had every intention of collaborating. Baz had a feeling that the Ancestor just wanted to be heard and that it was not the threat that Rose, Magnus, and others perceived it to be. Meanwhile, in the basement, Magnus and his team were not able to establish any sort of communication or bond, and they knew that maybe they were a bit too late to reach there. When Fulmer went down after he realized that he was also infected, he came to know that Baz was actually making sense and that he was not the villain that the people had made him to be. He was proud of the fact that he was a realist who was not afraid of making hard choices, but in reality, it was the complete opposite. He had given his guarantee that nothing would happen to Magnus’ crew, and that was something that had made the latter give it a second thought. Coake went to Harish and gave him an alluring offer: if he helped him activate the backup system and eradicate the Ancestor, then he could accompany him on the helicopter that was on its way to rescue him. Coake had very confidently said that he knew how to stop the Ancestor and that destroying it was the best way to make sure that everybody stayed alive. Whenever a person got infected by the ancient form of life that was being referred to as the Ancestor, there were a few common symptoms that were experienced by them. When Magnus proposed that they go and check the tower, she was against it, as visibility was low due to the fog, and it was quite risky to climb the ladder that led to the tower.

The Rig review: evocative thriller marks a strong start to 2023 for ... (NationalWorld)

Martin Compston, Iain Glen, and Emily Hampshire star in The Rig, an evocative new supernatural thriller from David Macpherson and John Strickland.

I’ve seen the first three episodes before writing this review. Ultimately, The Rig is a compellingly made thriller, brought to life by a talented cast, as memorable in its bigger moments as its smaller ones. Macpherson is quick to sketch out the dynamic between the characters, what unites them and what divides them, which the cast then run with: impressively for a cast of its size (around 14 major speaking parts in the first episode alone), there’s never a danger of anyone being crowded out particularly or feeling short-changed by the series. What’s more important – and more impressive – is what The Rig does well and does distinctly on its own terms. Advertisement The camera pans across his shoulder, fixing its gaze on the window behind him and offering a brief glimpse of the swirling cloud of ash and smoke and rain that surrounds Kinloch Bravo oil rig.

[Episode 1](https://www.thereviewgeek.com/therig-s1e1review/) - It’s a shame for sure but this is definitely one to avoid. To be fair, there will be some who love The Rig . This isn’t played for laughs though, it’s a genuine line of dialogue in the show. These sort of niggling issues continue right the way through to more basic and logical moments, including characters acting smart in one scene and then needlessly foolish and dumb in another to drive the narrative forward. And yet, in episode 5 we see the cameras pointing at the exact areas the crew explored earlier on. I’m not about to spoil what happens but if you thought the writing early on is shaky, wait until episodes 5 and 6. “It is a Scots story and a Scots production and benefits because of that,” he says. “I can’t rock and roll it quite to the degree I used to,” laments Glen. “The mix of actors was very organic and lent itself well to the story. “I am conscious of not causing damage and distress to the current school because I think it is very hard for people to separate those two. “I can be literally anywhere in the world and will get stopped by people.” “For it to be shot in Edinburgh which, of course, is where I was born and bred, and be close to my mum and dad who are still here, it was just perfect. “I left university after a couple of years to go to RADA. I think it is the most beautiful city architecturally in the whole of the UK. “I think he is going to have a stunning career and he deserves it. He knew about the rigs because of his father and it was a perfect fit with his interest in geology and the history of the planet. “Thank God, I was wearing the harness.” “I managed to fall off this crane, which was quite high, having been slightly dismissive of the fact that they wanted to attach safety harnesses to me …”

The series makes us meet a man named David Coake, who was the ringleader of that oppressive and exploitative system. He was sent to Kinloch Bravo with a mission ...

There was a chopper that was coming to rescue Coake and he knew that he could leverage it to his advantage. The ancient life form had taken over the entire North Sea, and the desperation that was evidently visible on Caoke’s face made it clear that he was well aware that he could go back home only when he had exterminated the threat. Coake told Harish that everybody had a survival instinct, and there was nothing wrong with accepting the fact that they wanted to fend for their own interests before looking out for others. It was when they pumped the gas in the suspension system that they realized that Coake’s plan was never to restore but to exterminate, without even knowing the pros and cons of it. He said with a lot of certainty that it would make Baz, Fulmer, and Garrow unconscious and allow them to gain control of the production module. He said that he had already installed the system in the production module, and all they had to do was find a way to access it. Coake made all three of them believe that there was a way through which they could remove Baz, Fulmer, and Garrow from the basement without hurting them. Dunlin told Coake that they had to restrict access as Baz, Fulmer, and Garrow had taken charge of the entire production module, and people on board were scared of getting infected if they came in contact with them. The first thing that Coake asked was why the wells of the rig had been shut down, and that’s when Dunlin told him that they had to close the S valve as they had lost the remote link to the production module. He told them that if the tests that he was conducting were successful, it would extend the life of Kinloch Bravo. He was sent to Kinloch Bravo with a mission, and he was determined to accomplish it. The man was David Coake, who was leading the research and expansion wings of Pictor.
