Miller Pacheco (29) appeared before a special sitting of Cork District Court on Monday. The court heard Mr Pacheco made no reply when the charge, which was translated for him by an interpreter, was put to him under caution at 3.57pm on Monday. Evidence of arrest, charge and caution was given to the court by Detective Garda Padraig Harrington.

Miller Pacheco, 29, who is originally from Formiga in Brazil, appeared before a special sitting of Cork District Court.

She moved to Cork in September of last year (2022) and was working as a contract cleaner in the Mercy University Hospital. Meanwhile, Ms Fonseca was a native of Formiga in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The charge was translated for him by an interpreter.

THE former partner of a woman found dead on New Year's Day appeared in court last night accused of her murder.Brazilian national Miller Pacheco, 29,

Her body was removed from Room 3 Flat 5, Liberty Street at midday on New Year’s Day. The defendant was casually dressed in dark pants and black jumper. She had come to Ireland to work and learn English and was a popular member of the Brazilian community in the city. She moved to Cork last September with her boyfriend of five years and was working as a contract cleaner in the Mercy University Hospital. She was a qualified librarian and graduated from the Centro Universitario de Formiga in 2018. Free legal aid was granted in the case after Ms Buttimer told Judge John King that her client was employed but was in receipt of a low income.

Sergeant Pat Lyons applied for the defendant to be remanded in custody to appear before a sitting of Cork District Court by video link within the next week. Judge King remanded Mr Pacheco in custody to appear again before Cork District Court next Monday. Mr Pacheco is charged with murdering Ms Fonseca at No 5 Liberty Street, Cork, in the early hours of New Year’s Day contrary to Common Law. The defendant appeared in court wearing dark slacks and a black jumper. Gardaí have used the postings and CCTV footage to track Ms Fonseca as she celebrated on New Year’s Eve with friends in Cork city centre – and to follow who she was with. She left the city centre and made her way to a property in Liberty Street, Cork, where her body was discovered.

Miller Pacheco brought before a special sitting of Cork District Court on Monday.

Mr Pacheco, who was dressed in a black sweatshirt and tracksuit pants, spoke with the assistance of a Portuguese interpreter only to confirm his identity to the court during the brief hearing. Defence solicitor Aoife Buttimer said that she was consenting to the remand in custody and she asked that Mr Pacheco receive all appropriate medical attention while on remand in Cork Prison. Sgt Pat Lyons noted that Mr Pacheco could not apply for bail on a murder charge at the District Court level and he applied for a remand in custody to appear again at Cork District Court on January 9th.
