Defensively, Liverpool all over the place. Getting bullied all over the pitch. Here is what The Athletic's James Pearce made of that first half. VAR are checking for offside... What a finish it was. Oxlade-Chamberlain meets it with his head and beats Raya. It's a world-class delivery from Alexander-Arnold with his left foot. Klopp's triple changes at the interval are proving themselves so far. Liverpool are dictating the tempo now as they aim to draw level. Liverpool's intensity has dropped off since pulling one back and the Bees are looking comfortable heading into the final 10 minutes. It's the perfect start to 2023 for Thomas Frank's men and quite the opposite for Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool, meanwhile, have won their last four league games.

Red-hot Brentford aim to continue their superb recent form as they host a resurgent Liverpool in west London in a beauty of a game on Monday.

A lovely evening for a game here and it feels like when the big boys roll into town, Brentford never disappoint. Home fans are in very good spirits and there’s plenty of noise from the away end too. Virgin van Dijk gets on the end of a cross and volleys it towards goal but somehow David Raya saves and it hits the bar. A corner is whipped in and the ball comes off Konate’s left knee cap and flies into the bottom corner. The offside flag is up and VAR confirms it is no goal. However, moments later a fine cross from Jensen from the right finds Wissa and his header creeps over the line and the goal is given. What a start to the second half for the Reds. Liverpool going for it and getting the ball forward wide early and often. The Dane held things together in midfield expertly and is always so calm when he wins it back. Christian Norgaard: Brilliant ball for Mbuemo to clinch the win and he is so underrated. It is no fluke they’ve beaten Chelsea, Man City, Arsenal, Man United and now Liverpool since they were promoted to the Premier League in the summer of 2021. Brentford took the lead through an Ibrahima Konate own goal and Yoane Wissa made it 2-0, but only after he was involved in two Brentford goals being ruled out for offside.

This was how Liverpool's last away result played out, against Aston Villa. Young Spaniard Stefan Bajcetic scored in a 1-3 win against Unai Emery's side.

4 The striker was taken off on a stretcher in the last minute after sustaining an injury, replaced by Pontus Jansson. The man behind the VAR screen will be Darren England. 6 NoJordanHendersoninthesquad for Klopp either, which is why Elliott has made the starting XI. Nope, I don't see the point of it either. The free kick is swung towards Darwin but he heads over. What a fantastic save that was. Darwin went for a spectacular overhead kick, missed the ball, and it fell to Oxlade-Chamberlain. Brentford stomp it out well. All of those chances, had any of them gone over the line, would have counted. He definitely didn't try to with his feet.

We need to have confidence we can beat any team in the world. Perhaps now it's the Gunners turn to go toe-to-toe with the league's richest club, and try to overthrow their controlling influence. The second goal is a good example of that, we are brave and aggressive. It's not that we didn't fight, in the end we are responsible for the defeat. We are very difficult to break down. "Set-pieces, we know, we are good. "As Arsenal begin the exciting phase of their - what looks to be - seismic rise, to rival City, Liverpool are falling further and further behind. It shouldn't, in a way, be possible as Brentford to beat Liverpool. Of course we don't behave perfectly but, like I said, they stretch the rules in these moments, they're really pushing, really holding and everything. "Not a top-class game, but we still had chances. You have to use all your opportunities. Liverpool protested, but Stuart Attwell's wrist watch signalled the ball had fully crossed the line.

Brentford vs Liverpool: Reds hit new low point as need for more ... (Sporting News)

Liverpool's mini Premier League revival was ended emphatically as they went down to a 3-1 defeat at Brentford. The Reds had won four league games on the ...

This is not the first time this season that Liverpool have looked like a team with no chance of a top-four finish. This is not the first time that the incredible atmosphere at the Brentford Community Stadium has played a key role in a big Premier League fixture and it won't be the last. That is because the Bees have won every single Premier League game in which they have gone ahead - an incredible record for a side so new to the division. But it says a lot that it wasn't initially obvious that the Dutchman hadn't been withdrawn for tactical reasons rather than physical ones. That might not have been an issue for a quadruple-chasing juggernaut toward the back end of last season, but the current crop simply don't have it in them to launch consistent comebacks. is that it seems they can cope just fine without their talismanic striker - in the short term, at least. The German's changes at the break actually allowed his team to wrestle some momentum back but, because of his hesitance in the first half, it was too little too late. It says it all that the small improvement seen in that part of the pitch in the second half was brought about by Naby Keita - a man with no future at the club. Liverpool have no long-term options in the engine room or, in fact, anyone they can rely on to perform consistently in that area in the short term and that simply has to be corrected. This was a fourth straight game in which he missed some huge opportunities, struggled to stay onside, and left a lot to be desired with his contribution to the build-up. There were major green shoots evident during a run of seven goals in 10 games prior to the World Cup, but Nunez has been back to his worst since returning. Liverpool have already acknowledged that their squad needed retooling in the January window by bringing in Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven.
