Former Celtic, Scotland and St Mirren striker Frank McGarvey has died aged 66; McGarvey was previously diagnosed with cancer and spoke about his illness at Parkhead in October of last year; the forward was capped seven times by Scotland The former Celtic, St Mirren and Scotland striker was diagnosed with cancer in October and passed away on New Year's Day morning.

Frank was the star as the title was clinched at Dens Park on the 19th April, claiming his first senior hat-trick in a 4-0 rout of Dundee. He ended the season with 12 goals, including a double in our UEFA Cup victory over Slavia Prague. His final season at the club saw him concentrate more on the managerial role, making just four appearances during 1989-90. McGarvey again scored 17 league goals with six in cup competition to remain Saints' top scorer. 1976-77 was the season that Fergie’s Furies came of age and none more so than Frank. Frank McGarvey arrived at Love Street in December 1974 and became a regular during 1975-76.

Former Celtic, St Mirren and Scotland forward Frank McGarvey has died at the age of 66 after a battle with pancreatic cancer, his family have announced.

St Mirren also wrote: “St Mirren Football Club is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Frank McGarvey at the age of 66. Celtic paid tribute to McGarvey on their website, writing: “Everyone at Celtic is extremely saddened to hear of the death of former striker, Frank McGarvey, who passed away earlier this morning (January 1) at the age of 66. McGarvey was given a rapturous reception when he appeared on the Celtic Park pitch ahead of a match against Hibs in October.
