Despite inflation and cost of living pressures squeezing budgets, the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) forecasted retail sales would remain strong.

The Nation Retail Association predicted a $3 billion spend in Boxing Day sales alone across Australia. The predicted spend looks to be a 7.9 per cent increase on last year's post-Christmas shopping which takes in the period from December 26 to January 15. Boxing Day Test live updates: Tributes for Shane Warne on day one ... (ABC News)

Australia won the toss and put South Africa in to bat on day one of the Boxing Day Test, which will hopefully last longer than two days. Follow live.

Well played by the South African skipper. What a brilliant piece of fielding by Marnus at mid off! That's straighter down the ground from Elgar and Marnus can't chase it down. What a shot from de Bruyn, straight down the ground with a gorgeous stroke back down the pitch. He dived to his left, it would have been a stunner, but he's put it down. Someone take a photo for the next coaching manual. De Bruyn is batting to a familiar pattern. Nathan Lyon lies prostrate on the ground after a spectacular diving effort at backward point. He's tries to hook the ball away and he's just top edged the ball straight up in the air. The ball falls just safe in the vacant short point region. South Africa, having been put in, looked OK. Ultimately, what we can say for sure is that the holiday has its roots in the giving of gifts to those less fortunate. Until 2004 when the practice was banned, it was still common for hunters in the UK to gather en masse for a large-scale Fox Hunt. With that in mind, when the 26th rolled around it was seen as an opportunity for the wealthy to show appreciation to those who had worked tirelessly during the holiday season and of course, throughout the year. What we can say, is that some theories behind the use of the word “Boxing” seem to suggest that it came from Christmas gifts, while others cite charity drives and some even reference a nautical tradition. Whether it was extravagant dinners with geese, turkey and other delicacies exquisitely prepared by kitchen staff, or massive spending on gifts, the point is that the entire British class structure worked fervently, to make the holiday season as perfect as it could be for the elites of the time. Once a day on which the upper class of British society gave gifts to their staff, it has now become one of the biggest shopping holidays on the calendar.

Adding to the dampener on the traditional post-Christmas shopping spree is the fact that multiple major chains – including Aldi, Iceland, John Lewis, Pets at Home, Poundland and Beaverbrooks – will be closed on Boxing Day. The expected fall in Boxing Day trade compared with last year continues a long decline in popularity of the annual shopping tradition, as the rise of the US-inspired November discount day Many are carrying on a tradition started in the pandemic, and in some cases even earlier, of rewarding hard-working staff with a day of rest after the busy festive shopping season. Mumming: The Boxing Day hunt, but not as you know it (BBC News)

The ancient Christmas-time tradition of mumming is marked with dead birds, drama and drinking.

"A lot of our work is in schools and the faces of children when they see the masks and costumes is very special, often there is a spark of fear which quickly turns to delight," programme manager Clare Jennings said. "They all have died away, tradition has fallen a good bit and that's where the good work of the Armagh Rhymers gives it a profile." "If there was enough sandwiches made by the women, and enough drink, it would carry on to a second night. "They gather the money and then they have a dance. "It's a midwinter fertility rite, marked by the death of the hero and the revival, in the depths of midwinter there is hope, the sun will come back in the spring," explained Jim Ledwith from the Mummers Foundation in County Fermanagh. "The wrenboys are a different sort of tradition, they only go out on St Stephen's Day to perform song and music, these are one-day wonders," Jim explained.

New Zealanders break record, spend $100m on Boxing Day sales (RNZ)

While Boxing Day spending reached record heights, it was overshadowed by the amount spent in the lead-up to Christmas.

"There's huge customer demand for deals in that month or so out from Christmas. This year it was spread out over two days - so the Friday and the Saturday, given that Christmas was on the Sunday - but both those days were very large in terms of Kiwis spending." Christmas Eve though, for the last 30 years has been twice as big as the next day and we don't see that trend changing at all." "It's hard to say as well because a lot of retailers have been stretching out Black Friday, some retailers are doing the whole month of November and things like that, so just Black Friday as a day sale is not quite a thing anymore." "There has been some suggestion that there's a bit of buyers' fatigue, that the sales seem to continue for so long that when it comes to Boxing Day, people have already got the deals that they were chasing." "It certainly announces the start of the sale period, and what we tend to see now is that the sales start at Black Friday and don't seem to stop until Christmas.

India has played Boxing Day Test matches in Australia in 1985, 1991, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011, 2014, 2018 and 2020. Football and cricket matches are scheduled to take place, in hopes that this would improve the events’ viewership as it is a public holiday. According to Australia Broadcasting Corporation, the history can be traced back to how in 1892, the stadium hosted a Sheffield Shield match which started a tradition of Christmas period clashes between Victoria and New South Wales. Countries such as the UK and Australia see public holidays on the day as well. Others believe it comes from the post-Christmas custom of churches placing boxes outside their doors to collect money for distribution to less-fortunate members of society in need of Christmas cheer. It was particularly important as many countries in the Global North see biting temperatures prevail.
