Director, Joseph Kosinski, discusses the making of Top Gun: Maverick, getting Tom Cruise involved, performing dangerous stunts, & more.
And yeah, I think what you see on the screen is every single person on the crew giving their absolute all to deliver the absolute best film we could. The performance that you get out of an actor when they're in a real situation, you just can't duplicate that on a stage. And we ended up getting to shoot at the top secret hangar, and we really built Darkstar, and we put it in a hangar. On this one, yes, the people that are in power at the Navy, the admirals and people of that level, a lot of them joined the Navy because of Top Gun. The one thing they added, which I didn't put in the film, was they said, "And you do it at night," which would've been all with night vision goggles, which I like not to do. So, yes, once we described the movie we wanted to make and how we were going to make it, how we wanted to make it, they were very, very helpful and instrumental and invaluable. And we had a sequence where he pulled up on his bike and looked up, and it was his old F-14 that he flew with Goose up on a pole in front of the base. And ultimately, it's down to the performance of both of them, and what Val's able to do in that scene without speaking is pretty phenomenal. But the benefit of that is that when Iceman does speak, it carries more power and more weight to what he's saying. KOSINSKI: We did a lot of versions of that scene in the script process. And yeah, from that was the first moment where I was like, "Wow, it seems to be playing well." KOSINSKI: The one that I was dreaming about that I wasn't sure we'd be able to get is the one of Maverick launching off the aircraft carrier.
Famously, real-life actors Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer butted heads on set while shooting the 1986 cult classic, only for the duo to go on to become such close ...
Iceman’s lone Top Gun: Maverick scene is followed by the character’s funeral, and, despite how sad the moment is, the crowning achievement of the Top Gun sequel is how well-earned this tragic scene feels. It is a testament to the talent of the two screen veterans that the moment revolves around. In a movie with life-or-death dogfights, aerial chases, and intense action sequences, it is a short, quiet conversation between two friends who haven’t caught up in years that make Top Gun: Maverick truly shine. [Top Gun: Maverick’s silly beach football scenes](https://screenrant.com/top-gun-2-perfectly-justifies-original-goofy-beach-volleyball-scene/) prove that Maverick is a savvier teacher than he seems as they bond his tense pupils together, but his mentorship skills would be worth nothing if the character couldn’t concede control to others in a crisis. It’s a small moment and a funny joke but, in the context of Top Gun: Maverick’s story, it is one of the earliest examples of Maverick’s growth. The entire scene is a testament to the chemistry shared by Cruise and his co-star and captures the gravity and warmth of their decades-long relationship, as Kilmer largely speaks through a device.
While it might seem surprising that the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor doesn't appear in Top Gun: Maverick, there's a solid justification for this.
As a result, on Top Gun: Maverick's practical and thematic levels, the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor was a bad fit for the Top Gun sequel. As such, it would have made no sense for Maverick to pilot an F-22 of the aircraft in Top Gun: Maverick. It is a single-seat aircraft, meaning the creators of Top Gun: Maverick wouldn't have been able to film inside a real-life Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor. Since the F-22 doesn't allow the filmmaker enough room to obtain usable footage, the phenomenally costly aircraft would have been a wasted investment for Top Gun: Maverick's production. [Top Gun: Maverick](https://screenrant.com/tag/top-gun-2/), the [Top Gun](https://screenrant.com/tag/top-gun/) sequel opted not to use this model for two reasons. [Top Gun: Maverick is (thankfully) not realistic](https://screenrant.com/top-gun-2-ignores-real-wars-good-why-explained/), the sequel needed to make a few concessions to common sense regarding its production process.
'Tis the season for Top Gun! Top Gun: Maverick hit Paramount+ yesterday so now more people can enjoy 2022's biggest movie from the comfort of their own ...
"It seems to me at the end of this film that Maverick has some gas left in the tank. While there are no current plans, Kosinski recently spoke at [Deadline](https://deadline.com/2022/12/top-gun-maverick-joseph-kosinski-jerry-bruckheimer-interview-contenders-la3c-1235195521/)'s Contenders LA3C panel and [addressed the possibility of another film.](https://comicbook.com/movies/news/top-gun-3-producer-teases-maverick-sequel-could-happen/) And they're like, 'Okay, if you tell us when you want to shoot there, we'll take what's in there, and we'll move it out a few days before so you'll have a building.' And I'm like, 'We have this sequence where we've got this secret airplane that they pull out at night, and it just looks like that's the perfect spot for it.' And they said, 'Well it's no surprise that you're interested in that particular building.' So, I'm like, 'Oh man, wow.
Tom Cruise doesn't make a lot of sequels, with Mission: Impossible's Ethan Hunt the one role of his career he'd played at least twice, with Jack Reacher ...
Kosinski was given 30 minutes between setups on Mission: Impossible – Fallout to twist Cruise’s arm, and it’s clear he made a hell of an impression on the veteran action icon. “The first thing I pitched to him was the Rooster story. Not that there hadn’t been overtures made in the decades since Tony Scott’s 1986 original first rocketed the young star to the top of the Hollywood A-list, a position he’s held onto ever since.

Even though Top Gun: Maverick ended the character arc of Tom Cruise's Maverick perfectly, the Top Gun hero still needs to return to Top Gun 3.
As such, Top Gun 3 could show how Top Gun's hero adjusts to an idyllic but less dramatic life he has built by the end of Top Gun: Maverick. [Top Gun](https://screenrant.com/tag/top-gun/) sequel [Top Gun: Maverick](https://screenrant.com/tag/top-gun-2/) managed to wrap up the story of Maverick perfectly, Top Gun 3 still needs to happen. Top Gun 3 could allow Cruise to see Maverick transition into a happy retirement wherein the eternal searcher finally settles down and enjoys life. However, paradoxically, Top Gun 3 needs to happen, and the film should still feature Cruise. However, by the end of Top Gun: Maverick, Maverick has saved Goose's son Rooster, earned Rooster's respect, and learned to forgive himself. Moreover, Top Gun: Maverick gives a perfect ending to its hero, meaning there is an argument to be made for the franchise ending with this sequel.
