Nepo Babies Are The Tip Of The Class Inequality Iceberg (BuzzFeed News)

Sure, talking about famous people's famous parents is fun. But there are so many other more nefarious forms of nepotism out there.

But nepo babies are the sparkly tip of the class critique iceberg. It’s not closed consciously, but it doesn’t seem to have to open.” The benefactors of this closed system aren’t quite nepo babies — they aren’t famous, nor are their parents — but they do reap the rewards of a parallel kind of privilege. [Olivia Jade](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/paigeskinner/lori-loughlin-olivia-jade-vlogs), daughter of Full House’s Lori Loughlin and face of the [2019 Varsity Blues scandal,](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/alessadominguez/operation-varsity-blues-netflix-college-admissions-documenta) in which rich and famous families were revealed to be buying their kids’ admission to elite universities. The spectrum of their privilege, painstakingly mapped by New York magazine, is very small. The flip side of this coin is the [school-to-prison pipeline](https://www.aclu.org/issues/juvenile-justice/juvenile-justice-school-prison-pipeline), in which under-resourced public schools discipline students via an escalating chain of zero-tolerance practices that start with suspensions and expulsions and frequently lead to juvenile detention, which sets kids up with early criminal records that hinder their job and housing prospects as they become adults. On the path of least resistance, they get taken care of first. But we should spend time meaningfully linking nepotism in the arts to class insularity in the rest of the world. [the hypocrisy](https://twitter.com/irosarioc/status/1604894454191517696) of gleefully charting celebrity nepotism, [tweeting](https://twitter.com/gregotto/status/1604943203148382210): “This [article] is great. Now someone do one for journalists.” Direct parent-to-child nepotism afflicts plenty of industries, [including this one](https://money.cnn.com/2017/08/31/media/clyde-maggie-haberman-reliable-sources-podcast/index.html) (as New York magazine [mentioned briefly](https://www.vulture.com/article/nepotism-babies-magazine-interns.html)). [On Twitter](https://twitter.com/lilyallen/status/1604903982589218832), English musician and “industry baby” Lily Allen made a similar point, writing, “The nepo babies y’all should be worrying about are the ones working for legal firms, the ones working for banks, and the ones working in politics. If the debate around “nepo babies” revolves solely and dismally around the babies themselves, and doesn’t expand into the ramifications for the rest of us, we let the latent class critique get subsumed in capitalism. The nepo baby discourse harnesses celebrity buzz to broach issues of inequality, but then the celebrity fixation takes over.

Hollywood Nepo Babies Aren't the Real Problem, Lily Allen Says (Rolling Stone)

Hollywood nepotism babies are the least of our concerns, in comparison to those in politics and banking, singer Lily Allen recently stated on Twitter.

“I do feel that nepo babies are being somewhat scapegoated here though, there is a wider, societal conversation to be had about wealth inequality, about lack of programs and funding, and I guess that was the point I was trying to make, maybe badly.” I just really think that we can’t get to a real solution without identifying the real problem, as fun as it is to laugh at the kids of famous people. For Allen, it’s still a conversation she’s learning to have after defaulting to the defensive earlier in her career, reluctant to share credit for her success with family members she had less than strong relationships with. “In childhood we crave stability and love, nurturing, we don’t care about money or proximity to power yet,” she said.

The success of high-profile actors' offspring is not a new, or particularly popular, fairytale. But how can nepo babies best own their identity?

Why Zoë Kravitz, Maya Hawke and other Hollywood nepo babies have gotten an (undeserved) bad rap.

Miley Cyrus, daughter of Billy Ray, owes her career as much to an inspired rejection of her Disney-approved showbiz cred as to the fact that her godmother is Dolly Parton. You can be both the child of a famous parent and one of the most exciting stars of your generation. Margaret Qualley (mother: Andie McDowell) has been nominated for two Emmys, most recently for her searing performance in “Maid.” The Skarsgard brothers (Alexander, Bill, Gustaf) are proof that charisma may be as genetic as a chiseled jaw. The discourse around “nepo babies” heated up this week with the release of a Vulture package that featured an instantly viral photo illustration of famous progeny — including Lily-Rose Depp (daughter of Johnny) and Dakota Johnson (whose parents are Melanie Griffiths and Don Johnson) — swaddled in cradles. The nepo privilege is real, and it’s important to acknowledge the systems that benefit certain people over others. At the top are the classic nepo babies, inheritors of famous names and famous features: Dakota Johnson, Maya Hawke, Jack Quaid. Paula, an erstwhile icon of Southern cooking, began her tenure with the Food Network in 2002 with the premiere of Paula’s Home Cooking, a series on which Bobby and Jamie often guested. None of this is anything new—Hollywood has always been replete with A-listers’ progeny entering doors wedged open for them—but TikTok has recently latched onto the phenomenon with such fervor that celebrities are now asked point-blank in interviews how they feel about being deemed so-called nepo babies, and few have provided graceful answers.
