With the increasing complexity of forecasting, most private and public weather providers have a staff of expert meteorologists who work directly with stakeholders to define their specific weather-data needs. Most private weather companies use a combination of public, private, and proprietary weather data and models to create industry-specific forecasts. While there will potential moderation as we head into January, in the meantime another highly impactful storm targeting the Great Lakes and sections of the Northeast US right before the Christmas holiday, with some of the coldest air of the winter season to follow. Major winter storm systems can impact millions of people in a wide variety of ways, and it is a dangerous reminder that having access to reliable, relevant forecasts year-round is critical. While similar to last week’s storm track, the major issue this time will be very heavy snow and strong winds, followed by the coldest air so far this winter over the eastern half of the country. On the heels of last week’s major storm, which swept from California to Connecticut leaving a path of tornadoes, strong winds and heavy snow, another major storm is taking aim on portions of the Great Lakes and Northeast US.
