At the weekend Dee Forbes, the Director General of RTÉ, defended the musical following negative reviews and cancellations, saying “the audience reaction so far has been fantastic”. “The team tried its very best to make the shows happen, but ran out of time and options and had to cancel. RTÉ has said the show, which runs until December 31st in Dublin’s Convention Centre, was forced to cancel due to illness in the cast. [Toy Show the Musical: We went to the opening night. There was also a cost of living crisis so people might not have the same disposable income. The Sinn Féin TD told RTÉ Radio’s Morning Ireland that the PAC will be asking Director General Dee Forbes what market research was done in advance of the production.

Chair of the PAC Brian Stanley said RTÉ's director general Dee Forbes will be questioned on the matter.

“On the face of it, it appears that proper market research was not done. Mr Stanley told RTÉ Radio’s Morning Ireland the PAC will be asking RTÉ's director general Dee Forbes what market research was done in advance of the production. The commercial risks involved in putting on Toy Show The Musical “appear to be too high”, according to the chair of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley.

At the weekend Dee Forbes, director general of RTÉ, defended the musical after negative reviews and cancellations, saying “the audience response so far has been fantastic”. “The team tried their best to execute the shows, but ran out of time and resources and had to cancel. “Although there is a certain degree of flexibility in the cast, where roles can be covered by less experienced people, mainly due to the continued illness of the children in the cast, further adjustments have to be made to this week’s schedule. The stakes in this scenario appear very high.” He said this was happening at a time when RTÉ’s finances were not sound. There was also a cost of living crisis so people may not have the same disposable income.
