World Cup 2022 final: Win or lose, Argentina star Lionel Messi has ... (Eurosport.com)

Ahead of the 2022 World Cup final Pete Sharland looks at the GOAT debate, and why whether Argentina win or lose, Lionel Messi has more than settled the ...

But they will have to start at a stupidly young age, and keep going for a hell of a long time. And for the record, in that 2005-06 season Ronaldo played in 33 Premier League games (24 starts compared to 11 for Messi). This is not to say that no player will ever pass Messi as the greatest of all time. Well for the former you can certainly make an argument that his peak was as good as Messi’s peak, or even better. Messi’s record against English teams probably speaks for itself there and if you watched La Liga and the Premier League side by side you would probably conclude that the former is better defensively, not the latter. The real truth of the GOAT debate is that it is an entirely personal decison. But more so than anything it is the consistency. Conversely the argument for Messi is that there has never been a player with as much natural talent in his boots. It’s not just the amount of goals but the assists as well, the creativity that Ronaldo and Pele did not possess. Some comes down to age and the era you fell in love with football, and some can come down to the club and/or country you support. For Ronaldo the argument is two-fold. For Pele the argument is three World Cups, including being part of the second team to win back-to-back titles.

I love watching them because of how passionate they are, but they will fight and scrap to win at any cost. Julian Alvarez has been superb and will be a threat with his runs behind the defence but, overall, France still have more firepower. Morocco had 23% of possession in their win over Spain, but managed 61% against the French. It looks and feels as though the World Cup is going back to Argentina. But on the biggest occasions, sometimes you have to control the emotion and expectation can be an enemy. We all want to see Messi get what he deserves. I think it’s going to a shootout and the trophy is going back to Paris. Messi, on the other hand, is in the golden age and has produced the great moments of this World Cup. But I don’t think this is the foregone conclusion that everyone seems to think, with even the bookies making Argentina slight favourites because of the Messi factor. But football at the highest level — and this is the very highest level — has a way of educating us that predictability never minds testing the offside trap. The final is one of the best in Europe against the best in South America — the world champions against the King in The heart of the world seems to be with Argentina. The whole world seems to want to see perhaps the greatest of all time do a Pele and lift the World Cup, and emulate another contender for that title, the legendary Diego Maradona.

Argentina v France: World Cup 2022 final – live (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: Can France win a second consecutive World Cup or will Lionel Messi inspire Argentina to a third title? Join Scott Murray.

and it’s the first-ever World Cup final at the Centenario in Montevideo! 2014: Germany 1-0 Argentina (aet; 0-0 after 90 mins) Argentina had laboured to a semi-final victory on penalties against the Netherlands, while Germany had done a number – specifically the number seven – on hosts Brazil. The team became poster boys for the new multi-cultural France, and this may just be the first precis of the 1998 final that doesn’t take a deep dive into the subject of Ronaldo’s pre-match fitness. He did for fierce rivals Brazil with one of the great assists, setting up Claudio Caniggia while being mugged and playing with a dodgy foot. One of these great footballing nations will tonight win the biggest prize of all for the third time in their illustrious history. Argentina went on to lose in the final. Four players in this match are in with a shout of ending the tournament as the leading scorer. Monti went on to score the game’s only goal from a direct free kick nine minutes from time. Should France prevail, they’ll be the first side to retain the trophy since Brazil, 60 years ago in Chile. Should Argentina win, they’ll become the first country from outside Europe to lift the trophy since Brazil, 20 years ago in Japan. The 41-year-old has already officiated matches involving Argentina and France during this World Cup. And yes, it’s all right, you can never go wrong with the tricolore, though there’s a sense of the FA’s it’ll-do abomination about the whole thing.
