Dáil votes to elect Leo Varadkar as Taoiseach after Micheál Martin ... (Irish Examiner)

Mr Varadkar's nomination was agreed on by the Dáil with 87 TDs voting in favour. 62 TDs voted no.

Looking forward to the second phase of this Government. "Finally, Ceann Comhairle, I would like to say thank you to members of the Dáil. “I want to take this opportunity to commend Micheál Martin on the leadership he has shown as Taoiseach, for putting the country before politics, and for providing reassurance and hope during difficult times. "I believe that we must not let this become the dominant way in which our public discourse is conducted. "We have been blessed by the wonderful community of Cork, which has looked out for us and given me the strongest possible reassurance that all would be well as I spent so much time away. In a vote taken on a historic Saturday sitting, Mr Varadkar was comfortably elected to the highest political office in land for a second time, having previously served between 2017 and 2020. In 2020 the new Taoiseach was unable to have his wife and family with him in the Convention Centre as he received the greatest honour of his life. “We are also making progress on some key issues. Providing hope and housing, economic opportunity and a fair start for all. We’re making progress on climate change and we’re creating greater opportunities in terms of childcare and education and bringing in much needed reform to our health service. He is due to make a speech around 5pm this evening. His family members stood in the Francini corridor, looking into the State Reception room where Mr Varadkar received the seal of the Taoiseach and the seal of the government.

A former minister for health, Mr Martin's time as taoiseach has been dominated by Covid, the war in Ukraine and the stand-off between the European Union and the UK over the Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil, for decades the largest parties in the Republic of Ireland, trace their origins to the opposing sides in the Irish Civil War of the early 1920s. Domestically, Mr Varadkar and his fellow ministers in the three-party coalition will have to convince a sceptical electorate that they are delivering on housing, heath and the cost of living. "I want to work with all parties in this House and in Northern Ireland, as well as with the British government and our partners in the European Union, to make progress on the protocol and restore the institutions of the Agreement." Looking forward to the second phase of this Government. "We want to reduce costs - childcare, education at all levels. In 2010, the State had been forced to apply for a loan from the Troika and the party had plunged to third place in the polls. It is the first time in the history of the State that the position of Taoiseach has ‘rotated’ between two individuals of different parties without a change of Government. In a video posted on social media, Mr Martin said the job had been "the honour of a lifetime" and that he was looking forward to the second phase of the coalition. The second half of Mr Martin’s time in office was dominated by the war in Ukraine and the economic fallout from the sanctions imposed on Russia.

That, and Mr Martin’s change of stance on abortion in 2018 – choosing to back liberalising Ireland’s abortion laws in a move that shocked parts of Fianna Fail – showed he is not afraid to defy his party. Several murmurs of heaves against Mr Martin over the years have fizzled out, partly due to a confluence of crises and the lack of an obvious candidate to succeed the veteran Fianna Fail-er. Mr Martin’s choice to appoint Stephen Donnelly, a recent Fianna Fail member, was also seen as controversial as it appeared to overlook party stalwarts. Despite a number of awkward moments with Fine Gael leader Mr Varadkar, who pipped Mr Martin at the post in announcing government decisions several times, the Fianna Fail leader was seen to have kept his cool while backbenchers’ tempers flared. But Mr Martin’s coalition Government had a fractious beginning for his party – losing two Fianna Fail agriculture ministers in its first two months. He also backed fast-tracking Ukraine’s application to join the European Union, a rare move for a non-eastern European country, and made a statement providing for 70,000 Ukrainian refugees.
