Then the trailer immediately snaps to showing us the bright pinks and blues we might have expected from the project as Robbie’s Barbie surveys the neighborhood from the top of her Barbie Dreamhouse. The Little Women writer-director has re-teamed with Noah Baumbach to write a new take on the much-loved doll character.

The film is set to be followed by another Mattel adaptation, a take on Polly Pocket written and directed by Lena Dunham and starring Lily Collins. Barbie had originally been in the works in 2015 with Oscar-winning Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody before it moved to Amy Schumer in 2016 who was set to star and co-write. She added that she hoped the film will “provoke a thoughtful conversation”.

The project has been in the works for nearly a decade and at one point was helmed by “Juno” and “Jennifer’s Body” writer Diablo Cody, who bowed out because, she told The movie began production in London earlier this year and wrapped in July. That is, until the arrival of Margot as the swimsuit-clad monumental fashion doll in all her plastic glory.
