The Arles Kilcruise clubman announced his retirement from inter-county after 20 years, today.
Ross Munnelly can rightly be considered one of Laois' greatest players, his 2003 Leinster Championship-winning colleague Fergal Byron has said.
His last game for his county came in the Tailteann Cup defeat to eventual winners Westmeath. Byron said his record of service has to be a factor in where he stands in the context of Laois players. “He wasn’t part of the golden era of Laois minors (teams that won back-to-back All-Ireland titles in 1996 and 1997). He was 20 when he came in first, but he would stay on after training every night taking shots on me. “He has given more to Laois in those 20 years than just his playing ability,” said the former goalkeeper and 2003 All-Star. His career began in 2003, the year Mick O’Dwyer took charge and guided them to a first Leinster title since 1946.

And it was never a case of managers playing him because he was Ross. He played a record 222 games for the Laois footballers, league and championship. Only, he was not like the rest of us in the press box two weeks ago. He lit up Croke Park in his maiden season of 2003, scoring 1-1 as Laois won their first Delaney Cup since 1946. “I remember calling Ross shortly after I became Laois manager,” remembers Quirke, who was appointed in late 2019. So Munnelly jots down the scores, just like the rest of us.

He was also nominated for an All-Star in 2003, 2005 and 2006. I will be forever grateful to my club Arles Kilcruise and all the people I shared the last 20 seasons with.
