Jonathan Dowdall has told the Special Criminal Court that Gerard Hutch had told him about two days after the shooting of David Byrne at the Regency Hotel ...
Asked by Mr Gillane if Mr Hutch had said who it was that shot Mr Byrne, Dowdall replied: “He said it was him and ‘Mago’ Gately.” He learned his father had been asked by Patsy Hutch to book a room at the Regency Hotel that evening but had forgotten. Mr Hutch’s trial, which continues on Tuesday, is running alongside the trials of two other men – Paul Murphy (59), of Cherry Avenue, Swords, Co Dublin, and Jason Bonney (50), of Drumnigh Wood, Portmarnock, Dublin. Mr Hutch was “in a panic” and had said he wasn’t happy about the shooting of Mr Byrne, he said. Armed gardaí were outside and inside the Criminal Courts of Justice building where the trial of Mr Hutch and two co-accused has been continuing since mid-October. Dowdall had also been charged with the murder of Mr Byrne, which he denied.
The Regency Hotel murder trial also heard that Gerry Hutch said he "wasn't happy" about Mr Byrne being killed.
I think he knew the shit was hitting the fan and he was upset I believed over the killing," said the witness. Earlier in his testimony Dowdall told the court that in 2015 he was told that Patrick Hutch Jnr was being accused of trying to kill Daniel Kinahan in Spain. The witness said Gerard Hutch had approached his vehicle on the passenger side and that he was on his own. The victim was shot by two of the tactical assailants and further rounds were delivered to his head and body. I don't know who he was referring to but said it was him and them at the hotel. He added: "Patrick went with a family member and was shot and was brought to the Mater hospital. The State's witness told the court that Gerard Hutch was on his own in the park that morning and had asked him if he had spoken to his brother Patsy. We went to Richmond Road, half way down to the garage and Gerard came and my father gave him the cards," said Dowdall. Dowdall said he drove his father home to the Navan Road after the phone call from Patsy and his 'Da' got his passport as he needed identification for booking the room. Giving evidence on Monday from the jury box, Dowdall told Mr Gillane that he and his father Patrick were travelling back to Dublin from Strabane in Co. Dowdall told Mr Gillane that his father had not told him anything about "a call" from Patsy the previous night on February 3. Dowdall also told prosecution counsel Sean Gillane SC that Mr Hutch said he "wasn't happy" about Mr Byrne being killed.
Jonathan Dowdall claimed Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch told him that he and an alleged Dublin criminal shot David Byrne dead at the North Dublin hotel in 2016.
He said they would be “in and out of the house.”— Paul Healy (@Healyhack) He said Hutch was on his own and asked him did he see the Sunday World. He said Hutch was "paranoid that people were watching him in the park". Dowdall says Hutch told him “a lot of innocent people” were going to get killed. He said that “it was getting out of hand. Dowdall asked about the murder of Gary Hutch. Dowdall said he couldn’t see himself getting involved. He was upset over killing the lad David.” Dowdall says Hutch was “concerned” about a driver who drove him after the Regency shooting. Think he knew that sh*t was hitting the fan. “He was on his own. As a result the case has been put back to tomorrow morning.— Paul Healy (@Healyhack)
FORMER Sinn Fein councillor Jonathan Dowdall has claimed Gerard “The Monk” Hutch told him he shot David Byrne in the gangland attack at the Regency Hotel.
He said Dowdall was present and in the precincts of the court. He said Mr Hutch again spoke about “Patrick in the photograph” and innocent people who would be killed. The defence said this should have been done before he was called to give evidence. They had no ID so his father got his passport and he drove his father to the Regency. “He told me it was them in the hotel,” he said. “Gerard came,” he said. Before Dowdall arrived, Sean Gillane handed in a letter that he had received from Dowdall's solicitor. This afternoon, he said his father Patrick Dowdall had been living with him at his Navan Road home when Patsy Hutch called to the house on February 3, 2016. “He told me it was him and them at the hotel. Patsy Hutch had asked his father to book a room in the Regency Hotel for a friend of his, which was nothing unusual, he said. He said it was them at the hotel and he said he wasn't happy about shooting the young lad, David Byrne, and David Byrne being killed.” HIs murder charge was withdrawn by the prosecution.
Former Sinn Fein councillor Jonathan Dowdall has told the Regency Hotel murder trial he has known Gerard Hutch since he was a teenager.
He said Dowdall was present and in the precincts of the court. The defence said this should have been done before he was called to give evidence. This audio evidence had also been challenged by the defence. However, Ms Justice Tara Burns said this was not a matter for the court. Before Dowdall arrived, prosecutor Sean Gillane handed in a letter that he had received from Dowdall's solicitor. HIs murder charge was withdrawn by the prosecution.

Dowdall also said that Patsy Hutch's van was registered in his company's name and that he was asked to lie about it. "He said it was them at the hotel," Dowdall said. "There was never any issue," he said. Dowdall said Mr Hutch asked him to contact people in the North. He said him and Mago Gately shot David Byrne." "When I arrived Gerard was there, on his own," he said. However Dowdall said he was told to go to Richmond Road in Drumcondra where they pulled in at a garage. "He was in a panic," Dowdall said of Mr Hutch, "he wasn't like any other time I had seen him. "I told them the background of the feud, it wasn't full on at that stage," he said. The Sunday World had taken a picture of two of the gunmen running from the hotel, one of them was in drag, the other was Kevin Murray. He just said thanks and headed off." He also said he was supposed to meet a man called Kevin Tyrone but he did not turn up or at the next meeting on 4 February.
Jonathan Dowdall has taken the witness stand at the trial of Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch over the murder of David Byrne.
He said that “it was getting out of hand. “Patrick had to hand himself up for a punishment shooting,” he said. It was dissident people. He was upset over killing the lad David.” “It wasn’t provisional. He said Hutch had said people had called to his nephew's house and that other contacts had been made. Think he knew that sh*t was hitting the fan. Dowdall said: “[Gerry Hutch] told me he was upset." “He was on his own. He said Hutch was “paranoid that people were watching him in the park.” He said it was “Patrick” in the photo and said that there was “going to be a lot of innocent people killed.” “When I arrived Gerard was there,” he said. Dowdall said he told Hutch he had seen the paper and “I told him who I thought a person looked like,” - claiming the “person in drag” was “Patrick.”

"He said it was him and Mago Gately who were at the hotel and had shot David Byrne. He was present in court to hear a garda (Irish police) superintendent from the state's witness protection programme give evidence that his admission to the programme was not performance-related to the evidence he gives against Gerard Hutch and was "completely independent". Mr Dowdall also said that Mr Hutch was "very agitated" when he met him in the days after the murder. He also said he was asked by Patsy Hutch to book a room at the Regency Airport Hotel. Giving evidence at the Special Criminal Court, Dowdall said he met Mr Hutch in a park in the days after the shooting. He said Gerard Hutch told him that he had shot dead Mr Byrne alongside another man referred to in court as Mago Gateley.
Dowdall said Hutch told him that he and another man shot David Byrne dead at the Regency hotel.
Dowdall said he was told to lie and say the van was in his possession all the time. He also handed the letter up to the court which he said contained some “difficulties”. ‘Wee’ told Dowdall that he had heard the Hutchs were involved in the Regency and they wanted to know how Kevin Murray, also known as ‘Flat Cap’, was involved with the Hutch organisation. He said that it was them at the hotel and he’s not happy about shooting the young lad David Byrne and David Byrne being killed. I don’t know who he was referring to but he had said it was him and them at the hotel. Asked about what happened after the shooting at the Regency Hotel, Dowdall said he was contacted to meet Gerard Hutch in a small park beside a church in Whitehall on the morning of 8 February. Dowdall said that he and his father Patrick were travelling back to Dublin that evening when Patsy Hutch rang his “Da” on the way home and asked was the hotel room at the Regency booked for the Hutch’s as had been requested the previous night. Dowdall said he remained in his jeep in the car park of the hotel until his father came back and the arrangement was that they would drop the key cards for the room into Patsy’s house on Champions Avenue. He said he did not see what car he was driving and that he would normally ride a bike. Dowdall later said that the group he spoke to was the “New IRA”. Dowdall told the court that in 2015 he was told that Patrick Hutch Junior was accused of trying to kill Daniel Kinahan in Spain. I was asked to step in the middle to stop the feud,” he said.

The moment in the Gerard Hutch trial many had been waiting for began about 11.30am when Jonathan Dowdall, preceded by six gardaí and prison officers, ...
Mr Dowdall earlier said it was not unusual for the Hutches to ask his family to book hotels or flights for them and he learned on February 4th that his father, Patrick, had been asked by Patsy Hutch to book a room at the Regency Hotel for that night. Asked by Mr Gillane if Mr Hutch had said who it was that had shot Mr Byrne, Mr Dowdall said: “He said it was him and Mago Gately.” Mr Dowdall said Gerard Hutch had asked to meet him in a park near Whitehall in Dublin about two days after the killing and was “in a panic”. About 12.40pm, after Mr Dowdall indicated he wanted a break, the court rose early for lunch. Exchanges between the judges and counsel indicated it appeared Mr Dowdall was unhappy with the impact on his health of his prison conditions. Wearing a navy suit and white shirt, the former Sinn Féin councillor’s hands shook when drinking a glass of water during his direct evidence.

He claimed this happened just a few days after the shooting. Just before they broke up for the day, the prosecution was about to ask Jonathan Dowdall about a recorded conversation between him and Gerry Hutch as they drove to and from Northern Ireland on the 7th of March 2016 –one month after David Byrne was shot dead when armed men stormed an event at the Regency hotel. Yesterday, the former Sinn Féin councillor told the judges that Mr Hutch told him he was one of the men who shot David Byrne at the Dublin hotel in 2016.

Key witness Jonathan Dowdall has told the Special Criminal Court that Gerard Hutch was “lying” when he said that six people involved in the Regency Hotel ...
Certain comments he had made concerning those were, he said, “in bad taste”. Asked about the exchanges on the March 7th, 2016, recording, Dowdall said the words on the transcript attributed to him were correct. The group he spoke to was the “New IRA”, he said. Defence counsel Brendan Grehan SC said Mr Hutch had moved up two seats but “there was nothing to be read into that” as it was for the purpose of better seeing the video screen on which extracts from a transcript of an audio recording of exchanges between him and Mr Hutch when they were driving north on March 7th 2016 would be played. During his evidence on Monday, Dowdall said he had met Mr Hutch in a Dublin park a few days after the shooting of Mr Byrne at the Regency Hotel. Wearing a navy jacket, white shirt and mustard trousers, he was as usual carrying a case full of papers.
Jonathan Dowdall also told the court that Gerard Hutch lied to him during a conversation that was secretly recorded.
Gerard Hutch could also be heard saying in the audio: "There's a present them three yokes" and that he wanted "to throw them up there to them as a present". The witness continued: "I was told the van that was used was parked at Buckingham Village and he [Patsy] got rid of the CCTV because of that reason. In the recorded conversation, Dowdall is heard saying that the newspapers don't have a "fuckin clue about the Regency". He said Mr Hutch had told him earlier that day that he had given the guns to the Republicans they had met with in Northern Ireland that day. Mr Gillane asked the witness to explain parts of what was said in the recorded conversations. Dowdall said he believed "innocent people were trying to be killed" and wouldn't have gotten involved if he had known the truth.

That would look like I was asked to contact these, they would let their guard down and then this happens." I wasn’t going to put my family in danger, things had happened in Wheatfield that was constantly leaked," he added. "After 2018 it was impossible for it to happen until I was released. I couldn’t explain the circumstances of the room," he said referring to the room his father booked at the Regency Hotel the night before the murder which was used by one of the gunmen. Patrick and Gary, that’s how it started, " Dowdall said. "I wasn’t involved in crime. "I tried to speak to the guards at the time, I was advised to remain silent," he said, "there were reasons why I couldn’t answer certain questions in that garda station. My father is willing to go in to court. "My father was present. I wouldn’t be allowed put up a defence. He said he was willing to talk to the guards, I told the guards that. There was no conversation, that’s what happened."
Gerard Hutch is on trial for murdering David Byrne at Dublin's Regency Airport Hotel.
In a tape played to the court, Dowdall questions Mr Hutch over a meeting he had with dissident republicans about handing over the "yokes" to them. The court was previously told that the murder of Mr Byrne during a boxing weigh-in at the hotel was carried out as part of a feud between the Hutch and Kinahan crime gangs. Some of the clips were played to the court and Dowdall was asked to explain the contents of the conversation. Earlier, Dowdall said he is ashamed of some of the things he said to Mr Hutch in secret garda (police) recordings of conversations between the two men. Mr Grehan said Dowdall had previously told the Special Criminal Court in Dublin that he did not know who had filmed him waterboarding a man in a dispute over the sale of a motorcycle. He told the court there were two big lies that Dowdall had told - firstly, that he had given the keys to the Regency Airport Hotel room he had booked to Mr Hutch; and, secondly, that Mr Hutch had confessed to him that he was the killer.

Mr Hutch says: “Maybe if they say they’ll go and do away with the half dozen hitmen in Dublin. “They would never have agreed to anything like that.” The court heard another clip where Mr Hutch was heard saying “The f***ing six people don’t know who the six people are, no one f***ing knows, so how can they [gardaí] know. I'm not sure if it was the key or wasn't." “He’s lying to me, saying they don’t know each other,” he said of Gerard Hutch. "Some woman" was supposed to have got rid of the CCTV and Patsy told him at the time "he got rid of the CCTV because he drove the van," Dowdall said. The first is that when he drove his father to hand over the Regency room keys the day before the attack, it was to Gerard Hutch. Dowdall said this was Buckingham Village in the north inner city. “I didn’t know who was there. His murder charge was withdrawn by the prosecution. "I was told that the van that was used was parked in Buckingham Village and he had got rid of the CCTV for that reason," Dowdall told the court. He said he spoke to Gerard Hutch's brother Patsy Hutch about his own van being there and CCTV.
