Galway County saw the lowest temperatures in Ireland over the weekend, as cold weather brought ongoing freezing conditions.

Galway is also under a Status Orange warning for freezing fog until midnight, which will create hazardous driving conditions. A Status Yellow warning for low temperatures and ice will remain in effect throughout the country until Friday afternoon. In a milestone for Galway City, the main span of the new Salmon Weir Pedestrian and Cycling Bridge has been installed.

It is expected that the new bridge will open to traffic in the summer of 2023. The bridge from Newtownsmith to Galway Cathedral/Gaol Road will reduce the level of pedestrians and bicycles on the old Salmon Weir Bridge, which was never designed for the amount of traffic using it daily. The bridge will also enhance links between the core city centre area and the University Hospital Galway, University of Galway, the Cathedral and Nuns Island.
