But a nomination or win at the Globes makes it more likely that a voter will pick that film or performances out and prioritise watching it when they're making their voting choices. However, the most important factor in helping the Globes achieve its profile has probably been its TV deal. The Globes is a relatively small group of journalists who've come to wield huge power in awards season. "I respect Brendan Fraser's decision," she added. “I don’t think you needed the Golden Globe nominations to underline the point,” he wrote. Austin Butler, who plays the King in that biopic, is thus in a position to take the best drama actor prize from Fraser and save the organisers some face (presuming Butler turns up). Mere weeks before the 2021 show, the Los Angeles Times reported – to no great surprise – that the HFPA had no black members and that some voters had received lavish gifts. In contrast, Polley’s Women Talking, an ensemble piece concerning abused women in a Mennonite community, looks to have underperformed, scoring just two nominations, neither of them for acting. It remains to be seen how seriously the Hollywood community will regard this season’s ceremony. Paul Mescal must also have been in the running for best actor, but did not make the final five.

Golden Globes nominations 2023: The Banshees of Inisherin leads ... (The Guardian)

Martin McDonagh's black comedy emerges as early frontrunner, while Everything Everywhere All At Once picks up six and Babylon and The Fabelmans take five.

Firth has been recognised for his work in thriller The Staircase; Taron Egerton for prison chiller Black Bird and Andrew Garfield for Mormon crime drama Under the Banner of Heaven. The Golden Globes award ceremony will screen live on 10 January this year, following last year’s boycott of the ceremony by NBC. Only nine women have been up for best director in the Globes’ 80 year history, and only three have won: Barbra Streisand for Yentl in 1983, Chloé Zhao for Nomadland in 2020 and Jane Campion for The Power of the Dog in 2021. Bill Nighy vies for his first leading Golden Globe for his role as a terminally ill civil servant in Living, against frontrunner Brendan Fraser, who plays a morbidly obese teacher in The Whale. Butler’s inclusion in that category – rather than the comedy or music division – will raise eyebrows among many viewers of Baz Lurhmann’s musical biopic. No women are in the running for best director this year, and none of the 10-strong best picture nominees was directed by a woman.
