Snow and ice warnings issued for Ireland as 50 Dublin Airport flights ... (The Irish Times)

'Bitterly cold' weather expected for another week, says Met Éireann, as overnight temperatures drop below -6 degrees.

Met Éireann said the cold spell will continue through the coming week with severe frosts, ice and freezing fog at times. Outreach workers in contact with residents at the Knockalisheen Direct Provision Centre said a sense of “hopelessness” was beginning to set in after a third night of sub-zero temperatures, though a small number were moved to alternative accommodation on Friday. Met Éireann said the weather is likely to remain “bitterly cold” for another week. There will be a good deal of dry weather, but showers of hail, sleet and snow, mainly in coastal counties. That is a decision the Government has made and that is absolute. The forecaster said temperatures will reach 0 to +4 degrees in light, occasionally moderate, northerly or variable breezes.

DAA’s teams were on hand in the terminals overnight to help passengers seeking to rebook their cancelled journeys from Friday, providing water etc to those waiting at airline desks.” Then the pilot said this every hour for three or four hours, that it was going to be another hour. However, as a knock-on from the issues faced by airlines yesterday, a number of flights have been cancelled. And people were really hungry and thirsty. Over the high ground in Wicklow there could be a little bit more. That will be localised but certainly we're expecting a few snow showers and in areas that are hit by the showers there could be a few centimetres. "Tomorrow night is going to be very, very cold. The temperatures then on Monday will remain below 0C in many places," he added. There is likely to be a “cumulative” effect of several days and nights of sub-zero weather, leading to temperatures getting lower and lower, while hail, sleet and snow is likely to continue to fall on coastal counties in the coming days.
