“The projections indicate that the next two weeks are going to be quite tight in terms of the supply of electricity, largely because temperatures are going to be very low, and there isn't going to be very much wind,” the Fine Gael leader said. “And in the unlikely event that we go from an amber alert to red alert and there isn't enough electricity in the system, it is the large energy users to data centres that have their own backup that will be called on to power down.” “But I do want to reassure people that in the unlikely event that there's a shortage of electricity — and that hasn't happened yet — the first to be affected will be the major energy users, the data centres that have their own backup electricity. Please avoid the area if possible. Unfortunately the snow shower was fleeting. Sunday will be similarly bitter, and some locations are likely to have highest temperatures of only -2C and lowest temperatures of -6C, with the possibility of even colder conditions locally. There will be some lying snow and freezing fog but much of the country will be cold but clear. There is a possibility of snow today in parts of Connacht, Ulster and the midlands before a cloud mass moves in from the east tonight and tomorrow morning, bringing with it more snow and sleet. The bitter airflow will bring daytime temperatures of around freezing with night-time temperatures likely to dip to -6C and colder in places. “It switched quite quickly on us from southerly, quite tropical air in November to easterly and now to northerly, which is bringing the cold air down on top of us.” Gardaí said the roads around Kilmacrennan and Milford are in a "dangerous condition due to the drop in temperature" and that a number of cars are stuck on Lough Salt Road as a result. "Efforts are being made to assist all involved at present.

“There’s relevant information month after month or for the season as a whole.” Widhalm decided to update the snowfall data for the entire U.S. The MRCC and its project partner, the USDA Midwest Climate Hub, included states outside of their coverage area at the request of climatologists working in those regions. The MRCC covers a nine-state area, but when the center moved from Illinois to Purdue last year, some of the snowfall maps had yet to be updated with the new climate-normal data. The snow data in the toolbox is based on individual stations where measurements were made by hand every time it snowed. That’s the nature of precipitation measurements,” Widhalm said. “We combed through all of this data to make sure that these are high-quality, long-term data stations. On the weekend of Nov. The current climate “normals” period spans 1991 to 2020, replacing the previous period of 1981 to 2010. “We’re going to have several other snow statistics on version two. The toolbox also contains climate “normal” statistics for the most recent 30-year period with updates every decade. Then we improved and updated it with new visualizations and software that provide a streamlined site for accessing this snowfall data in an appealing way."

Snow in parts as bitter conditions forecast for weekend (RTE.ie)

Parts of the country woke up this morning to snow while a widespread sharp to severe frost will set in across Ireland later today.

Dense fog in Galway city added to the woes of morning commuters. With that, we had ten crews working last night from 6pm gritting those roads," Mr Collins said. Particular care is needed in and around Clifden and Letterfrack in Co Galway. The warning for Donegal remains in place until midday tomorrow. In the east of Galway, gardaí in Ballinasloe said that many roads were in a treacherous condition this morning. Also speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr Collins said that about one quarter of the overall road network in Dublin was gritted. She added that there is "a winter gritting plan in place" and she received "very little complaints in from north county Dublin, but we will continue to monitor and any areas that we get reports on that it is particularly bad, we will certainly go out and address it". Bryan Cannon, Director for Roads Services, Donegal County Council, said that 1,400km of roads were gritted in the county. Bus Éireann said it had to cancel a number of scheduled services and a small number of school transport services in the western region. He said people should leave a gap to the car in front and make sure their movements are "slow and deliberate". He advised people that they should keep a blanket in their cars, saying that it is "great obviously if you do have a breakdown provider" as well as keeping the mobile phone charged, keeping a shovel in the car if in hilly areas and to "let people know your route as well". Ladbrokes are now offering odds of 10/11 for there to be snow anywhere in the country on December 25, in from earlier odds of 4/6. However, he said the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) and Eirgrid have taken steps to work with high-energy users to manage pressures on the system. The icy weather has seen many flights due to leave Dublin this morning delayed, with knock-on delays likely to continue for the rest of the day. Snowfall was particularly evident in the north and east of the country on Thursday evening and early this morning. The forecaster is warning "sharp to severe frost with icy surfaces" and "hazardous conditions" overall. It has been a snowy start to the morning for some parts of the country, as temperatures dropped as low as -4C last night.
