The double Child Benefit payment is part of 8 lump-sum payments totalling €1.2 billion to help with the cost of living. “I’m very pleased to announce that 638,000 families will receive a double Child Benefit payment this week to support them with the cost of living. “These will include the €400 lump sum fuel allowance payment, the €200 payment for people living alone, the €500 payment for carers, the €500 support for people with disabilities and the €500 payment for those in receipt of the Working Family Payment. Minister Humphreys announced the details of the double Child Benefit payment during a visit to the Ballyroan Community and Youth Centre in Rathfarnham, South Dublin. These will include the €400 lump sum fuel allowance payment, €200 payment for people living alone, a €500 payment for carers, €500 support for people with disabilities, and a €500 payment for people receiving the Working Family Payment. The payment is not means-tested and is paid out for all children up to the age of 16, and for children up to 18 years of age if they are in full-time education or have a disability. The payment of €280 is being paid out in respect of 1.2m children in 638,000 families, Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys said.

She said a lot of families with two parents on good incomes “have a lot of costs” and “I want to support working people who have children.” Asked about wealthy families who will get the payment and whether she would encourage them to give it back, Ms Humphreys said that a lot of working and middle income families who need the payment will get it. But Ms Humphreys added: “The majority of people that I’m meeting, when I’m out and about talking to people - they need this payment. Speaking to reporters in Dublin, Ms Humphreys said: “We want to put money back in people’s pockets and we want to support people with the increase in the cost of living.” People on the living alone allowance will receive an extra €200 lump sum this month, with carers to receive an extra €500 in their support grant during the third week of November. The first of three €200 electricity credits to help offset the expected spikes in household bills during the winter will also kick in this month, with the credits to appear on the first household bills from Tuesday.
