It is understood Fr Bobit was attacked when he came upon the intruder at the front door of the home he shares with two other priests.

Bishop of Waterford and Lismore, Alphonsus Cullinan, said he was “very shocked” by what happened and said he hoped the victim will make a full recovery. Fr Bobit has been living in Ireland for some time and along with his colleagues Fr Russell and Fr John, works in the hospital and runs the chapel there. A man in his 20s was arrested shortly after the incident and was being detained at Waterford Garda Station. The property is located in the grounds of Waterford Regional Hospital where Fr Bobit is a chaplain and he was rushed for treatment and remains in a serious condition. Last night gardai said the victim, who is in his 30s, was in a serious but stable condition in hospital. “They are on call 24 hours a day and live in that residence on the hospital grounds.

A bishop has asked people to pray for the priest who was stabbed, and for the man who attacked him. The circumstances of and motive for the attack are unclear but the alarm was raised and the priest was taken to Waterford University Hospital for treatment for what are believed to have been stab or slash injuries. The priest, who is in his 30s, was treated in hospital throughout the day for what were described as serious but not life-threatening injuries but was well enough to return home later to continue his recovery.

The court heard he met a priest coming from the bathroom who he “stabbed six times” in the face and head, and four times in the back. The accused discarded his shoes and socks and returned to his bed in the department of psychiatry, where he was arrested shortly afterwards, the detective added. It is alleged that he “scaled a wall” from the department of psychiatry at UHW and gained access to the nearby chaplains’ house, where three priests live.

A MAN escaped from a hospital psychiatry department before a “violent attack” on a priest, a court has heard.Fr Bobit Augusthy was stabbed six.

Judge John Cheatle refused bail after a Garda objection and remanded the accused in custody. Both of these were granted by the judge. He was arrested shortly afterwards by gardai. He met the priest coming from the bathroom who he “stabbed six times” in the face, head and four times in the back, the court heard. He then discarded his shoes and socks and returned to his bed in the Department of Psychiatry. Det Garda Harty said the “violent attack” was interrupted by another priest in the house.
