Horror rooted in cultural myths and religious fears can be the most resonant and scary for Halloween viewing.
If this list were fully a combination of theatrical and TV productions, Midnight Mass would be at the top of the list. CARRIE — A testament to the dangerous, awful conditions in extremist religious households and the trauma it inflicts on those trapped in its persecutory boundaries. THE EXORCIST III — A worthy follow-up to the original horror classic that goes in some unexpected directions and relies once again on the conflict between loss of faith and the power of belief in the darkest of moments. ANGEL HEART — Among the most controversial films of its era, largely because of the patronizing attitude of folks offended to see Lisa Bonet transition from sitcom fame to admittedly graphic horror and sexual content. [REC]2 — This is not just one of the best religious horror films, it’s also one of the best zombie films and most original in its concept of where the undead come from. SAINT MAUD — A remarkable character study about self-denial, religious extremism, isolation, and mental illness, and among the best horror films of the 2020s. FRAILTY — One of the least-seen but most shockingly good horror movies of the 1980s is also a fantastic blend of both at-face-value religious horror storytelling and subtextual examination of extremism, with excellent twists and turns along the way. I also offered my list of [the top 10 scariest moments in horror movie history](https://www.forbes.com/sites/markhughes/2022/10/28/the-top-10-scariest-moments-in-horror-movies/?sh=78b1db912614), and even [a list counting down and reviewing every film in the entire Halloween horror franchise](https://www.forbes.com/sites/markhughes/2022/10/28/the-top-10-scariest-moments-in-horror-movies/?sh=78b1db912614). THE OMEN — A straightforward story imagining the Biblical book of Revelations in a modern setting, the son of Satan is presented as a little boy surrounded by sinister forces visiting ghastly punishment on those who try to oppose the Antichrist. It’s compelling psychological horror, so don’t expect a bunch of bloodletting, but also don’t be fooled into thinking it won’t deliver the horror when the time comes. I also didn’t just include films that were explicitly religious without really being horror films, thus tremendous movies like for example The Rapture (1991) aren’t appropriate for this list (but if you’ve not seen that movie, I strongly urge you to seek it out, it’s amazing). I wanted movies that took their religious themes seriously and used them not only as plot-points but as the engine for the story and character arcs.

The second and final of Rob Zombie’s remakes, Halloween II is set a year after the first movie and follows Laurie Strode as she desperately tries to evade the terrifying clutches of Michael Myers. Halloween III: Season of the Witch can be purchased from services like Amazon Prime, YouTube and iTunes. Unfortunately, the success of Halloween H20 was not enough to make the eighth movie in the franchise anyone’s favourite. With even more scares and the return of Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie, this is a great sequel and well worth watching if you’re looking for the same creepy atmosphere as the first. This is the movie that started it all and introduced us to the terrifying character of Micheal Myers. The spookiest season is finally upon us and it’s the perfect time to binge some of the scariest horror movies.

“I just like the old nostalgic type of movies,” the 22-year-old said. His daughters are hitting the streets as characters from Paw Patrol this year. But Agbaji isn’t limited to just horror movies from the ’80s and ’90s. The former Sixth-Man of the Year award winner has Chucky and Leatherface from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre tattooed just above his right hip. That’s because most of them sit on the thigh of his left leg and are covered on game night. “And’ Smile’, that was really scary.”

I loved the way that life and death were portrayed, where the land of the dead was bright and colourful with a lot of celebration, while the land of the living was cold and dreary and highly uninviting. Gomez and Morticia Addams are #couplegoals and Wednesday Addams is one of the most iconic characters in pop culture. The Addams family is a Halloween classic for a reason. Hocus Pocus is a brilliant way to kick off that Halloween movie marathon for the season. Hocus Pocus (1993) is about a teenage boy, Max, who just moved to Salem, Massachusetts and on Halloween night, accidentally resurrects a trio of sister witches who were executed in the 17th century. Halloween movies are not horror movies but are their own separate category that merges dark, gothic and macabre aesthetics with excellent comedy to provide a brilliant source of entertainment for the fall.

But when Ben, the 13-year-old star of the film, sees his dad dating again, he freaks out and programs PAT to be a 1950s-esque housewife in an attempt to convince his dad that he doesn’t need to replace the mom in their life. Burton’s Frankenweenie remake, rendered in the stop-motion animation style of The Nightmare Before Christmas, keeps the throwback elements of the original short while expanding the coming-of-age arc of a young Victor Frankenstein and bringing an entire neighborhood of weirdos to life in the director’s signature style. At 29 minutes, the short is a scrappy, silly, black-and-white adventure of a science-minded boy and his soon-to-be-undead dog. Delicately animated by Selick and his team from an idea by Tim Burton (it was the first animated movie nominated for a Visual Effects Oscar, which it lost to Jurassic Park), Nightmare Before Christmas features terrific music from Danny Elfman and is an absolute treat (no trick) for the senses. Audiences have been treated to some stellar horror movies in the last few years, but here are 10 you should avoid this Halloween.
And though it's very satisfying to see them battle it out in the finale, the damage has already been done with a meandering plotline and boring subtext. It should leave audiences on the edge of their seats, rather than predicting when a zombie is going to be behind a door when someone closes it. And the underwhelming special effects that go into the action just stand out like a burnt thumb. Unfortunately, it's just a derivative experience that neither terrifies the audience nor offers them something new in time for Halloween. 2002's "Ju-On" and its American remake, "The Grudge," are two of the most infamous horror movies of the early 2000s because of their chilling, unforgiving nature. What follows is a mish-mash of horror tropes that fail to excite or terrify the audience in any way. But the 2020 chapter of the franchise is highly disappointing. [Kiefer Sutherland](https://www.insider.com/father-and-son-actors-in-movies-together-2017-6) back from the cast of the original movie to play a completely different character. The cast is fine, but it all just feels incredibly mediocre when it could've pushed the concept to terrifying new heights. It needed someone to give the film an actual identity. The similarities to "A Quiet Place" definitely don't help, as it uses a number of similar sequences and jump scares to try to make the most of its tight 90-minute run time. We live in ostensibly sexless times, though we remain undeniably sex-soaked beings. Even as today's adolescents are more likely to express their sexual identity ...
In the throes of passion, we may for a moment seem to touch the divine, to transcend the tyranny of time and body, but even this moment—this petit mort—gets us nowhere but disappointment, for desire can never truly be satiated. As we seek to fill the void of our being, to overcome our deficient animal nature, we give into that animal nature most completely. In Carrie, Brian de Palma’s 1976 adaptation of the novel by Stephen King, the mother of the titular protagonist preaches to her daughter that “the first sin was intercourse.” This is an odd reading of the Bible, but not one without antecedents. Of course, this is not a poem of literal patricide, but one that explores the nature of senescence. “While violence cloaks itself in a plethora of disguises,” according to the opening narration of Faster Pussycat! The objects of our desire always remain a mystery to us, even—and perhaps especially—if we marry them. If, as Freud claimed, “the essence of repression lies simply in turning something away, and keeping it at a distance, from the conscious,” then Norman Bates, from Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 shocker Psycho, may be the poster boy of sexual repression. All horror is the horror of sexual desire. The first title they gave him was “Cat People.” They undoubtedly expected Lewton would make a copycat of The Wolf Man, but he gave them something simultaneously more unsettling and more erotic. Part of what made the erotic such an integral aspect of a century of scary movies was that the horror genre was the main genre of transgression. No matter how prevalent sex is or isn’t, no matter how permissible a society may or may not be, existence is predicated upon the erotic, so the cultural myths of a healthy society must tussle with our libidinal entanglements. This from the franchise that pretty much started—even if unintentionally—the trend of “Sex = Death” horror that came to define the slasher subgenre for two decades or more.

Sam (Jude Law) travels to the island to grieve over the murder of his son, while Helen (Naomie Harris) arrives seeking answers. Bouchard meanwhile is a skeptic, refusing to believe in demons even as she comes face to face with them on a regular basis. Religious figures would go on to play major roles in Supernatural's expanding storyline, with even God himself being a pivotal character. Instead, it explores the same disturbing themes as the original, while creating its own identity that helps to flesh out the world of the popular film series. The series elevates itself above its peers thanks to its unique and likable protagonist, and he is joined by a great supporting cast. With their marriage fractured by the unimaginable tragedy, they enroll in transitory object therapy as a way to heal. Initially focused on simply indulging in many vices, a murder and a chance encounter with an intriguing detective cause Lucifer to become a consultant for the LAPD as he helps them solve cases. A detective tries to make sense of the clearly supernatural killings, while a charismatic young man begins to organize a deadly cult. When giant ape-like creatures appear out of nowhere and murder people they have deemed to be sinners, the country falls into a wave of religion-fueled chaos that brings out the worst in humanity. When a force intrudes upon his body and grants him new powers, he embarks on a journey to find God, dealing with characters from both heaven and hell along the way. When a charismatic priest arrives at the island, his tales of spiritual salvation draw followers to his side, though bad omens begin to befall the town as the residents become divided. Horror is becoming more and more popular on the small screen these days, and with that religious horror has made the transition over as well.

If that’s not quite enough, there are twelve others, all set on the night itself or during the holiday run-up. There are plenty of less obvious movies, though, set around the holiday—some of them spooky-adjacent, others a bit more surprising. These movies all have connections to the season: They’re either set on Halloween, or have pivotal scenes involving seasonal festivities.
