Kilruane MacDonaghs pay fitting tribute to fallen star (RTE.ie)

After ending a 37-year wait to become Tipperary SHC champions, Kilruane MacDonaghs stepped away from the celebrations, kneeling in a circle around manager ...

"That was a massive turning point in the game. Jack Peters, for the second week in a row, put a hamstring strain to the back of his mind. "They tell me, reading the media, Kilruane should’ve been there a long time ago. As for All-Ireland champions Ballygunner in a Munster quarter-final next Sunday: "That’s for another day. "I came from a rugby background and the dynamic of the game is a little bit different compared to hurling. It took a number of defensive switches until they got the formula right to halt the Kiladangan threat. That’s the way he was and that’s the way these guys are all year. He’s destined for big things, I’ve no doubt in my mind, but I’m not involved in that part of it." "Craig Morgan was a massive loss but his loss inside the white lines was a massive gain for Liam O’Kelly outside the white lines. Niall O’Meara hobbled his way to the man of the match award, ignoring the effects of a knee injury. I’d the bike organised for him there on the side. Craig Morgan, their Tipperary starter, chief among them, having been as ruled out with a cruciate injury at the end of August.

Kilruane MacDonaghs paid a poignant tribute to the late Dillon Quirke, after they claimed the Tipperary senior hurling championship.

“There’s a bond between Kilruane and Clonoulty [Rossmore] that’s absolutely phenomenal. Pausing for a moment on the area of the pitch where Quirke took ill, the Kilruane MacDonaghs squad raised a red helmet in honour of the 24-year-old after the game. In August, Quirke passed away during a club game between Clonoulty-Rossmore and Kilruane MacDonaghs after taking ill on the Semple Stadium field of play.

Jerome Cahill, Dillon Quirke and the ties that bind (The Irish Times)

Tragic Tipperary hurler Dillon Quirke still very much in the thoughts of newly-crowned county champions Kilruane MacDonaghs.

On Sunday they did it in the best traditions of the club, battling the odds and producing their best in adversity. It was the score that finally turned the match irretrievably against Kiladangan. It’s been number 30 for the rest of the year after that awful day. It gave us great perspective for the year and how fortunate we were to be able to get up and go and be out there hurling; how precious life is. Kilruane captain Jerome Cahill recalls that Dan Quirke, Dillon’s father, had come into their dressingroom after the abandoned match with Clonoulty had been eventually played and spoken to them. For Kilruane the sense of connection with the tragic episode was especially strong.

Late Dillon Quirke a driving factor for Kilruane MacDonaghs, says ... (Irish Mirror)

'Dillon died before our eyes. We'll never forget that day and what it meant.'

“A mixture of losing rucks, breaking ball and not converting chances meant we were very fortunate to be just five down. We really came thundering into the game and felt very fortunate to be only five points down at half-time. We were coming in on the back of that. By God, did we take it!” There was no sense of that in our camp. We definitely don’t forget the Quirke family.”
