"But sadly there are some occasions when despite our best efforts we are unable to reach those patients as swiftly as we would like, particularly at times of extreme pressure on the service as we are seeing currently." From top to bottom: track marshals are the most visible example of volunteer involvement in race, but there are many other ways to experience Le Mans, as shown here by Rémi, Isabelle, Antoine and Dominique. The couple formed a great team: as a first responder, he took care of the track safety part and Isabelle the medical par. Track marshals are the kingpins of the event, serving as the eyes and ears of Race Direction. There are now more than 100 Club ACO member volunteers who work toward the smooth running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans! Mathilde Boulgarian, also a track marshal, values above all the relationships forged within her team: "We get together outside of the race, they've become like a second family, with a very special bond." The centennial running of the race is the perfect opportunity to pay them tribute.

At the time of the call we were experiencing a high demand on our services. They said in a statement: ‘South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS) can confirm that we were called at 15:53 to Cranleigh Road, Portchester to reports of a medical emergency. ‘You don’t know what’s going on underneath, so we made a judgement call to manually keep his head still. ‘Portchester were fantastic throughout, with their chairman Paul Kelly at the front. On arriving at QA Hospital, the player was given an X-ray which thankfully showed no major damage. They were giving out cups of tea. ‘At 18:47 we received a call from the scene which advised that the patients condition had changed and at this point the call was upgraded and the nearest available response was dispatched after handing their previous patient into the care of the hospital, they arrived on scene with the patient at 19:44. It wasn’t a malicious challenge, just an accident. They didn’t want to move Bailey because they weren’t sure how bad his injury was. ‘The kind of injury we all know that the quicker the assessment from the medical experts in this field is received the better, and the quicker a scan can be carried out on the injury the better. They didn’t want to cause any permanent damage. During the whole of the wait for an ambulance, Gibson and Bunce took it in turns – for about half an hour each time - to support the player’s neck, in case there was a serious problem.
