When The Mother leaves the house to hunt Tess down, Tess runs The Mother over with her car. AJ assumes Frank is a victim of The Mother and promises to get him out. AJ refuses to drink from the bottle, so the woman—referred to in the script as The Mother—drags AJ away and forces him to breastfeed. Then he goes back to his house—the same house where Tess and AJ will one day be trapped. And with that, the movie ends! Back in the house, AJ finds Frank in a deteriorating state in bed. The movie flashes back to the 1980s. [Barbarian](https://decider.com/movie/barbarian-2022/), one of the buzziest horror films of 2022, is now streaming on [HBO Max](https://play.hbomax.com/player/urn:hbo:feature:GY0Wn0wkehKOCiwEAAABG), free to anyone with a subscription. The movie abruptly cuts away to Los Angeles, where we are introduced to a new character: sitcom actor AJ Gilbride (played by Justin Long). Barbarian review: this horror debut is a terrifyingly good time (Time Out)

This is the sort of horror movie that's best to go into almost clueless. If you prefer it that way, just know this: Jesus Christ, it's terrifying. And funny.

In Barbarian, you won’t know what’s coming from one minute to the next, but you’ll almost certainly come out eager to see what Cregger does next. He’s using your horror knowledge against you by rarely giving you what the genre has conditioned you to anticipate. Take someone who won’t shout at/sue/divorce you if you crush their hand to mush in fear.

It’s not often that such an outlandish horror film gets mainstream play (in recent years, only Malignant had the same effect), so it’s highly recommended to relish this opportunity on the big screen. This is a feature that majorly benefits from knowing as little as possible but it’s essential to contextualise the story at hand to understand why there is so much hype behind the film following its critical and commercial success in the US where it was released in September. The confusion over the mixed messaging is courtesy of a greedy landlord (Justin Long) who has carelessly listed the property on multiple sites.
