Mata should have given Sligo the lead late on, but he side footed his effort wide of Brian Maher’s goal after a fantastic run by Karl O’Sullivan. A special team. A special group. Higgins, on the other hand, shuffled his pack somewhat and made five changes from Friday’s draw with Shelbourne. In the end, the Candystripes couldn’t find enough to force a late winner, confirming Shamrock Rovers as champions. Richard Brush had to be alert to make the save as Mark Connolly nodded towards goal, before Cian Kavanagh forced another save from the veteran in the Rovers goals.

The 26-year-old somehow blasting wide from five yards out after another Will Patching set piece worried the Sligo rearguard. The ex-Longford man could only direct his effort straight at Brush however. Ruaidhri Higgins made a double change on 63 minutes, sending on both Michael Duffy and Jamie McGonigle and it almost resulted in an immediate goal. It took Sligo Rovers a good half hour to offer any sort of threat and they could well have taken the lead only for Brian Maher to deny them twice in the space of 20 seconds. Derry City should have gone ahead 10 minutes into the second half.

It's got us to this point, to being the best team in the country and just stay with it no matter what happens and when we went one down, you could see there was no panic, no deer in the headlights moments," Bradley said after last week's win over St Pat's put them within sight of the league, Rovers now able to enjoy Thursday's European tie at home to Belgian side Gent without the stress of the title race. We finished the game really strong and they were hanging on, but it just wasn't to be. Shamrock Rovers proved their mettle to win coveted three-in-a-row (Irish Examiner)

Danny Mandroiu did what Bradley didn’t by joining Lincoln City in the summer and they even survived a long layoff for defensive giant Pico Lopes, through a serious knee injury, to last the distance. Acting swiftly in the summer by capturing Daniel Cleary – another of the Dundalk alumni – was a masterstroke. Rovers possessed enough quality to virtually lead from the front till the end, absorbing a couple of blips, to bulldoze towards their hat-trick. Still, a 16-point margin over St Patrick’s Athletic underlined the gap and hopes of closing it were damaged when their young manager was enticed back to his beloved Dundalk for this season. Presenting one of Fenlon’s junior staff members his first senior role deviated from their tradition of snaring established names and uncertainty clouded the decision in the first couple of years. The three-in-a-row of titles Shamrock Rovers entrusted Stephen Kenny with completing in 2012 was delivered alone in full by Stephen Bradley.

When the ECL group stages began with Djurgardens of Sweden playing out a nil-all draw in Tallaght on September 8th, Rovers were four points clear of Derry with a game in hand. “You’re making four or five changes that you don’t want to make because it upsets the rhythm.” In the same period, Rovers gathered 17 of a possible 21 points to keep Derry at arms-length. “The second goal is on me,” said Bradley afterwards. Last night’s result at the Showgrounds also denies fans a much-anticipated grandstand finish as Derry travel to Tallaght on Sunday for the penultimate league match. When the inevitable wobble occurred, Derry under Ruaidhrí Higgins, with Michael Duffy back from injury, were the only team positioned to reel them in.

Shamrock Rovers retain title (FM104)

Shamrock Rovers secured a third SSE Airtricity Premier Division title in a row last night, without kicking a ball.

UCD’s 1-1 draw away to Shelbourne last night moved the Students three-points clear of Harps at the foot of the table. The result means Rovers can no longer be caught at the top of the table. Their nearest challengers Derry City could only manage a goalless draw away to Sligo Rovers.
