Ireland chased down their 147 target in style to book their Super 12s place and send the two-time champions out at the first hurdle.

You’re the one who’s going to take it deep.’” Lorcan Tucker came in to bat and scored 45 not out, hitting the winning runs to seal a memorable victory for the loss of only one wicket. “I’m disappointed in myself and how it has gone but we will live to fight another day. “It’s satisfying and humbling and emotional as well,” player-of-the-match Raza, who also took a stunning catch and claimed a wicket, said. “We set out some things we wanted to achieve as a team and how we wanted to play,” he added. Paul Stirling made 66 not out and built a first-wicket partnership of 73 with Andy Balbirnie, before the captain was caught at point off Akeal Hosein for 37.

T20 World Cup: Ireland reach Super 12s and eliminate West Indies ... (Sky Sports)

Ireland have qualified for the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup and eliminated two-time champions West Indies after a thumping nine-wicket win in Hobart.

"So to get over line today, in the fashion that we did, was amazing. Ireland batted fantastically and bowled well, too." Player of the Match, Gareth Delany: "It is obviously an incredible day for us. We just want to pit ourselves against the best in the world and who knows where that can take us?" "Once you put yourselves in that situation [the Super 12s] anything can happen. It's a really proud day to be Irish.

The 25-year-old returned figures of 3-16, setting the tone for Irish victory against the West Indies.

It’s a big game, both teams want to go through and we don’t think we’re that far off the West Indies, others might. “That role is completely reversed, guys have come up the order. “Hopefully that can continue into the next round as well.” Delany, aged 25, grew up watching a series of famous Irish tournament victories: Pakistan in 2007, England in 2011, the West Indies in 2015. Some 364 days later, nearly a year to the day, Delany reversed both his and Ireland’s fortunes, only this time with the ball. When Ireland were knocked out of the T20 World Cup last year by Namibia, Gareth Delany, in his own words, “choked”.

West Indies would have been further outclassed had it not been for an unbeaten 62 from Brandon King. So it proved as Stirling and Balbirnie tucked into some wayward bowling. This is an awful result for West Indies, who will not feature in the main phase of a T20 World Cup for the first time. From the moment West Indies won the toss and elected to bat, Ireland were the superior side. Ireland stun Windies to advance at T20 World Cup (RTE.ie)

Ireland have qualified for the T20 World Cup Super 12s with a superb defeat of the West Indies in Hobart, Australia on Friday morning.

It's the second time Ireland have advanced to the next stage of the tournament. In contrast, having already fallen to a surprise defeat to Scotland, it marks just the second time the West Indies, 2012 and 2016 T20 World Cup champions, have made a first-round exit. Ireland stunned the West Indies by nine wickets in Hobart to book their place in the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup and send the two-time champions crashing out.

T20 World Cup 2022: team-by-team guide to the Super 12s stage (The Guardian)

Australia look favourites to defend their title on home soil but England, India, New Zealand and Pakistan all pose a threat.

That has continued into the World Cup itself, and Raza was not only Zimbabwe’s leading run-scorer in the opening group, among their bowlers he ranked second on economy rate (just behind Tendai Chatara) and second on wickets (after Blessing Muzarabani). He showed what he is capable of in the recent series in India, which he started with a three-ball duck but followed it with a brilliant, unbeaten 47-ball 106, and a five-ball 19. There are some issues with the rest of the top order, and as England proved in winning a seven-game series there last month they are hardly unbeatable. [Dutch lost to Sri Lanka](https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2022/oct/20/sri-lanka-and-netherlands-reach-twenty20-cricket-world-cup-super-12-stage) in their final first-round group game a dejected Scott Edwards described their disappointment. They were the most exciting team of the last World Cup and on these surfaces should be more dangerous and, if such a thing is possible, more fun. There are some good players in their squad – Max O’Dowd is in fine form and Bas de Leede has been both their most dangerous bowler and second-best batter – but they score too slowly (6.40 runs per over in their group) and will surely struggle to cope with the step up in class. Much of the New Zealand team will be familiar from last year’s run to the final, and any side containing Devon Conway, Kane Williamson, Glenn Phillips, Trent Boult and Tim Southee is going to be dangerous. With pace and bounce at a premium in Australia they have the tournament’s quickest bowler in Mark Wood, and their surfeit of all-round options allows next-level batting depth. [victory over West Indies](https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2022/oct/21/cricket-t20-world-cup-ireland-west-indies-scotland-zimbabwe) in their final game of the opening stage. But Maxwell has a habit of rising to big occasions and if Finch’s 76 against India in Australia’s final warm-up game has successfully kickstarted the captain’s engine they should be contenders. Bangladesh lost every game in last year’s Super 12s and don’t appear to have improved since. Unpromisingly, the only other automatic qualifier for this year’s Super 12s that they have ever beaten in this format is Bangladesh.

Ben Stokes vows to use memory of 2016 T20 World Cup final as ... (The Guardian)

The England all-rounder has insisted he is a better player thanks to his final over mauling at the hands of Carlos Brathwaite six years ago.

“We haven’t come here to make up the numbers, the players certainly don’t think like that and we certainly don’t train like that. “We just want to play the team, play the situation and stay very calm and level-headed, and then move on to the next game.” “It’s a fantastic opportunity for me,” Trott said. “T20 is completely different, full of energy, so you just need to practise more because it’s such a different type of cricket,” he said. “Going back to the 50-over game, we were No 1 for a long time going into that World Cup and that doesn’t stand you anywhere when you come into knockout games,” he said. The more you are in those [key matches] and the more you come out on top of them, obviously I think that does give you a slight upper hand maybe on some of the teams that haven’t.

Who will win World Cup? A look at all 12 teams (BBC Sport)

BBC Sport analyses the remaining teams in the T20 World Cup and makes predictions as the tournament reaches the Super 12 phase.

They have beaten England in this competition twice. Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam showed against England they are an opening pair for the ages, capable of winning matches on their own. How the bowling attack, likely Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal copes without Bumrah will decide their chances. Fast bowlers Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada, two of the quickest around, are electric and Tabraiz 'the magician' Shamsi is an effective wrist spinner. Mohammad Nabi is the captain, aged 37, in a much-changed squad. Once again, leg-spinning sensation Rashid Khan is their star player and will be backed up by two more quality spinners in Mujeeb ur Rahman and Qais Ahmad. Opener Pathum Nissanka hit a crucial 74 against the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday too. Prediction: Super 12 So too are other regulars, David Warner, Glenn Maxwell and Prediction: Super 12s Will home advantage help Australia defend their title 12 months on? Dark horse who can't be ignored; minnows that shocked world: World Cup team guide.

The two groups of six compete in another round robin with the top two of each group going into the knockout stage. The top two teams from each group progressed. Another big upset along the way is not out of the realm of possibility. Afghanistan can barely be called a ‘long shot’ at winning the T20 World Cup, but that doesn’t mean it can’t create an upset or two along the way. We really don’t know how Zimbabwe will fare, with this being the first time they have qualified for the Super 12 stage of the tournament. LIVE: Aussies 'stunned' by little-known star; Kiwi gamble pays off after costly error.

“At times I’ve been a bit more negative to left-arm bowlers. There’s some technical things I can do to a left-armer that can help that. Williamson missed his sweep shot and opted to review, but ball-tracking showed the delivery was going on to hit middle stump. I still feel as though I’ve got a really solid game plan. “If there is rain around and the game is shortened, that can dictate what you do with your team,” he said earlier in the week. “It was nice for them to have a bit of a conversation with an experienced spinner in this format.” “They’re very clinical at home and in most places that they play, which is a reflection of where they stand in the game,” he said. [Josh Inglis ruled out of the tournament](https://www.foxsports.com.au/cricket/t20-world-cup-2021/cricket-world-cup-2022-josh-inglis-injury-backup-team-australia-aaron-finch-golf-squad-cameron-green/news-story/6207aa7544d6f0d3a09e1b915d042872) after a freak accident earlier this week. Adam Gilchrist said in commentary that the home crowd appeared to be “somewhat stunned”. Australia had a chance to stop Allen in the third over when he was on 19 but Adam Zampa dropped the catch at short fine leg. Australia’s title defence at the T20 World Cup is underway as they face New Zealand at what is expected to be a capacity crowd at Sydney Cricket Ground. It proved to be a costly error with Allen going on to make 42 runs off just 16 balls to set-up the New Zealand innings.

T20 World Cup 2022 Super 12: Australia v New Zealand – live (The Guardian)

Over-by-over report: The reigning champions begin the defence of their title against their trans-Tasman rivals. Join Jonathan Howcroft for updates.

1st over: New Zealand 14-0 (Allen 14, Conway 0) Starc begins on a good line and length over the wicket to the right-handed Allen for a dot. Aaron Finch is mindful of the weather and made the obvious choice to chase. The wicket is straw coloured and dry, and Allen believes it’s going to play truly, swatting the second ball for a one-bounce four over wide long-on, then a third ball six with an even cleaner smite. The ball trickles away for four and is subsequently belted to the opposite segment of the boundary with a glorious lofted cover drive. Conway recognises he needs to rotate the strike, which he does, allowing Allen to sashay down the pitch and calmly loft a six-iron over the sight-screen. 6th over: New Zealand 65-1 (Conway 19, Williamson 4) Cummins begins his second over with a dot but Conway responds with an inventive bunt for four down to third, stepping to leg, then reaching to deflect a delivery barely on the cut strip. 4th over: New Zealand 56-0 (Allen 42, Conway 14) Marcus Stoinis is called on much earlier than he imagined, and after Conway strokes a couple through the covers there’s a shout for a catch behind but the ball clipped the batter’s grille, not his gloves, as a loopy bouncer arced through to Matthew Wade. 7th over: New Zealand 74-1 (Conway 26, Williamson 6) As the field spreads, Conway welcomes Adam Zampa to the attack by carving a sumptuous cover drive for four. Conway and Williamson are happy to deal in ones and twos with the latter (eight from 12) still yet to find his timing, especially to the off-pace deliveries. 12th over: New Zealand 112-1 (Conway 48, Williamson 21) Starc remains in the attack as the floodlights take full effect and it’s a superb over full of pace and swing, keeping the Black Caps honest and threatening the stumps with every delivery. 11th over: New Zealand 109-1 (Conway 46, Williamson 20) Immediately after the mid-innings drinks break Williamson carts a Stoinis legside delivery over the square-leg fence in a statement of intent. 15th over: New Zealand 144-2 (Conway 70, Phillips 7) Zampa beats the outside edge of Conway’s bat with a wrong’un but the opener’s back foot remains grounded as Wade removes the bails.

T20 World Cup: Teams, format, prize money and India vs Pakistan (Aljazeera.com)

The tournament is divided into two parts: qualification round and the Super 12s that are followed by semis and final.

Recently crowned Asian champions Sri Lanka had to go through the first round of matches in order to qualify for the Super 12s. Winners of the first-ever T20 World Cup and the top-ranked T20 side in the world, India have always found themselves to be pre-tournament favourites at most ICC events in the last two decades. They finished last year’s tournament bottom of their Super12s group and failed to win a match in the recently concluded Asia Cup. Pakistan were favourites for the title last year after blazing through their Super 12s group, until they ran into Australia in the semi-final. The retirement of Eoin Morgan passed the captaincy to Jos Buttler, who will be happy to see all-rounder Ben Stokes and opener Alex Hales back in the side. The Super 12s will see all six teams in each group compete in a round robin format.

New Zealand thump Australia in Super 12 opener (BBC Sport)

Devon Conway hits an unbeaten 92 as New Zealand claim a comprehensive 89-run win over hosts Australia at the T20 World Cup.

For the fifth game running, Australia skipper Aaron Finch won the toss and elected to bowl. The problem for the Aussies is the number of top sides in Group 1, all waiting to pounce on the champions. With Neesham taking the bulk of the strike in the final over, Conway was denied the chance to reach a maiden T20 international hundred, but his classy 58-ball knock put New Zealand well on their way to victory. "It was basically how not to play a T20 and we got beaten in all aspects of the game." A stunning diving catch from Glenn Phillips, running around from deep cover to remove Marcus Stoinis, left the home side 50-4 in the ninth over and all but ended the game as a contest with Australia slumping to 111 all out in the 18th over. Australia's chase faltered early on with David Warner's bizarre dismissal - bowled via his thigh pad and the back of his bat - the first of three wickets to go down in the powerplay.

James Neesham also played his part to perfection with four overs to play, battering 26 from 13 balls including a six from the final ball of the innings. New Zealand thrash holders Australia in T20 World Cup opener (Aljazeera.com)

Inspired by Conway's 92, New Zealand got their revenge for last year's T20 WC final loss to Australia.

The 23-year-old Finn Allen hit the second ball of the match for a boundary and the third for a six over mid-on, and then drove a boundary straight down the ground as New Zealand took 14 off the first over from paceman Mitchell Starc. The match at a sold-out Sydney Cricket Ground was a repeat of the 2021 final in Dubai when Australia powered to an eight-wicket win and their maiden T20 World Cup crown. Devon Conway carried his bat on Saturday with a majestic unbeaten 92 to help New Zealand post 200-3 before Australia were skittled for 111 in Sydney to make a nightmare start to their title defence.
