Niall Horan's mother defends her son over Guinness-gate (RTE.ie)

Niall Horan's mother has defended her son following complaints that he was seen drinking alcohol on a recent episode of his new show with Lewis Capaldi.

I got so anxious because all of a sudden you had to be doing interviews and meetings in England because he was underage. Niall donated part of his fee for his new show with Capaldi to charity and Maura said: "He has a big heart. I was worried if he was sick, I couldn’t get near him to give him a hug or a hot drink, but he’s well minded. "He eats very healthily compared to me," Maura said. His dad has them sitting on his wall, coming from Germany and Australia and singing in the letterbox. I think he's partial to a good pint of Guinness, yes." I can only speak about the part where he came to Mullingar and he was in the pub. Speaking to Joe Duffy on RTÉ Radio 1's Liveline on Niall's mother, Maura Gallagher, said: "He was holding a pint of Guinness but it was Zero Zero all the way. "To be honest, my friends all said it was a lovely show and they never mentioned Guinness. To me, he’s just Niall." Please review their details and accept them to load the content. I’m not going to give her name!"

Mammy Maura also lifted the lid on Niall's girlfriend as she took to the programme to discuss his new homecoming documentary.

“She’s from England, and she’s not in the business, that’s a good one. “But they were very well minded and looked after and had fantastic security all the time. “I can only speak for the part when he was in Mullingar, I was there and 0.0 was given. I watched the show the other night and Guinness didn’t come into my head at all...I was just laughing at the two of them. And when you think of him as a world star, it is mind blowing really. Maura said: “People are entitled to their opinion, but when I heard it[the show] was coming on I couldn’t wait to see Niall and Lewis. You didn’t have to worry about the dangers of the outside world, just you’d feel sorry if he was sick and you couldn’t get near him to give him and hug and a hot drink, you know.” “I got so anxious and everything because all of a sudden you had to be doing interviews and meetings in England, because he was underage. “And to be honest, even my friends said it was a lovely show, they didn’t even mention the Guinness part, it was just to see Niall and Lewis. Asked if she ever imagined this being the outcome when he went off to step out on the X Factor stage 12 years ago, she added: “Never in a million years,” and told how she struggled at the time herself. “It is strange being his mother and watching him on the television and grinning from one ear to the other. “It wasn’t the alcoholic Guinness, and he wasn’t drinking and driving or any of that sort of thing,” she went on to clarify, speaking on the RTE Radio 1 show.

The show will air on Prime Video in the UK, US and Ireland from this Friday 21st October at 20.00hrs BST. Seeing the reactions of the people in the crowd: Carrie and Ciaran Clarke, the pub owners; Niall’s mum, hands clasped to her heart, bursting with pride; the talented people Niall and Lewis had encountered along their travels dotted around the crowd; Niall’s Mullingar mates: everyone rapt by the performance. The highlight, for me, came on the last day, observing the production in its final scenes: sitting at the back of Clarke’s pub in Mullingar, sipping a Guinness 0.0 and watching Niall perform ‘This Town’. Niall and Guinness have a lot in common: a shared Irish heritage; shared values and a shared appreciation for the simpler things in life. Niall and Lewis had their own ideas about what they wanted to see and do in Ireland, and we knew from the initial concept that that Guinness could have a credible, authentic role in the story. Our role is to identify fresh new opportunities that drive that legacy forward: telling the brand story in new and innovative ways and creating meaning through deeper engagement with consumers.
