We are not members of a Stalinist party that does not permit debate, discussion and disagreement,” he added. “The chief whip made a statement to the parliamentary party, a matter had arisen and as a result of that matter he [Jack Chambers] wasn’t in a position yesterday to table the motion in accordance with the rules of the party, the chief whip must table and he simply wasn’t in a position yesterday and said to the meeting that he would hope that the issue would be resolved as quickly as possible.” Mr Martin said Mr Chambers was not able to table a motion allowing Mr MacSharry back in due to an issue that had arisen. Mr MacSharry said complaints have been made against other Fianna Fáil representatives which have not resulted in them being suspended from the party and said a “double standard” was being applied to him. In a letter to the party, seen by Independent.ie, Mr MacSharry said he is “deeply upset and offended” Fianna Fáil TDs were informed by Government Chief Jack Chambers that he could not re-join the party because an “issue had arisen”. In his letter, Mr MacSharry said the councillor is entitled to make a complaint about him but insisted he is “entitled to due process and the presumption of innocence”.

MacSharry left the party in September 2021 over Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney's handling of the Katherine Zappone debacle.

We are not members of a Stalinist party that does not permit debate, discussion and disagreement,” he added. The complaint was made on October 13, he said. He just simply wasn’t in a position to table [it]. A matter had arisen and as a result of that matter, he wasn’t in a position to table the motion, which in accordance with the rules of the party, the Chief Whip must table. In July, Mr MacSharry stated that Taoiseach Micheál Martin made a commitment to him that cardiac services would be improved in Sligo University Hospital. He said that he “assumed” that the issue was in relation to the WhatsApp conversation with Sligo councillor on July 19. He suggested that some members of the party assumed he was “being subjected to a criminal investigation”. In a letter to Fianna Fáil headquarters, seen by the Irish Mirror, Mr MacSharry said that he was “deeply upset and offended” that Mr Chambers told the parliamentary party that an “issue had arisen”. He also accused the party of following through on the complaint because he “is not in favour with the party leadership”. Mr MacSharry noted that the Taoiseach had called for “due process” to be given to Tánaiste Leo Varadkar in the wake of the garda investigation when he shared a copy of a GP negotiation contract with a friend. “It is an internal party matter that is being dealt with internally by the party,” he said. While on a trip to Brussels, the Taoiseach was asked if he was concerned that Mr MacSharry’s reputation would be damaged because of the lack of information shared by the party about the complaint.

It is understood Deputy MacSharry got a call at 5.29pm before the scheduled 5.30pm meeting from Government Chief Whip Jack Chambers saying that the proposal was not being put to the meeting as planned. Mr Chambers earlier told RTÉ radio they "weren't in a position to progress the motion at last night's parliamentary party" but it is something they hope can be revisited soon.
