Can Boris Johnson come back as Prime Minister?... (The Sun)

Liz Truss has just resigned as Prime Minister, leaving the UK's political landscape uncertain once again. Some have questioned whether or not the fo.

We've agreed that there will be a leadership election to be completed within the next week." [Boris Johnson](https://www.thesun.co.uk/who/boris-johnson/) resigned as PM on July 7, 2022, kicking off a leadership race in the process. [Jeremy Hunt](https://www.thesun.co.uk/who/jeremy-hunt/), who recently took over as Chancellor of the Exchequer, ruled out a leadership bid. [Ms Truss leaves No 10](https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/20169872/liz-truss-announces-she-will-resign/) with a unique distinction, after just 44 days she is now the shortest serving PM in British political history. If Mr Johnson decides to announce his leadership bid, the only thing in his way would be party support. [Rishi Sunak](https://www.thesun.co.uk/who/rishi-sunak/) to the finishing line, though her tenure ultimately lasted just 44 days, as she confirmed her departure from office on October 20. There is also nothing stopping them from trying again after resigning or losing a vote, with Mr Johnson leaving office due to the former. Unlike Presidents in the USA who can only serve two terms, there are no such limits in the UK, meaning the PM can serve for as long as they continue to get votes.

General Election: We can't let the Tories force another prime minister ... (Metro)

Of course, I want a Labour government, but no matter which political party you support, it is clear the Tories are incapable of governing and the country has ...

The Tories are not on the side of working people. But the game is over for the Tories. Now, after the disastrous budget and Truss’s, they are looking to do the same again. The reality is the Tories showed their true colours when they had unfettered powers. To the Tories, this is just a game but I know people in Brent – and beyond – are just sick of it. But it is not just the most recent events that emphasise the need for an election. Now, the Tories are looking to change their leader yet again without the general public having a say. This lack of warning and distrust in the leadership is why the markets reacted the way they did. Liz Truss had no mandate to make the decisions she did on the economy; they were not manifesto commitments. The most recent PM that was been forced on us, Liz Truss – just in case people think it is Jeremy Hunt – had a favourability rating standing at minus 70. The Government is falling apart in front of our eyes. It is like the Wizard of Oz – once you see behind the curtain, you can’t unsee it.

Boris Johnson, Penny Mordaunt, Rishi Sunak? The MPs who could ... (The Guardian)

As Tories prepare to elect next leader, here are the MPs who have not ruled out running.

[firing politely worded shots](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/oct/04/kwasi-kwarteng-fiscal-plan-date-thrown-into-confusion) at Truss from the sidelines at the Conservative conference, the idea of him becoming prime minister would have seemed ludicrous – and to some colleagues it still does. To Shapps’ advantage, he is seen as a steady ministerial hand, a decent media communicator and an ideological pragmatist. [chose Liz Truss](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/sep/05/liz-truss-wins-tory-leadership-race-to-become-britains-next-pm) to replace Boris Johnson as prime minister, the party’s MPs – and, in some way, the members again – will [select a successor](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/oct/20/liz-truss-to-quit-as-prime-minister) to Truss in an accelerated week-long contest. But Braverman’s brief stint as home secretary is likely to have burnished her credentials with the Tory right. Are enough MPs on her ideological wavelength and willing to take another punt on someone with robust rightwing views? She could be awful. She could be brilliant. However, it remains to be seen if he wants to stand, and if he does, he may be seen as too niche a choice to even be a unity candidate. He came a fairly distant fourth in the 2019 Tory leadership contest and did not even stand in the summer, but he has a long ministerial pedigree, serving on the frontbench for a decade, including stints as chancellor, home secretary and health secretary. Her prospects, however, seem relatively slim. Here are some of the contenders who could stand. He also highlighted his record as a campaigner and organiser to tell nervous Tory MPs “I can help you win your seat”. The education secretary has been a long-time ally of Mr Johnson. He was appointed home secretary in the wake of Ms Braverman’s resignation on Wednesday. Asked if he wanted to be prime minister at that stage, he said: “I want to be the Secretary of State for Defence until I finish. I love the job I do and we have more to do. She thinks it’s very important to treat Parliamentary colleagues courteously.” I want the Prime Minister to be the Prime Minister and I want to do this job.” Speaking before Ms Truss announced her resignation, Mr Double said: “Rishi Sunak’s predictions about the disastrous consequences of Liz Truss’s policies have been proven right. If Liz Truss is no longer PM there can be no coronation of previously failed candidates. MPs must demand return of @BorisJohnson – if not it has to be leadership election or a GE.” In that campaign, Ms Mordaunt said leadership “needs to become a little less about the leader and a lot more about the ship”. He added that he was “willing to get behind anyone who will provide the leadership we need, is up to the job and will get back to delivering on the 2019 manifesto we were elected on”.
