Max Verstappen has kept pole position for the Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix after receiving a reprimand for the incident with Lando Norris in Q3 at Suzuka.

In a marathon Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix, Sergio Perez’s victory was only assured hours after the race due to a stewards investigation. A testing return to the Singapore Grand Prix in tricky conditions created plenty of hazards and mistakes for the Formula 1 drivers to fall into. After seemingly being stuck in limbo at AlphaTauri - too good to let go, but not a realistic prospect for a Red Bull return - Pierre Gasly has finally shaken off the shackles to join Alpine.

Verstappen has yet to secure a win here but the pole comes on the back of a series of strong victories, including from 14th on the grid at Spa and seventh at Monza. The 27-year-old Dutchman is currently the Mercedes reserve driver and won the Formula E championship in 2021. “They both were on out-laps and there is a gentlemen’s agreement between the drivers that when you get to that part of the circuit that you hold position and you file through the last corner one by one,” the Red Bull team principal said. Before qualifying the Alpine team announced they had signed Pierre Gasly from AlphaTauri for 2023 to replace Fernando Alonso, who will be joining Aston Martin. However, when qualifying was over he was insistent Norris had been in the wrong. Michael Schumacher took it in 2002 with six to go, Nigel Mansell in 1992 with five, while Sebastian Vettel won with four remaining also at the Japanese GP in 2011. The Dutchman pushed hard on his final lap but lost a piece of bodywork from the rear of his car and could not improve, yet he had already done enough with his mighty first run. When asked if Verstappen had tried to block him he was unequivocal. “We were all lining up to create a gap to everyone and then somehow he still wanted to get me into the chicane,” he said. The Dutchman had swerved across the track on his out-lap on the short straight before the chicane during his first run in Q3. As Verstappen veered leftward, the British driver had to dive across the grass to avoid hitting him in what would have been a huge accident. Max Verstappen took pole for the Japanese Grand Prix with a superb lap of Suzuka.

Verstappen pips Leclerc to pole in Japan (BBC Sport)

Max Verstappen is in the perfect position to clinch a second world title at the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday by grabbing pole at Suzuka.

"I was really happy with the balance, just slow on the straight. It was Verstappen's first pole for three races and his fifth of the season. The Alpine was upgraded with a new floor in Singapore last weekend. Verstappen almost lost control of his car on the exit of the flat-out 130R while on a slow lap as Norris approached at high speed. "We've had a really draggy car all year. That weakness has truly been exposed here." "These cars really come alive in the first sector. It was an emotional session for Vettel, who is having his last race on a track he loves and where he has won four times, after his decision to retire at the end of the season. We are losing at least 0.6secs on the straights compared to the other guys but through the corners it was still a fun lap to drive." Mercedes suffered for the high drag levels of their car and Hamilton and Russell said they were losing in the region of 0.6-0.8secs on the straights to the front-runners "I lost a part of the [floor] duct in the second lap, which is why I couldn't improve, but the first lap was enough." According to a statement confirming the ruling, Norris accepted it had been an "unfortunate incident" but the stewards noted it was "the driver's responsibility to at all times maintain control of their car" and that all previous such incidents had resulted in a reprimand.

The more I was pushing in the first sector, the more I was going slow in the last sector, losing a little bit the tyres. And it’s one of these trucks that gives you just a lot of pleasure to drive in that limit, and it’s the best thing in Q3. Obviously the forecast is predicting a little bit of rain here and there. MV: Yeah, it was just in the beginning, especially, because our car was very heavily overweight so then you know that once you got really down on fuel, it's just extra painful, I would say. It's a bit of a different thing, but Silverstone I guess is pretty similar on the quali lap. You found a lot of time in Q3, just how good was the car? But at the time, I think it was a good lap. Hopefully, yeah, towards the end of the season this half a tenth falls a bit more to my side and I can get a pole position. Q: Yeah, and of course, speaking to the other two guys, obviously, tomorrow's weather is looking a little bit suspect. MV: Yeah, it was, I think a pretty good lap at the time. It seems we will have a bit of rain somewhere in the race, so yeah, it should be a fun race. Tell us a little bit about the first and maybe the third sector?

If Verstappen wins then Perez’s finishing position is irrelevant, but second place for the championship leader will only be good enough if Perez is outside the top three and doesn’t set the fastest lap (and of course Leclerc fails to score the required points). As he was returning to the pits after his one and only flying lap in the final part of qualifying, Vettel said: "Thank you for the session, I really enjoyed it. The start is Leclerc’s best chance to try and get ahead of his main rival and he starts with the inside line for Turn 1 – but on the dirty side of the grid. However, if Verstappen wins and Leclerc slips to third then the championship will be wrapped up at Suzuka. But the driver starting alongside him on the front row is the one with the best chance of stopping that from happening this weekend. Arigatou gozaimasu Suzuka, I will miss this place.” [HIGHLIGHTS: Watch the action from qualifying at Suzuka as Verstappen pips Leclerc and Sainz to pole](https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article.highlights-watch-the-action-from-qualifying-at-suzuka-as-verstappen-pips.12lZugAbkUHzPeIt13Fqkl.html) The task is a simple one for Verstappen from there. It’s at that stage we also bring Sergio Perez into the equation, as he starts fourth on the grid behind Carlos Sainz. Tsunoda was complaining of a similar problem to Gasly but managed to advance to Q2 and will start from 13th on his Japanese Grand Prix debut, and he’ll be desperate to impress in front of his home fans after we were unable to race at Suzuka for the last two seasons. As Norris rounded 130R to begin a push lap, he encountered a slow-moving Verstappen just after the apex, with the Red Bull darting to the left under acceleration, before being pulled back to the right. The epic circuit was originally conceived as a test track: similar to Pirelli’s own test tracks in Italy and further afield that the Italian firm uses to refine its ultra high performance tyres over a wide range of conditions and surfaces. The fastest strategy on paper is a two-stopper using the soft and medium tyres: probably with the medium used once during the middle stint. The weather and track conditions on Sunday will ultimately decide the way to go. Japanese Grand Prix: Formula One — live (The Guardian)

Lap-by-lap report: Max Verstappen is poised to seal the drivers' championship at the Suzuka Circuit. Join Daniel Gallan for live updates.

I’ve read reports that suggest interest in the sport has waned without a serious title contender, others pointing to the economics, with a few citing covid and the pitfalls of the pandemic as a major factor. But like he said, “To turn the ship in this industry is a little bit like an oil tanker.” He did however guarantee that they’ll be competitive next campaign. To do that, he’ll need to finish with eight points of the championship leader. Whatever happens to him I hope to see him back in the sport. He has been blisteringly quick this year, breezing past his rivals, eating up tracks around the world, laying down a marker as the dominant force in his sport. If their response continues to be shifting blame on Pierre Gasly, it’s a slap in the face to the memory of Bianchi. My guess is the rain won’t let off so intermediates seem to be the way to go. There was a red flag and if he was going too fast then of course he needs to account for himself, but with this visibility (or lack of, as I should say) there shouldn’t be anything on the track that isn’t a safety car or a Formula 1 car. Standing water on the track now so this might be a lengthy delay. “I think it’s preposterous given the conditions, that a recovery vehicle was on track when the FIA was about to abort the race anyway. But still, it’s not a good look when other vehicles are on the track and no doubt the Bianchi incident has playing in his mind. If we get to the end of lap 27, the winner will claim 13 down to 1 for ninth.

Norris and Sainz hit out at Gasly Japanese GP tractor incident (autosport.com)

Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz have hit out after Pierre Gasly had a near miss with a recovery vehicle shortly after the start of the Formula 1 Japanese GP.

F1's Japanese Grand Prix red-flagged after just three laps - The Race (The Race)

The Japanese Grand Prix - which could decide the 2022 Formula 1 world title - has been red-flagged after three laps due to wet conditions.

Verstappen needs to outscore Leclerc by eight points to seal the title today. Gasly then appeared to encounter a recovery vehicle on the racing line under safety car conditions on the lap after his pitstop, prompting an outraged radio message. Rain had eased slightly, but conditions in the paddock remained very poor.

"There will be discussions at the next race [Austin] as to why that recovery vehicle was allowed on track," said the British-Thai racer. As conditions were deteriorating, the Red Flag was shown before Car 10 passed the location of the incident where it had been damaged the previous lap." Philippe Bianchi, the father of Jules, took to social media to vent his anger after seeing the close call. And fans were given a worrying reminded of that tragedy at the race on Sunday, which was red flagged after the first lap. It was at this very circuit eight years ago that his Marussia smashed into a recovery vehicle working at the side of the track, and he sadly died in July the following year, nine months after that crash. Fortunately, Gasly avoided making any contact with the recovery vehicle and made it back to the pits safely.

Leclerc dropped back from Verstappen and Perez began to reel in the Ferrari. when he was told he was champion, reflecting the historical precedent that reduced points are awarded in such circumstances. Leclerc held Perez off to the line, but was deemed to have gained an advantage by going off track and was demoted back behind. The race was marred by a controversy over officials deploying a recovery vehicle on to the track while cars were still running after a crash on the first lap. There was confusion after the race as to whether Verstappen had done enough to tie up the championship, because it was not immediately clear whether full points would be awarded for a race that ran just over half distance. Verstappen headed Sergio Perez in a Red Bull one-two after Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who crossed the line second, was penalised for cutting the track and gaining an advantage on the last lap.

Max Verstappen retains F1 title amid chaos and controversy at ... (The Guardian)

Max Verstappen won the Japanese Grand Prix for Red Bull and secured his second Formula One world championship.

These incidents precipitated a terrifying moment for Pierre Gasly who had pitted on the opening lap and was out of sync with the rest of the field, behind the safety car with a tractor was on track attempting to deal with Sainz’s wreckage. Verstappen was consistently almost a second lap faster and closed out with ease, a fitting finale for the now-double world champion. Verstappen, though, was in complete control, his lap times hugely impressive given the conditions, quickly putting a full 12 seconds on Leclerc who was harried to the flag by Pérez and ultimately made the mistake that was crucial. The race opened in the rain and Verstappen made a slow start but clung on bravely to Leclerc around the outside of turn one to hold the lead as he entered the esses. After this tragedy the FIA introduced a slew of rules intended to prevent such thing happening again, including one which prohibited the use of recovery vehicles unless the safety car or a virtual safety car was deployed. He has become only the third driver to have secured the championship with four or more races remaining – Michael Schumacher took it in 2002 with six to go and Nigel Mansell in 1992 with five, while Sebastian Vettel won with four remaining also at the Japanese GP in 2011.

There is no visibility, so the last thing you expect is to see a vehicle on track. "One thing leads to another and we had a crash with Carlos going off. "I don't think many conversations need to be had, especially from us drivers. I don't know who okayed it and who allowed it to happen. That needs to be improved. "I didn't see Carlos and I didn't see the tractor. It should never happen again, ever in any category." "I only saw it on television, but I was amazed when I saw that because in the car I didn't see anything. "If one driver decides to get a bit out of the racing line or has a small aquaplaning or has to change a switch on the steering wheel and gets a bit out of line and hits a tractor, it's over. "We have an intermediate tyre that is a lot faster than an extreme tyre, but the extreme tyre is the tyre for the condition, but it's so slow you are pressured to go onto the next tyre. I really don't understand how it's happened. "I passed two metres from that crane, and if I was two metres to the left I would have been dead."
