Tottenham travel to Brighton this weekend as Antonio Conte's side look to bounce back from a couple of disappointing results.
They dominated the Reds at Anfield and came away with a well-deserved point thanks to a Leandro Trossard hat-trick. I don't know what Emerson Royal was doing, he's not good enough and his side were embarrassed by their local rivals owing to his red card," former Arsenal star Merson wrote in his "I think Brighton will win this game, I liked what I saw against Liverpool. Antonio Conte's team have suffered from a couple of bad results over the past week, firstly losing the North London Derby to arch rivals Arsenal last Saturday and then drawing 0-0 to Frankfurt in the Champions League midweek. "Richarlison has had a decent start to life at his new club, but with all due respect to him, Spurs look much better with Kulusevski on the pitch and Richarlison coming on to run at tired legs." [ Paul Merson](https://www.football.london/all-about/paul-merson) and [Chris Sutton](https://www.football.london/all-about/chris-sutton) don't think that they'll come away with all three points.

Another man who has been in fine form this season has been Harry Kane – and he has quite the record against Brighton. A staple of Brighton during their time in the Premier League so far has been their defensive rigour. A man to watch out for at the Amex will be Brighton forward Leandro Trossard. No side this season has used fewer players in the Premier League than Brighton (19). It has now been seven home league games for the Seagulls since our 2-0 victory there and they remain unbeaten in that period, winning four and drawing three of those matches. It was a fine night for us last time out at the Amex as we overcame Brighton 2-0 in March.

This is not to be put beyond them as Tottenham, on the other hand, have won just one of their four top-flight fixtures on their travels. Antonio Conte’s side have only won one of their last four games in all competitions, though, and they suffered a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal in the North London derby last weekend; Harry Kane’s penalty levelled the scores in the 31st minute, but the Gunners scored twice more through Gabriel Jesus and Granit Xhaka. Coming into the encounter, Brighton have actually won two of their last three Premier League games against Spurs, including a 1-0 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium back in April, but the North London club recorded a 2-0 win in the corresponding game between the two sides last term.

Tottenham have taken their record and run with it in 2022/23, aided by Emerson Royal’s stupid red card at the Emirates last weekend. That will give them confidence ahead of this match at the Amex, where they’ve won two and drawn one of their three games this season. In their first match under new manager Roberto De Zerbi, the Seagulls were impressive as they got a point at Liverpool last weekend (and probably should have won). Both teams have scored in each of the last six meetings. They usually do so with plenty of goals too, having scored at least three times in each of the last six meetings. They have triumphed in their last seven Bundesliga games against Borussia Dortmund, and eight in all competitions if we include the Super Cup.
Overall, Bissouma has played just 160 minutes in eight appearances, and been handed just one start – away to West Ham United when Bentancur was unavailable.
After all, in the last two seasons he was unquestionably one of the best players outside of the so-called ‘big six’. Conte said last month that he is “struggling a bit with the tactical aspect” and “defensively has to pay more attention”, and the Italian’s insistence on picking Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg instead is obvious proof that he does not believe Bissouma to be ready. Kane pushes Webster aside and takes a shot on, edge of the box. The Brighton captain was obliged to do the same moments later, when Kane sent his partner away to chase a fine through ball. It was a bit of a scrappy goal. His astute chip back to Son bypassed the Brighton defence, the Korean sent in a cross and Kane, stooping, scored his 101st away Premier League goal. I think we have played a fantastic game and the result is not fair, 100 per cent. For Conte, clearly the plan was to sit deep and break at pace. Richarlison was consigned to the bench, while the former Brighton man Yves Bissouma was brought in to stiffen the midfield. The instruction from Conte was evidently to feed early passes through to Son Heung-min and Harry Kane. As a fine tribute to Ventrone’s conditioning work, Spurs were constantly in Brighton faces, giving their profusion of midfielders no time to dwell on the ball. When he was in charge of Sassuolo and Conte at Inter, they met in four Serie A matches.

Doherty should either shoot or roll across for Sessegnon, in acres on his own in the Brighton box, but hesitates, loses control of his feet, and clumsily toe-pokes out for a goal kick. 7 min: Bentancur rolls a pass down the inside-right channel to release Doherty, who has a yard on Estupinan and strides into the penalty area. Then Son loops the free kick over the wall and down towards the bottom left. The ball comes back to him, and he looks for Sessegnon in the middle, only for his dinked cross to be cleared. but Spurs continue to fly, and Kane romps down the right. 17 min: Mac Allister slips a pass down the inside-right channel for Welbeck, who reaches the edge of the box and takes an early shot. It was one where the fitness built up under Ventrone's watch was used to maximum effect as Spurs battled and ran hard to repel Brighton despite this being their third game in seven days. After the first 15 minutes it was only Brighton. To the backdrop of an empty stadium, the players were undertaking their first post-match fitness duties since the passing of their guru. Up the other end, it was Spurs that carried the greater threat with Kane also firing wide from a decent opening and Son's curling effort from range being chalked off because of a slight offside. "I have to be honest, it was really, really difficult for us to be here and to focus on the game because what happened in the last three days was incredible, was incredible. The switch worked well with Tottenham dangerous in attack and assured at the back. Brighton came to the party after falling behind but never truly managed to open up a Spurs defence led impeccably again by Eric Dier and Cristian Romero. We are going with the staff.
