Who's who in the Mushroom Kingdom - Well folks, there it is! We've finally got our first look at the Super Mario Bros. Mov...
Hopefully we'll get a glimpse at some more characters in the month ahead, including the likes of Princess Peach and Donkey Kong. Either way, this little dude clearly has quite a high standing in Bowser's army, introducing the man of the hour after a pretty epic period of set-up. It's clear he's all set up to be a kind of guide for the Mushroom Kingdom, introducing Mario to the citizens, the town, and of course, our beloved Princess Peach. We loved his little magic trick part way through, even if it did result in a bunch of Penguins flying across the ground. It's obviously a nod to his starring role in the Luigi's Mansion series, and we see him here running for dear life away from a bunch of admittedly pretty scary looking Dry Bones! We reckon he's going to be the breakout star of the movie and provide a lot of comic relief when times might seem dire for Mario and Co.
"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is slated to premiere on April 5, 2023, starring Chris Pratt as Mario and Jack Black as Bowser.

[Nintendo has admitted](https://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2011/10/10/mario-s-film-folly-the-true-story-behind-hollywood-s-biggest-gaming-blunder.aspx) to having a hands-off approach to previous movie iterations of its intellectual property. While it’s not that implausible for these two to appear in this film — they frequently appear in Mario spinoff games — the Kongs’ appearance has fans speculating as to Nintendo’s intentions. The trailer follows the release of the movie’s first official poster, which has been heavily scrutinized by fans. The voice cast was unveiled last year by series creator Shigeru Miyamoto in a very matter-of-fact presentation, and internet denizens erupted in laughter and shock as soon as Pratt’s smoldering headshot appeared on screen. The film appears to show Mario’s first arrival to the Mushroom Kingdom, mirroring the “isekai” tradition of Japanese science fiction storytelling, where a stranger from another land magically teleports into another unfamiliar world for adventure. The trailer features Bowser — with an unsurprisingly spirited performance by Jack Black — attacking the nation of penguins, who famously appeared in the level Cool, Cool Mountain in “Super Mario 64.” In a fight that’s over in seconds, Bowser asks who could dare challenge him.

Nintendo just had a special Direct where Shigeru Miyamoto debuted the first trailer for the film and its A-list Hollywood voice cast, including Chris Pratt ...
Given how intimately Miyamoto has tied himself to this project, I feel like we’re not going to have a repeat of the famously disastrous live-action movie decades ago, and this is probably going to destroy the box office when it arrives this upcoming April. This first trailer is not all that long, and features a lot more Bowser voicework than Mario’s (and Jack Black is great, from what it sounds like). But the second line, you can hear more of what I’ll call an “Italian uncle from the Bronx” accent, where he’s how you might imagine a real life, Italian-heritage plumber in the US. We got a little bit from Keegan-Michael Key’s Toad, and a few yelps from Charlie Day’s Luigi as an end teaser. It sounds kind of just like, normal Chris Pratt voice, like he’s leading the LEGO Movie again. Unlike most animated features where it’s common to stack up big names in the credits, given that these are characters we’ve already heard voiced for decades now in some form or another, and some of the biggest icons in gaming, this was…a different animal.

Well there you have it folks. After much speculation we have finally received our first look at the Mario movie, now officially titled The Super Mario Bros.
[Mario Party](games/nintendo-switch/mario_party_superstars) fan-favourite after this - and also a good amount of intrigue about what the movie is actually going to be about - Bowser is after stars to do... Now that you have had time to take it all in, we want to hear what you think! As if there was any doubt, we know that Jack Black is going to be having a huge amount of fun with Bowser and overall it looks like Illumination is doing a decent job of bringing the Mushroom Kingdom to the big screen.

Finally, a confirmation of the title: The Super Mario Bros. In the Mario font and all! [We already knew that](https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2022/09/illumination-website-reverts-super-mario-movie-release-date-back-to-spring-2023), but it's nice to see it in the Mario font, at least. The M on his hat is smaller, his eyes and face are rounder, his moustache is a lot smaller (more realistic, probably), his ears are smaller, his eyes are closer together, his fingers are REALLY LONG, and he's got a little pocket on the front of his dungarees. A red-shirted, denim-dungareed man gets catapulted out of a green pipe to the strains of BEE-BEE-BEE-BOO-BEE-BOO! Well, okay, one thing: In the poster, there were islands and blocks and pipes floating all over the place. The man is surrounded by weird stuff and the first thing he wants to do is touch the one blue mushroom? We'll get to the inhabitants in a minute, because for now, it's time for Kamek! So, okay, we've got a Mario who doesn't know about the Mushroom Kingdom. The trailer released today has provided everyone with a first look at Mario in The Super Mario Bros. There are a lot of ice kingdoms in Mario, but this one isn't immediately familiar to us. A world in which we know what Mario sounds like.

The “Mario” theme song twinkles in the background as he awakens to find Toad. The “Mario” movie was announced in September 2021 with an original December 2022 release date, but the film has since been delayed to April 27, 2023. Toad leads Mario through the valley of gigantic mushrooms, with Princess Peach’s castle looming in the distance. He burns down the icy castle and takes control of a “Mario” star power-up. In a new scene, Mario flies through a green pipe into the Mushroom Kingdom, where he bounces off huge, red mushrooms until he flops on the ground. Bowser’s army of Koopa Troopas, led by Kamek the Magikoopa, face off against the ice kingdom’s legions of blue penguins, seen in the “Mario” games.

From Illumination's rendition of the Mushroom Kingdom through to Jack Black's Bowser, Keegan Michael-Key's Toad, Charlie Day's Luigi and - of course - Chris ...
I'll preface this by saying that I don't care that much for the Mario movie. I'm not sure if he's trying to put on a bit of a New York accent, but whatever it is it's not working for me. This is why I showed the trailer to my wife saying, "Oh man, it looks just like Mario 3." I had pretty much forgotten this film was on the way, so the trailer was kind of a double gift for me. How this all translates into a full movie remains to be seen, of course, but whichever way Mario himself turns out, I'm cautiously optimistic about the whole endeavour. Isn't he just an avatar for the player to "wahoo!" "Oh, this doesn't look so bad," I thought when the trailer first began. Does this mean that this take on Nintendo's games is going to be an origin story for the brothers? I have a lot of questions, and I am looking forward to finding out more in the future. Leading with Jack Black's Bowser was a masterstroke, since a perfect alchemy seems to have been found between the School of Rock star and Mario's nemesis, while the Mushroom Kingdom looks simply incredible (and simply quite edible, really - Mario levels at their best look good enough to eat, as was the case here with what Illumination has done with Nintendo's world). So, Mario doesn't seem to know the Mushroom Kingdom in this film! From Illumination's rendition of the Mushroom Kingdom through to Jack Black's Bowser, Keegan Michael-Key's Toad, Charlie Day's Luigi and - of course - Chris Pratt's not-so-novel take on Mario, there's a lot to unpack.
Chris Pratt may soon show us the power of one of those 'sucked into another world' anime.
While all evidence points to the Super Mario Bros. [One Twitter account](https://twitter.com/IronPineapple_/status/1578116881835229186) posited that since we’re hearing Chris Pratt’s normal Minnesotan accent, that Pratt himself is somehow turned into Mario, a la Jumanji rules, and now we’re following his adventures in the Mushroom Kingdom in the movie. Hopefully Peach isn’t too preoccupied with being kidnapped in the movie and manages to girlboss her way out of another castle to join Mario in kicking Bowser’s ass. on the Nintendo Entertainment System first whisked him away to the Mushroom Kingdom. movie](https://kotaku.com/nintendo-direct-mario-movie-chris-pratt-trailer-accent-1848509515), of course. You’ve got an entourage of evil minions, pun not intended, in Bowser’s legion of Koopas, and a comically evil lair made in his own image. Upon arriving in the new world, which is commonly a fantasy setting, the main character is thrust into becoming a hero who, under the guidance of a trusty crew of allies, i.e., Toad, must cleanse the world from its imposing and evil overseer: enter Jack Bowser. His dope-as-hell villain entrance was chock full of the ingredients that make for an isekai villain. Hollywood films like Space Jam, Back to the Future, and even the 1993 Super Mario Bros. trailer places the film in that genre. The usual structure of an isekai story revolves around its main character, in this case, Mario, being suddenly teleported into a new world. [the first official trailer for the Super Mario Bros.
As for the lack of Italian names in the cast in general, Meledandri said: "Charlie Day, who's playing Luigi, actually comes from Italian heritage. Yeah, so ...
I think we’re going to be just fine." Maybe not entirely – people love to voice opinions, as they should." Yeah, so that's our nod." "Yeah, I can't wait for people to hear it." Comedian Charlie Day plays Mario's iconic brother Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy will portray Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key stars as Toad, Seth Rogen plays Donkey Kong and Jack Black takes on the character of Bowser. But I am once again asking Hollywood why they have this love affair with Chris Pratt when he ultimately brings nothing but a name to his voices. A second person echoed the sentiment, writing: "Dawg, this man didn't even try using a different voice." I can understand not giving Mario a cutesy over-the-top accent but there is NOTHING in Pratt's voice. Just wasn't impressed and I hope these two lines aren't all he's got. [October 6, 2022] A third added: "Everyone else in the trailer is doing a voice but this motherf**ker. Movie has dropped, giving fans a hint at what they can expect from the Italian plumber next year and while the reception has been warm – someone has already come under fire.

Before Thursday's trailer, the scope of the film remained a mystery, and its confounding casting choices (Keegan-Michael Key as Toad?!) kept longtime fans ...
The Mario movie is an isekai, a Japanese genre of storytelling in which the protagonist is magically teleported from their home to another, unfamiliar environment. Princess Peach is the archetype of the damsel in distress. In the movie, will Mario be able to gain new chances at life by collecting coins? The most jarring aspect of the Mario film is hearing Mario speak intelligible, complete sentences. In the case of the Galaxy series, it was tied to Mario’s health. Martinet is still reportedly voicing characters in the film, in what Nintendo has described as a “surprise” role. In the origin story written by Nintendo, and conveyed in “Yoshi’s Island,” we never witness the birth and parentage of Mario and Luigi. Penguins in Mario games have been a recurring presence since 1996′s “Super Mario 64,” where a level named Cool, Cool Mountain introduced us to penguins who love to race by sliding down the mountain. This leads us to further questions about the scope of the Mushroom Kingdom. After 40 years, this remains the biggest question at the roots of the Mario bros’ history. Before Thursday’s trailer, the scope of the film remained a mystery, and its confounding casting choices (Keegan-Michael Key as Toad?!) kept longtime fans wondering: “Just what the heck kind of movie is this going to be?” In “Super Mario Odyssey,” there’s a shadow version of New York City called New Donk City.

Outside of Mario there are countless other Nintendo franchises that could use movies: “The Legend of Zelda,” “Kirby,” “Metroid,” “ Star Fox” and many more. It doesn’t need to be long, but “Super Mario Bros.” could use a flashback to Mario and Luigi’s younger years and see what led them to become adventurous plumbers. “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” is Nintendo’s bestselling game of all time (bar “Wii Sports,” which came bundled with the console), so it would only make sense to rev up some engines in the “Super Mario Bros.” movie. Love them or hate them, water levels are as essential to the “Mario” games as his red hat. When DK does appear, he better throw barrels at Mario at some point, alluding to Mario’s first appearance in the “Donkey Kong” arcade game. Mario’s green companion first appeared in 1990’s “Super Mario World” and has since played a key role in games such as “Super Mario 64,” “Sunshine” and “Galaxy 2.” Of course, Yoshi also hatched his own franchise of quirky video games. We know that “Super Mario Bros.” will feature the obvious Mushroom Kingdom squad — Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser and Toad — alongside Donkey Kong, Cranky Kong, Kamek and Spike. Throughout the “Mario” franchise, Nintendo has introduced some creative companions to assist the mustachioed hero on his journey. The mini villain has been a thorn in Mario’s side in many games, and the combination of him and his much bigger dad could be a formidable threat to the Mushroom Kingdom. The “Mario” video games have countless characters, worlds and power-ups to pull into the movie, so what other Easter Eggs could be hiding in the animated film? Power-ups are vital to every “Mario” game, allowing the plumber to grow, shrink, fly or throw fireballs with the help of some magic items. Since the trailer shows Mario reaching for a mushroom, before Toad scares the life out of him, it’s not hard to imagine the Italian plumber eating some for super-sized strength.
