GARDAÍ in Tralee are responding to a significant public order incident in the Rath Cemetery area of Tralee.

Gardaí remain at the scene of the incident in large numbers and a section of Rath Cemetery has been sealed off for a technical examination by the Kerry Divisional Scenes of Crime Unit. A woman – understood to by the wife of the deceased man - is also reported to have been injured in the course of the incident and is being treated in the emergency Department at University Hospital Kerry for serious but non life threatening injuries . The Kerryman understands that the male, aged in his 40s, suffered serious stab wounds following a confrontation between a number of men in the cemetery.

The victim of the fatal stabbing has been named locally as Thomas Dooley, who was aged in his 40s and from Hazelwood Drive in Killarney. It happened before 12 noon at Rath Cemetery, where a funeral had been taking place.

The scene was preserved pending a full technical examination. “Rath graveyard is the biggest graveyard in Tralee, it’s a place where people go to reflect, it’s where people go to walk, it’s a place where people go to visit a loved one who has passed away. His wife, Siobhan, was also injured in the attack. The Mayor of Tralee, Mikey Sheehy, said there was “shock” at the incident and a “sombre” mood in the town. “Gardaí are aware of who is involved in the feud – in terms of the families and the individuals — but it is a question of whether witnesses to the attack will come forward and speak up.” An incident room has been established at Tralee Garda Station and a senior investigating officer has been appointed to the case.
