And they’re off …Ebaiyra is in the lead on the rail as the field set off … The first of six Group One races on today’s card is the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere, for juvenile colts, which is due off at 1.15pm British time, while the Arc itself is quite early on the card, at 3.05pm. Gamestop, who was third home there but around two-and-a-half lengths behind the winner, is also in today’s field, while Pivotal Trigger, third behind Kubrick in a Group Three last time, lines up for Jessica Harrington. That is bitterly disappointing news for O’Brien and Ryan Moore – he was the stable’s only declared runner – and also robs form students of an early test of the Middle Park form, as The Antarctic was two lengths behind Blackbeard in the Newmarket Group One last weekend. A dozen juvenile fillies are due to go to post for a very open renewal of this Group One, in which five runners are currently priced up between 4-1 and 7-1 by the British books. Berneuil, who took the main trial for this here last month, is alongside in 18, and that could well leave the way clear for Richard Fahey’s The Platinum Queen to make a bee-line for the rail and make the best of her way home under Hollie Doyle. Alipinista is fifth in the early stages … A sprint in which a low draw is generally all but essential, and the lottery has not been kind to last year’s winner, A Case Of You, who was in stall five 12 months ago but is stuck out in stall 19 this time around. And they’re off … The last of the card’s Group One events is arguably the weakest, and it looks like an obvious chance for Kinross, beaten in his first four starts at the highest level including this race 12 months ago, to finally get one on the board. Fang is fast away but Entscheiden has the lead in the early stages … Tenebrism has the lead but Kinross overtakes and kicks clear for a win in the final Group One on the day for Frankie Dettori …

Alpinista won the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe for Sir Mark Prescott and Luke Morris at ParisLongchamp. Recap the action.
The big race is due off at 1505 and Luxembourg is the likely favourite although he is a little weak in the betting at present with some 9/2 available. Aidan O'Brien and his team have handled the Camelot colt superbly since that post-Guineas setback and it was hard not to be impressed by his defeat of Onesto and Vadeni in the Irish Champion Stakes. Onesto's draw in 11 is no problem as it's more or less in midfield, besides which he has tended to be held-up, and should give Stephane Pasquier all the options that he needs. One horse who is proven under conditions is Bubble Gift and it seems that a few punters have latched on to his claims as the appealing 66/1 prices have evaporated with 28s and 33s more commonplace. Bubble Gift was eighth last year, beaten five and a half lengths, so obviously doesn't need to improve a great deal to finish in the first five (or six with Sky Bet, see the tweet above for a direct link) and reward an each-way play. Nashwa was very good under a change of tactics when winning the Nassau at Goodwood and that proven versatility is good news for Doyle and connections as it gives them more options, or faith in those options, to play the cards as they are dealt. Gamestop was third to that pair on his first start since July and it's conceivable that he could improve for that run having blown away the cobwebs. She's got the hang of it now and is well used to it; I'm happy with how she's travelled." She only narrowly beat La Parisienne in the French Oaks so doesn't have bundles in hand but I think she's a backable price at 11/4 to confirm the form. Wed is proving easy to back but Ardent is heading in the other direction as she bids to provide Fabre and Barzalona with a quick double. Westover is currently around 10/1 in a market which appears to have a touch of the Grand Nationals about it with most of the leading contenders tightening up a little bit. "I think every race she has run for the last two years she has improved a little bit so the big question is whether there is anything left.

Vadeni didn’t scream like he wanted to go up in trip and I think looking at the Prix du Jockey Club that AL HAKEEM is interesting. As a horse likely to be dropped out stall four is ideal, and Rouget knows the time of day having landed the prize with Sottsass under Al Hakeem’s jockey Cristian Demuro in 2020. For a start, everything about Al Hakeem suggests the son of Siyouni has been crying out for this distance.

"The last week or so I must have watched 25 Arcs and I've not seen one sit to the furlong pole, so she is extremely special. "It is very much the pinnacle of my career and I can't emphasise enough how grateful I am for Ms Rausing and Sir Mark for giving me this opportunity," he said afterwards. "She has towed me into the race and I was able to sit on her until nearly the furlong pole," he said. He has had some good days in the interim, but is hardly one of Flat racing's marquee riders, and this epic win was just his ninth at the highest level. I think she has improved every single run in the last two years, and she has had to improve each time. That was greeted with the immortal phrase, 'This is suboptimal news!' – which it was – and she didn't come. True to form, heavy rain dumped on Longchamp for ten minutes before the off. Rausing suggested the Breeders' Cup and Japan Cup would be considered for one last hurrah before Alpinista retires to the breeding shed. "I think that the last time we tried with Alborada, I always say that Ms Rausing's hat and coat were on the bed beside her when we rang her to say Alborada had gone lame. She put the race to bed in a matter of strides with an irresistible surge and, while Vadeni and last year's hero Torquator Tasso kept going gallantly to be second and third, they could not lay a glove on the winner. The success also prompted the 74-year-old trainer to suggest it might extend his illustrious tenure a while longer. "It is hard to imagine a better day training."
The strongly backed favourite Alpinista won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, a glorious result for the veteran Newmarket trainer Sir Mark Prescott.
“I’ve trained for Miss Rausing for 36 years, I trained the mother and the grandmother, and Luke’s been with me 11 years. Whether she can go on more, I don’t know, but she’s been faultless for two years, and the jockey’s been faultless for two years. “I always thought that the best day of my racing life was when I rode a winner on my first ride at 15 or 16,” Prescott said. Vadeni, with the soon-to-be-banned Christophe Soumillon in the saddle, and Torquator Tasso, last year’s shock winner, were closing in on Alpinista in the final strides and her eventual winning margin was just half a length. I had a girlfriend and we walked out down the track, and there was an old man banging in divots and he said: ‘What won the first?’ And I said: ‘I did,’ and I thought it was the best moment of my life, but this is every bit as good. At every other step, well-wishers were extending hands, exchanging teary kisses and even stopping Newmarket’s longest-serving trainer for selfies, as they shared the general delight at one of the most popular big-race successes for years.

The five-year-old mare led most of the way and held off stiff competition coming towards the finish.
Rausing dangled the possibility of a further run this year when she said: “She will come back to our stud next year. “Christophe (Soumillon) had a good run through the whole race and thought he was going to win, but the mare found more. I trained her grandmother so it’s hard to think of a better day. It was incredible.” Georges Rimaud, racing manager to Vadeni’s owner, the Aga Khan, said: “We were very pleased with his run and we were obviously beaten by a very good opponent. “All credit to the staff at home I’m just the guy that sits on the horses a few times each year.
