LIVE: Israel v Republic of Ireland, European U21 Championship ... (The42)

Jim Crawford's side are in Tel Aviv for the second leg of this fixture as they aim to reach the finals of the competition for the first time.

Will this be a historic night for the Ireland U21s? Great chance for Ireland as Joe Hodge takes a shot from the edge of the box that just drifts over the bar. Ireland are still coughing up nothing when Israel try to pick the lock, but they need to spend more time in the opposition’s half of the pitch. It’s a good delivery but Joe Redmond gets his head on it to send the ball clear and away from danger. Maher is back up and ready to go again as he takes the kick-out. Another high ball into Connolly, but again he’s outgunned and Israel are in control again. Brilliant hands from Maher to keep out a super shot from Liel Abada after he slipped in behind Eiran Cashin to drill the ball low. Ireland come back down again and Connolly unleashes a really threatening shot in towards the bottom corner. Osher Davida puts Ireland under pressure again with some slick footwork. Another change for Ireland as Tyreik Wright comes on for Lyons. Ireland backs to the wall as Israel find another gear. Slow start to extra-time as Israel play the ball around.

LEE O'CONNOR played his first Ireland game like it was his last - and is out to make sure tonight's Under-21 play-off is not his and his teammates.

“We’ve got a chance to extend the campaign. So we know what needs to be done. But we’ve also had some pretty poor ones so you can’t forget those too. “We’re disappointed to not get more than a draw. I’m happy sitting here with a 1-1 rather than losing 1-0. “But it’s a one-off game.

Ireland U21s miss out on European Championships after shootout ... (SportsJOE.ie)

Ireland U21 missed out on qualifying for the European Championships after losing a playoff shoot-out to Israel and their inspired goalkeeper.

Israel scored their next penalty and the Irish dream was dashed. It certainly was when Peretz saved as Evan Ferguson sent one straight and hard down the middle. Daniel Peretz then turned around and slotted past Maher, and it was advantage to the hosts. The second half of extra time was devoid of clear-cut chances - Redmond and O'Connor great in defence again - and we were off to penalties. Mohammad Kanaan then tried his luck from long-range but Maher was there to smother the shot. With eight minutes to go, sub Finn Azaz and Will Smallbone crafted out a great chance for Andy Lyons but he curled over the bar from 15 yards out.

Heartbreak as Ireland U21s denied history after penalty shootout ... (Extra.ie)

The Republic of Ireland U21s have seen their bid at history end in heartbreak after missing out on the European Championships following a penalty shootout.

Wright was next up but Israel goalkeeper Peretz saved a poor effort easily before stepping up himself and firing past Maher. However Dawson Devoy made it three misses in a row for Ireland when Peretz saved again. Tierney was hauled down by Shahar as he looked to break for Ireland, with the Israel midfielder handed a yellow card. Andy Lyons next had a shot blocked and after working the ball back towards goal the broke down at Connolly's feet. Azaz then forced a brilliant save after more neat play with Smallbone. Ireland goalkeeper Brian Maher picked up a booking after just eight minutes for handling the ball outside the box as he challenged an onrushing Israeli player.

Maher may have been at fault for Gorno’s opener in Tallaght on Friday, but the 21-year-old produced a first-class stop to deny the Israeli forward another goal on the half hour mark, following a sublime through ball by Celtic’s Liel Abada. Maher produced another superb save, but the linesman incorrectly raised his flag and called offside. Shahar skipped past Smallbone and Hodge minutes later and threaded Gloukh through, who’s shot was easily saved by Maher. There was an early scare for Ireland as Brian Maher misjudged an Israeli through ball and left himself no choice but to punch it clear of Gorno outside his box. Israeli trio Doron Leidner, Eden Karzev, and Liel Abada all started, each called down after featuring in the senior sides 2-1 win over Albania last Saturday, a decision Crawford considered “a huge compliment” on his side. In the 28C heat, the hosts enjoyed the majority of the ball in a cagey first half, with the threatening Oscar Gloukh and Shahar keeping Ireland’s defence busy.
