We’ll have to earn the win. They won their group to get here so we have to go and produce a strong performance to win." We’re looking forward to tomorrow night, we’ll make sure we’re ready. We don’t consider one more attacking than the other. We are capable of playing both systems and we don’t like to tell our opposition in advance how we are going to play.” Neither are more attacking or defensive, they are just different ways of playing.

Ireland vs Armenia - Collins' maturity distracts from questions on ... (The Irish Times)

Having made up Jack Grealish following his horror tackle, Wolves defender was outstanding in Hampden Park.

“I said it to Jack after the game. I don’t have a problem in leading a side. Seamie [Coleman] was a good help, Macker (James McClean) was a good help.” What can be guaranteed, regardless of Tuesday’s B Division relegation play-off, is a third seeding for the Euro ‘24 qualification draw in Frankfurt on October 9th. “In a year’s time they will be even better, you can see that and that’s by design. You can see players that are only going to get better, that are on an upward curve in their careers and they will only improve when they get into the European Championship qualifiers from March to November next year. At the current rate of progress, Kenny is building a team to peak at Euro ‘28. “In my book it doesn’t but we need to move the ball quicker than we did in the away game, for sure. “I’m certainly not getting into a debate now on overall where we are,” Kenny sensibly replied, before fuelling said debate. It was a very strong performance. The manager has endeavoured to provide fresher versions of the same message over these past 18 months, but 11 defeats from 27 matches makes it increasingly difficult to emphasise incremental improvement by this young Irish group. Mercifully, Wolverhampton Wanderer Nathan Collins took the focus off Kenny’s record by sounding every inch like a future Ireland captain.

When it comes to the Scotland game, Troy Parrott unfortunately will be most remembered for his costly miss when one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but the Preston loanee did well in general play, with some nice touches and a good work rate off the ball. But the Swansea forward has to be managed carefully given his recent record with injuries and so Kenny may decide to hold him in reserve this time around. Alan Browne is another who could come in if Kenny seeks to freshen things up further, though the exuberance of Knight might be considered a better fit alongside two midfielders who are the wrong side of 30. However, the Irish boss might be tempted to play someone else in what will be a very different type of game. His ability on set pieces against a side that may prove difficult to unlock is another factor working in his favour. Matt Doherty looked tired on occasions during the Scotland game, which is perhaps not a surprise, given that he has yet to start a competitive match for Spurs this season.
