Ireland lose initiative with no room for error to avoid relegation (The42)

There is no time to sulk – Ireland need to deliver a performance and a win against Armenia.

Those opening two defeats to Armenia and Ukraine in June provided an uphill battle that was insurmountable. Then he miss timed a sliding tackle as Aaron Hickey again ventured forward with purpose. But the fight has needed to go on, especially when there is a constant battle to be had for Kenny to show he is moulding a squad that is capable of finding a consistency to their performances. The snakes and ladders nature of the tenure was to be expected given the overhaul required, but Kenny’s judgement in identifying those emerging Irish stars, and his ability in providing the framework for them to thrive, will naturally be up for debate until they come good. And Stephen Kenny can only be left to rue his side being unable to stem the tide of a Scotland onslaught in the second half. That is not what Kenny had in mind considering his stated aim was to try and earn promotion among some of the elite.

Josh Magennis caps late comeback as Northern Ireland break ... (The42)

Ian Baraclough's side trailed 1-0 to Kosovo but Gavin Whyte's equaliser and Magennis' header turned the tables.

Charles had the ball in the net in the 55th minute after Saville played a ball down the middle, but the Bolton striker was denied his first international goal as he was well offside. But there was no McMenamin on the teamsheet, and less than an hour before kick-off the Irish FA announced the 27-year-old, who only made his debut in June, had been sent home after a video emerged appearing to show the Glentoran winger singing a pro-IRA slogan. Ten minutes after substitute Gavin Whyte had given Northern Ireland hope with the equaliser, the Cardiff winger sent in the cross for Magennis to power home a much-needed winner for Northern Ireland and their manager Ian Baraclough.

Ireland player ratings against Scotland: Molumby and Collins impress (The Irish Times)

Parrott and Doherty have nights to forget as Ireland are beaten by the Scots in the Nations League.

In the team to score goals and he will rue the miss that would have put Ireland ahead again in the second half when on one-on-one. Seemed to have been pushed by Egan but an unusual way to jump at the ball in the penalty area. Ran and pressed hard like Molumby but a bit sloppy in possession and went missing for stretches of the game against albeit tough opposition. In the second half he faded a bit as Scotland pressed on for the winner. Put in some good crosses, including a good corner for the goal which eventually led to Egan scoring. At the end of that half he was lucky to avoid a red card after two quick-fire fouls.

White and Magennis strike late to give N Ireland win (RTE.ie)

Josh Magennis headed in the winner in stoppage time as Northern Ireland came from behind to finally end their Nations League hoodoo with a 2-1 victory over ...

Charles had the ball in the net in the 55th minute after Saville played a ball down the middle, but the Bolton striker was denied his first international goal as he was well offside. There was a better chance shortly before the break as Dion Charles – making his first start as he won a 12th cap – broke clear of Fazliji but then placed his shot too close to goalkeeper Ari Muric – the man who keeps Peacock-Farrell on the bench at Burnley. But there was no McMenamin on the teamsheet, and less than an hour before kick-off the Irish FA announced the 27-year-old, who only made his debut in June, had been sent home after a video emerged appearing to show the Glentoran winger singing a pro-IRA slogan.

Ireland 1-2 Scotland recap: Score & result as Christie Pen wins it for ... (Irish Mirror)

John Egan had given Ireland a first half lead, but a header from Jack Hendry and a late Ryan Christie penalty gave the Scots the win. In this clash of Celtic ...

Scotland 1-1 Ireland Ryan Christie rolled it in, condemning Ireland to a third Nations league defeat in five matches. Ireland reacted well and should have been in front when Obafemi slipped Parrott in one-on-one. The Preston striker mistimed his run and was offside from a Dara O'Shea pass.

Scotland v Ireland: Player ratings from Uefa Nations League game (SportsJOE.ie)

The Republic of Ireland played Scotland at Hampden Park on Saturday night in the Uefa Nations League. Here are our player ratings for the Ireland team.

Stephen Kenny picked the right team and his team were excellent in the first half. The Ireland players protested, but Alan Browne clearly handled the ball in the box, and Ryan Christie calmly dispatched the penalty. The Scots held on to win and avenge their 3-0 defeat from June. Obafemi won the ball and broke free before teeing up Parrot. But the home team created very few clear openings on goal and were relying on set-pieces to try to trouble Kenny's team. Gavin Bazunu wasn't required to make a save during the first half. The ball bounced loose but was put back into the danger area by Jayson Molumby, who flew through the air to win a header. Yet, Ireland didn't have to wait long to find the net again. The Republic of Ireland played Scotland in the Uefa Nations League on Saturday night at Hampden Park. Michael Obafemi picked up the ball on the halfway line and ran at Scotland's defence. Troy Parrott, however, came the closest to opening the scoring. Scotland had the better of the opening period at Hampden Park.

Ukraine put top spot in Nations League beyond Ireland (Irish Examiner)

Oleksandr Tymchuk took just 22 minutes to open the scoring, before Oleksandr Zubkov grabbed the second just before the hour mark.

Second is the best Ireland can finish at this stage but that hinges on not just extracting full points from tonight’s game against Scotland and at home to Armenia on Tuesday but rely on Scotland failing to beat Ukraine on the same day. That win leapfrogs Ukraine Scotland into first place on 10 points, beyond the reach of Ireland, who have four points from their four games. Oleksandr Petrakov changed his entire team from the one beaten 3-0 by Scotland on Wednesday, a first in the history of the Ukrainian association, but they possessed the power to blow away the minnows in their backyard.
