The Minister for Justice Helen McEntee has denied the Government ignored a rise in anti-social behaviour in west Dublin.
‘But the reason that I’m here today is to work with the community to try and respond and ensure that there is a criminal justice response, that we have the gardai and the resources to support that the community need to respond to these types of issues. ‘We’ve been speaking to local gardai, who for some months now have been working with the local community, responding to these types of incidents, and trying to put in place the most effective policing response, while at the same time working with the community groups to try and get to the crux and behind what is actually happening,’ Ms McEntee added. Ms McEntee visited the area on Friday to hear about the community’s concerns and met with a number of local representatives.
The Justice Minister says she will never allow anti-social behaviour from a small minority to terrorise any community.
"Communities who need our help will get it. "High visibility policing is central to this and Operation Citizen and other initiatives are key to ensuring that people can enjoy Dublin, whether they live or work in the city – or just want to enjoy all it has to offer. "It is vitally important that people are safe and feel safe in the communities and in our city centres, and Commissioner Harris and I today discussed these issues, along with Minister Browne and Assistant Commissioner Willis.

High-visibility patrols will be stepped up in problem areas, including in the city centre. “There are fantastic people living in this community, working in this community who just want to get on with their lives and support those who need their help.” Speaking on Friday evening in Cherry Orchard, Ms McEntee condemned what happened in Cherry Orchard and said a “comprehensive and coordinated” response will be put in place to tackle this behaviour.
However, she denied these actions are being taken solely because a Garda car was involved in this incident, unlike previous allegations of antisocial behaviour ...
This is the long term plan, the whole focus is community safety in an area dealing with these kind of issues. “They haven’t been ignored,” she said. “I have to again condemn what happened on Monday night,” she said. “We have work in the pipeline to be able to work with the very large online providers we have in this country,” she said. “We’ve been speaking to local gardaí who for some months now have been working with the local community responding to these type of incidents, and trying to put in place the most effective policing response.” “It is utterly unacceptable that this community should have to put up with this type of behaviour, or that members of the Garda Síochána would be treated in this way.”
Helen McEntee unveiled plans to crack down on anti-social problems in Cherry Orchard.
“But beyond that we support the community in making sure that the right type of resources, the right type of supports, and the right type of comprehensive community response is in place. “We’ve been speaking to local gardai, who for some months now have been working with the local community, responding to these types of incidents, and trying to put in place the most effective policing response, while at the same time working with the community groups to try and get to the crux and behind what is actually happening,” Ms McEntee added. “But the reason that I’m here today is to work with the community to try and respond and ensure that there is a criminal justice response, that we have the gardai and the resources to support that the community need to respond to these types of issues.
The Minister for Justice has met community leaders in Cherry Orchard in Dublin following the ramming of a garda car there earlier this week.
The Garda Representative Association (GRA) said this evening it is aware that "in the wake of this appalling incident", extra personnel have been drafted in to help police the area. Mr Cummins said that people in Cherry Orchard felt they had been included in a cycle of development plans without action and that the community has been let down by statutory agencies. He said that local services had always been identifying local needs of young people, but it feels the area is going backwards in time to the 1990s when it wasn't a nice place to live. From a youth perspective, he said it was about supporting the people involved, and understanding that there is a person behind the behaviour, which he said was not always a justice issue. Community workers in Cherry Orchard said they had a good meeting with the minister and felt they had been listened to. The Minister said the ramming of cars should be looked at and that the Garda Commissioner was well aware of the type of resources and training that is needed.

“Communities who need our help will get it. An Garda Síochána are continuing to ensure compliance with bail requirements by repeat offenders. “It is vitally important that people are safe and feel safe in the communities and in our city centres, and Commissioner Harris and I today discussed these issues, along with Minister Browne and Assistant Commissioner Willis. The Ministers, Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner agreed that the most effective way to deal with anti-social behaviour is through supports for communities and young people, such as Youth Diversion Programmes and other services, as led by Minister Browne through the Youth Justice Strategy. The Minister has asked the Commissioner to also review the operation of anti-social behaviour legislation and procedures. The Minister for Justice Helen McEntee and the Minister of State with Law Reform, James Browne, met today in the Department of Justice with Garda Commissioner Drew Harris and Angela Willis, Assistant Commissioner for the Dublin Metropolitan Region.
