He also tells her about his new wifey Rose, asks her to keep Nichole safe, and warns her of commander MacKenzie's power and reach. Serena also encourages Lawrence to find a new wife if he wishes to remain in power, before inviting him to feel the baby kicking in her belly. While surprised and disappointed, Serena pivots as only she can, requesting a "staff, substantial budget, and protection from those that would hurt her and her baby." She informs him she's not returning to Canada, and that she intends to remarry. A suspicious MacKenzie – clearly gunning to replace Fred as the biggest pain in everyone's backside – arrives and asks Tuello to excuse himself. He tells Nick to do right by Rose, as her father is an old friend of the MacKenzie clan. South of the border, Serena continues to be dismayed to learn that Gilead is not a hospitable place for women. Anyway, she gives in and decides to take June to this mystery group “for Hannah,” but Luke, a man, is not permitted to come. She wants to keep owning the libs like she did with the fascist funeral, but her plans to resume her place as First Lady of Human Rights Abuses all end in failure. I do hope this doesn’t take us down a mystical maternal-bond route, which would be fairly antithetical to the project of this whole show. Serena is back in Canada, and her car has stopped on a bridge. According to her: “They’re a bunch of traumatized refugees, and they’re the last people you need to be around right now.” And y’all, I’m officially tired of how Moira has been written for the past season and a half. These involve sewing arsenic into the hems of Martha dresses, enlisting the help of friendly Eyes using a password system, and a complicated way to get in touch with citizens of Gilead involving signals and data. So June learns that Mayday wasn’t something she and the other Handmaids just made up out of a traumatic need, and we get some insight into Mayday’s actual tactics. June and Moira follow Lily to a remote cabin in the woods guarded by women with long guns and suspicious demeanors. What was it?” We call it “purple,” June.) It’s expected to air on Channel 4 in the UK at a tbc date. If anything’s going to lure June back over the border into Gilead, it’ll be the urgent need to save Hannah from a fate like Esther’s. If she’s not able to reintegrate and live as a family with Moira, Luke and Nichole, then Mayday could be a place for her – June Osborne, the surprisingly diminutive rebel fighter who does extraordinary things. He loves her, but is obligated to his new wife Rose, the daughter of a powerful High Commander. Her flirtatious goodbye to Mark Tuello the night before the council meeting showed confidence that Gilead would welcome her back, this time perhaps on the arm of a new and more powerful Commander. Another was Lawrence’s line about Gilead not having the proper infrastructure for “unusual women” to live within its borders.

While that particular exchange isn’t the most important in an hour which also includes June and Serena’s first post-dead-Fred faceoff AND a June/Nick phone call, it certainly made me stop and think about what kind of Mrs.

June is surprised, as she thought she and the others had made it up. This time, she breaks down and pleads with her god not to punish Janine for the mistakes Aunt Lydia has made. Aunt Lydia is at the hospital, where she first goes to see a currently comatose Esther, and her rage briefly takes over. June and Luke are back home, and June is fixated on the color of Hannah’s clothes (purple). Commander MacKenzie knows what happened with Fred, though Lawrence has led them to believe it was the Americans’ doing. Meanwhile in Gilead, Janine and Esther are now hospitalized, and Serena seems to have another card up her sleeve. So, Moira mentions a group of women at the border who can get messages in and out of Gilead.

The Handmaid's Tale explores the terrifying reality for fertile women, known as handmaids, in a world facing humanity's extinction with an infertility crisis.

June and several handmaids distract the guards long enough to allow the children and Marthas to board the plane. In Gilead, June is near death, but her handmaids rally around her and come to her rescue, paving the way for Season 4. As June is pregnant, she is saved from further punishment, but she is forced to watch as the rest of the handmaids each have one of their hands burnt. Her plan is almost foiled as the Eyes become alerted to the missing children and Marthas and attempt to stop them. June is questioned on her role as a handmaid, to which she initially lies before later telling the Ambassador the truth of the horrors she is subjected to. This episode follows June as she is captured and tortured by Aunt Lydia, for allowing the children to escape to Canada and for not disclosing the location of her fellow handmaids. The season 4 finale, The Wilderness, is no different, leaving audiences with many questions and cliffhangers in preparation for season 5. Alma and Brianna also sadly do not make it as they are hit by a train at the crossing, leaving Janine and June as the sole survivors as they make their way to freedom. This episode focuses on the creation of Gilead and Serena's part in this. The Waterfords request that June calls Luke in Canada to request a meeting to see baby Nichole. They were trained and forced to become meek handmaids obeying the will of their male Commanders. The handmaids were torn away from their families and stripped of their autonomy.
