Queen's funeral may break TV records – but it's no cash bonanza for ... (The Guardian)

A total blackout on TV advertising was agreed with Buckingham Palace following the death of the Queen.

“We saw the biggest surge in newspaper sales for a Friday in recent memory, or frankly all memory,” he says, estimating sales rose 25% to 35% on the Friday after the Queen died. According to a senior executive at one newspaper group, national titles enjoyed one of the biggest ever week on week percentage rises in sales that Friday. However, the loss of so much advertising revenue and the The audience aggregator Overnights.tv has estimated that the day of the Queen’s death already tops the charts for total reach, with 33 million viewers tuning into the BBC and major channels carrying news between midday and 2am. ITV has planned its largest-ever outside broadcast, with all of its channels simulcasting ad-free blanket live coverage for the first time in history. And yet the biggest national event in decades will not provide a commercial bonanza for media firms.

Several million people are said to have filed past her coffin during the two weeks she lay in state. Flowers were everywhere in Buenos Aires' streets. The funeral for Princess Diana, who died in a car crash in Paris at the age of 36, was watched by an average of 32.1 million people in the UK in one of the biggest TV audiences. As with all such estimates, large crowds can be hard to accurately size up and are open to exaggerated claims. The funeral for King George VI in February 1952 was the first of a British monarch to be broadcast on television. The public queued for up to 24 hours to see him lying in state and the streets were thronged with hundreds of thousands of his supporters. Kim Il Sung was embalmed and lies in a glass sarcophagus in Pyongyang's Palace of the Sun. A huge portrait of the leader was driven along the procession route and footage shows people young and old crying and wailing hysterically as his coffin, on the roof of a hearse, went by. The 34-year-old's coffin, with one of his helmets on top, rested in a government building and people queued up to seven hours to pay their respects. Around 250,000 people visited his coffin, draped with the Stars and Stripes, as he lay in state for 18 hours in the Rotunda of the US Capitol in Washington. There was a 21-gun salute and flypast, before the casket was lowered into the ground in a private ceremony. A memorial service was held in Johannesburg, with dozens of presidents and prime ministers in attendance, rivalling the turnout for the death of the Pope eight years earlier.
