We discuss the latest leak of GTA 6 gameplay footage, and why early leaks like this are completely and utterly pointless.

Preferably one with some actual gameplay in it, rather than a cinematic, of course, but really, all I want is to see a game revealed as the developers originally intended, and have the chance to get excited about something that actually has substance. Call me a sucker, but I do relish that magician-style showmanship of a grand reveal, which snippets of gameplay footage devoid of any kind of context simply cannot deliver on. But even that has [started to change](https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/gta-6-report-says-its-first-female-protagonist-will-be-part-of-a-bonnie-and-clyde-double-act), with employees recently saying to Bloomberg that Rockstar have cleaned up their act considerably since that big crunch report came out in the run-up to the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2, and that its cultural transformation has also influenced the types of characters we'll allegedly get to play in the next GTA as well - reportedly a Latina woman who's part of a Bonnie & Clyde-style duo, a series first. The leaker gets their five minutes of fame and an influx of new followers, sure.

Big trouble over at Rockstar this morning, as somehow, some way, an enormous amount of early footage from GTA 6 has leaked out, spread across 90 videos ...

It’s easy to imagine that it’s going to be pretty excellent after a lot more work and polishing. In the footage the woman is named Lucia, and the man is named Jason. It’s easy to imagine this will escalate into Rockstar trying to track this hacker down and bring them to legal justice, but we’ll see how successful they’ll be in that pursuit. The footage seems to confirm previous details from older leaks including the location, the Miami-esque Vice City, and the male and female leads.

Changes in company culture at Rockstar are said to have reduced overtime for developers and changed the tone of the game itself, with humor that is less likely to punch down at marginalized groups. For now, though, it seems safe to say that we know where GTA 6 will take place, when it will take place, and who it will star (at least initially). While it’s a little sad to learn that GTA 6 won’t take us back in time (at least for the soundtrack’s sake), it makes sense that Rockstar wouldn’t want to give up the many modern conveniences a more modern time period offers (cell phones, the internet, etc.). Furthermore, it seems that the leaked footage and screenshots represent either a work-in-progress version of GTA 6 or an even older version of the game. Not only do many of the background locations certainly look like Vice City (palm trees, beaches, etc.), but at one point, we actually see a character board a “Vice City Metro” train. Furthermore, I won’t be directly sharing links to the pieces of leaked media in question. That all changed a little earlier today when one of the biggest leaks in video game history seemingly gave the world their first look at an in-progress build of GTA 6.

It's good news for fans of an earlier installment in the "GTA" series who were hoping to be able to explore one of its preexisting settings in a new, advanced environment. The videos, apparently legitimate, seem to line up with previous reports and leaks regarding the content of "GTA 6." Did the hacker behind the Uber hack just breach Rockstar Games' servers and leak Grand Theft Auto 6 development videos?

As well as making claims to be the same 'Tea Pot' hacker who was behind the Uber incident, the threat actor says they had gained access to both GTA 5 and GTA 6 source code along with other assets. That Slack server access was involved, and the very public, boastful nature of the video postings certainly suggest a similar modus operandi, however. As evidence of this, videos of Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6, which is still in the early stages of development, have been leaked and published online.

A hacker has got hold of almost a 100 videos and screenshots of GTA 6, as Rockstar Games desperately tries to remove them from the internet.

The source of those rumours also currently believes the video leaks are real. For the people making GTA 6, it'll be a big blow, not least of which because it damages the image of the studio and the game before it's even official. Grand Theft Auto 6 appears to have suffered a massive leak this morning with images and development footage apparently appearing online. While it is not.

The character names may also be shown in this clip with the lady called Lucia while the guy seems to be called Jason, who appear to be the main characters for GTA 6. If this is all real then Rockstar will have to deal with this major data and security leak. Other videos and screenshots do have views of other brands from the GTA Universe as well. Most of the characters are not fully modelled, lacking detail in their faces, which could make this more legitimate of this being a development build of GTA 6 – it’s also worth noting that there are always a lot of placeholder elements when games are so deep in development and far away from release. The script even mentions GTA V character Jay Norris – the CEO and founder of the app LifeInvader. While it is not verified this is all confirmed footage, there is a lot of detail from environment design, voice acting, and debug screens that show parts of Vice City, the surrounding area, and two player characters.

But what problem I’m not sure Rockstar has to contend with in the wake of this is that public perception of GTA 6 has dropped because of the early leaked footage. So yes, this leak is hugely damaging to GTA 6 development given everything that came out and a hacker who at least claims to have the source code of the game itself. But I do wonder if they’ll now release some official news and looks at the game they can control, given that everyone’s interest is now piqued. A segment where Lucia robs a diner had some interesting, very detailed NPC AI as they react to the robbery, and it all just looks…very good, especially for being what, potentially three years away from release? It’s not good for development of the game. But what the leaks showed was something perhaps a bit surprising.

Teapotuberhacker impersonators, along with continued DMCA takedowns, have continued in the wake of the Grand Theft Auto hack.

[Tea Pot’s account was deleted](https://twitter.com/_Tom_Henderson_/status/1571621749950668802) from even the Wild West of messaging apps, Telegram. Tea Pot confirmed this, posting to GTAForums to complain that his original thread had been taken down, saying, “My thread grew to be one of the most popular in the forums history. Some were [ sharing their Bitcoin wallet](https://twitter.com/teapotuberr), but [everyone seemed to be asking for an offer](https://twitter.com/teapothack/status/1571609801557172226?s=46&t=CtuXbwj3k4VoWfmxPPBtXw). The impersonations have been somewhat successful because the original Teapot was apparently trying to get in touch with Rockstar or Take-Two to “negotiate a deal,” At the same time, the source code for GTA V appears to be being offered for sale, while the origin of the leak is playing whack-a-mole against himself.
