Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell News: Interviewing Nate Eaton (Deseret News)

Nate Eaton, news director at East Idaho News, was one of the first reporters on the case involving Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell. Here's his story.

When asked what it felt like in Rexburg the day and the week the children’s remains were found, Eaton said it was one of the heaviest weeks the town has experienced. His coverage for [East Idaho News](https://www.eastidahonews.com/news/daybell/) has become arguably the most widely cited news coverage of the case. Before the children’s remains were found and Daybell was arrested, the town exploded with Chad Daybell sightings. They arrived at the scene and Vallow and Daybell were there. The police served two warrants and seized Vallow and Daybell’s vehicle. “Chad was not in custody, and you’ve got these deaths that had happened, but you didn’t know who else were their followers. Vallow and Daybell refused to answer any of Eaton’s questions. Later that day, the investigator called Eaton again and said, “Things have sped up, we need to move on.” While on the call, Eaton said he looked up and saw two police cars and an SUV. While Eaton was at a recital for his daughter, an intern who worked for East Idaho News discovered that both Vallow and Daybell’s former spouses had died in the past year. Shortly after Christmas, an anonymous tipster with a fake Facebook profile sent East Idaho News GPS coordinates of the location of Vallow and Daybell. On Sunday, Eaton coordinated with an investigator who said that nothing was going to happen that day. The statement indicated that the parents were not cooperating.

FREMONT COUNTY, Idaho (KIFI) - Lori Vallow-Daybell appeared before Judge Steven W. Boyce Thursday morning. You can watch the motion hearing below.

Lori Vallow-Daybell’s former husband, who died while the two were estranged, said in divorce documents that Vallow-Daybell believed she was a god-like figure responsible for ushering in the apocalyptical end times. The attorneys, Jim Archibald and John Thomas, claimed the cameras and microphones could potentially be used to overhear private conversations or to view private notes on the defense table. The Associated Press was among the nearly three dozen news organizations that joined in the request. Late last month, attorneys for Vallow-Daybell asked the judge to ban cameras from the courtroom, contending one news organization abused the privilege to videotape the proceedings when it repeatedly zoomed in on Vallow-Daybell's face during an Aug. The couple is accused of conspiring together to kill Lori Vallow-Daybell's two children, 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow and 17-year-old Tylee Ryan, as well as Chad Daybell's late wife Tammy Daybell. “You've named off 35 major media organizations, which tells me that there is huge interest in putting all the information out to as many people as possible,” 7th District Judge Steven Boyce said Thursday.
