Bledisloe Cup 2022: Wallabies v All Blacks – Rugby Championship ... (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: Australia take on arch-rivals New Zealand in the first Bledisloe of the year, which doubles as a crucial Rugby Championship match.

Foley hasn’t played for the Wallabies since 2019 and hasn’t played at all since May. Headline is Foley at 10, on a rugby field for the first time since May and wearing the green and gold for the first since 2019. The Wallabies versus the All Blacks. “The breakdowns are always important but often the result of a breakdown is how well the team is playing on top, in terms of getting over the gain line with carries. The ball is turned over but there’s a penalty right in front of the posts. The Wallabies return the favour but the All Blacks canter up field through a busting run from Clarke. That pen came off the back of relentless pressure on the floor and in the collision. The AB’s try to pull it down and Papali’i (on the pitch while Cane is seen to after a head knock) is yellow carded, but not before Valetini mops up and busts over the line from close range. A clean line-out is morphed into a maul that splinters and charges towards the line. He then pops the ball up with his bum on the floor and Foley dinks a kick into the All Black's’ 22m. But there’s no denying the tide has turned and everything is going the way of the Wallabies. A Wallaby line-out on the right is well worked with Valetini collecting in the air and dropping it for Samu on the run down the blindside.

Australia vs New Zealand LIVE: Rugby Championship latest score ... (The Independent)

A crucial Bledisloe Cup match at Marvel Stadium sees the All Blacks and Wallabies square off.

He is cut down and forced to hold on - New Zealand kick for touch. New Zealand’s maul leaves the station at speed and there is plenty of coal in the engine, Jake Gordon unintentionally knocking it off the tracks as he is rather buffeted backward by it. Jordan falls awkwardly over Marika Koroibete - a penalty coming, but New Zealand might just make the most of the advantage... The conversion extends New Zealand’s advantage. With three playmakers on the pitch there are options aplenty for the New Zealand attack. Mathieu Raynal penalises the New Zealand prop, but decides there is no more sanction needed with Lomax just about managing to ensure Fainga’a came down on his back. A third yellow for Australia! The All Blacks look to be making a mess of clearing their lines but switch into attacking mode in an instant, Jordie Barrett spotting Caleb Clarke all alone with chalk on his heels on the left. A much-needed Australia try! Beauden Barrett steps up into the line with Will Jordan in the sidecar, the replacement lifting a dainty little chip for Jordan to rush on to and take. The lineout goes awry! Australia will be back to 15 in about a minute.

Australia v New Zealand live: Score and latest updates from the ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

Like much of this year's Rugby Championship, at times it hasn't been that pretty, but it has been captivating and chaotic.

After heavy wins for New Zealand and South Africa in the last round - against Argentina and Australia respectively - the All Blacks sit atop the standings by a point. Yes, it has not been a vintage tournament in terms of standard, but what a turnaround that would be for Ian Foster and his coaching team, who were on the verge of sackings a month ago. Detailed team news will follow, but one selection that caught the eye was that of Bernard Foley at fly-half for Australia. After a weekend off, the Rugby Championship comes back with a bang. Australia fought back to all square on the scoreboard but then lost two players to the bin at the end of the half. Foley spills a bomb and the All Blacks ignite an attack. Penalty New Zealand at the scrum. Other than Ardie Savea - whom Sotutu replaces today due to paternity leave - New Zealand can lack explosiveness in the ball-carry. Imagine a back row of Frizzell (when fit), Savea at openside and Sotutu at No 8. There are too many Premiership matches on a Saturday afternoon, which means that no amateur or semi-pro player can go and watch their local professional team in person. The All Blacks attack from inside their own half and Ioane finds a half-gap and explodes through it. The depleted Wallabies try to scramble across but there are too many numbers out wide.

It comes despite the fact the Wallabies will slip to ninth on the World Rugby rankings should they lose their Bledisloe opener, with Rennie holding a 40.7 winning percentage (11/27, three draws).. Pressed on whether his threat of pulling out of Super Rugby Pacific was real, McLennan doubled down and added that the Wallabies’ failure to win the Bledisloe Cup over the past two decades could suggest that tying itself to New Zealand was possibly not the best thing in any case. A 10-year deal is on the table and while it may not be a 50-50 financial split to begin with, should both parties agree it will head that way in due time as RA gets their ducks in a row. [The Wallabies can beat the All Blacks... “So a lot of that will be funded out of the World Cup.” “We’re looking at setting up an endowment fund to fund rugby in the future when I’m dead and gone of well over $100 million, so that we don’t go through what we went through in 2020 through COVID. Key to driving the game forward will be hosting the Lions (2025) and the men’s (2027) and women’s (2029) World Cups. “There’s an argument that says we should be serving the major home unions, where there’s a lot of history, like Queensland and New South Wales, but then what’s to say we couldn’t host it to 60,000 people in WA or potentially 100,000 in Melbourne,” McLennan said. As Dave Rennie received the full backing through to next year’s World Cup despite the Wallabies slumping to an all-time low on the World Rugby rankings, Rugby Australia chairman Hamish McLennan said he was still prepared to sever ties with New Zealand Rugby if an equitable deal could not be reached.

Welshman Ben Whitehouse was TMO for the game and pointed out that Swain had targeted the left leg of Tupaea. Shocking and a red card all day long." He then posted the video clip of the incident, adding: "Here’s the woeful clearout from Darcy Swain targeting the knee/lower leg of Quinn Tupaea. Former England man Andy Goode wrote: "Great call from Ben Whitehouse the TMO on calling out the clear out by Darcy Swain targeting the leg/knee of Quinn Tupaea who’s now hobbled off injured. Wallabies lock Darcy Swain was sin binned in the Bledisloe Cup on Thursday after a clearout on Quinn Tupaea which appeared as if he targeted the left leg of the All Black. Replacement Tupaea was jackling at a ruck when Australian second-row Swain flew in with a clearout, and appeared to make heavy contact with the left leg of the Kiwi centre.

Darcy Swain condemned for 'shocking' incident during Australia v ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

Swain was slammed for 'deliberately targeting' Quinn Tupaea's leg in Australia's defeat in the Bledisloe Cup.

No update on Tupaea's condition was immediately available after the incident. Swain promptly left the field with little protest, reducing the Wallabies to 13 players given Tom Wright was also in the bin. Swain and Tupaea had only just arrived on the field, replacing Rob Leota and Beauden Barrett respectively.

The 'ridiculous' refereeing call that shocked TV commentators ... (WalesOnline)

The epic Melbourne clash ended in truly crazy fashion, with Jordie Barrett scoring a last second try after a huge call made by French referee Mathieu Raynal ...

We really wanted to put in a performance but we just fell short. Australia captain James Slipper, who had been replaced by the time of the last minute controversy, said: "It's hard to see from the bench [what happened with Foley] but we were confident. Raynal reversed the penalty and awarded New Zealand a scrum instead near the posts. New Zealand were able to retain the Bledisloe Cup, and also relieve pressure on their under fire coach Ian Foster. Amidst the confusing scenes and anger, the referee called White over, ushered other angry Wallaby players away, and explained he had told Foley to get on with the action. Cue even more drama as stoic Wallabies defence held out from the resulting driving maul and they were awarded a penalty themselves for Blacks hooker Dane Coles not releasing.

All Blacks snatch dramatic victory in Melbourne after Wallaby ten Foley pinged for taking too long on a clearing penalty.

A White penalty from 50 metres pushed the hosts ahead for the first time of the night but that controversial decision by Raynal gave the All Blacks position five metres out to post their 20th successive Bledisloe Cup success. “So there was no real urgency to do that and I don’t know - it just shows a little bit of a lack of feel for such an important moment in the game.” Foley added: “We were still listening for the line out call. “I was just talking to Bernard Foley and what we knew was the time was out and he told the boys to play but the clock was stopped,” coach Dave Rennie told Stan Sport.

Controversy reigns as All Blacks dash Wallabies' Bledisloe Cup ... (The Guardian)

Australia had one hand on the trophy until a last-minute refereeing decision turned a 37-34 victory into a 39-37 defeat.

As the siren went, Australia scrambled again and again but the All Blacks found space and went over in the corner. The All Blacks took the scrum. But the All Blacks came again, won a penalty. The All Blacks blinked first though, Valetini stealing it on the halfway. Although Foley landed a penalty for 17-13, the All Blacks raised the tempo and dared the home side to go with them. A kick-through set up a siege in the corner but after 14 steady phases the All Blacks spoiled and the chance went. It shook the All Blacks. With it went the momentum. His side were in the ascendency and he wanted the points to prove it. They were even on the scoreboard and winning the clinches and the All Blacks bench was busy with lots of soldiers suffering concussions, captain Sam Cane included. Australia won a penalty, pulled it back to 10-3, then ran into the red zone from a free-kick. Australia finally got the ball and inched forward, reeling from ruck to ruck with little progress.

Rugby Championship: Five takeaways from Australia v New ... (planetrugby.com)

Following a 39-37 victory for New Zealand over Australia in their Rugby Championship clash, here's our five takeaways from the match in Melbourne.

Like Australia, losing a traditional openside after Sam Cane limped off gave their opposition a lot of room to run into in the 10/12 channel, and with Cane around, they may well have plugged a lot of the holes that appeared in their first phase defence. Australia decided to go in without a real recognised openside, playing Pete Samu as a 6.5, and that gave the classy Kiwi pivot a nano-second of time on the ball to create intelligent mayhem in midfield. On the plus side, the performances of their back-row, despite unusually not playing an out and out fetcher, will delight them. Rob Valetini put in a massive shift, hitting breakdown after breakdown, jackal after jackal and steal after steal – in short, he was exceptional. This was one of the most ‘All Black’ like displays we’ve seen from New Zealand in a long time. It destroyed the result of the match and was a decision based on emotion and lack of rugby empathy over any form of legality or reason. Despite the walking wounded, Australia have a lot to be proud of. His opposite number Foley also had a memorable game, even if the final memory will be one of frustration. In short, it was an atrocious performance from Raynal that had a huge impact on an otherwise fantastic match. Caleb Clarke’s subsequent run then causes the ruck where Tom Wright and Darcy Swain are both carded, with Swain lucky not to see red for his lower limb hit. But we mustn’t let the officiating overshadow the amazing commitment of both teams – massive gainline hits, power running, incredible competition at breakdown, set-piece and in the air. Bluntly, Raynal failed every definition of this view as his interpretation of ruck laws, scrummaging and illegal play was quite shocking at times.

'Gutted' Rennie to demand 'please explain' over mind-boggling ... (Fox Sports)

'Gutted' Rennie to demand 'please explain' over mind-boggling Bledisloe scene.

Most situations the clock is off and the clock stays off, so it sounds like the clock went off and then he started it again.” (It was) just a real lack of feel for the situation,” Rennie said. “I spoke to Bernard after the game. So to lose it, in that fashion, massively disappointing.” it lacks a bit of feel for such an important moment in the game and you would have thought kick it out and play out the last couple of minutes.” Rennie said he felt “gutted” for his side and expressed disappointment that the decision marred what was a thrilling Test. The referee had told him to play and at no stage was he told or did he believe he was going to call a scrum from that. New to Kayo? Every Game Live & exclusive to beIN SPORTS on Kayo. “I think you’ve got to have a feel, a feel for the game and the situation. So if you feel a team’s wasting time, then stop the clock, then they kick it out, and then you play the game and the teams decide it. Rennie said after the match that he hadn’t “seen a decision like that at any level.
