Revenue tax defaulters: Motor dealer tops list with €10m settlement (Independent.ie)

A motor dealer in Co Carlow has topped the latest list of tax defaulters after being hit with settlements of more than €10m by the Revenue.

Revenue said the published settlements reflect only a portion of all audits and investigations. Sean Doughan of Moneygall, Birr made a settlement of €210,362 including €62,770 in tax, €104,795 in interest and €42,797 in penalties. The second settlement was made up of €2.2m in taxes, €1.3m in taxes and €2.2m in penalties.

Terri O'Hanlon and William O'Sullivan, both of Keltoi Lodge, Kit Ahern Road, Ballybunion were fined €2,500 each for obstruction of a Revenue officer.

The latest Revenue Tax Defaulters list show that Meridian Motors 2014 Limited, based at Sleaty Road in Carlow - which is now in liquidation - owes Revenue € ...

In total, 12 cases with a total of €12.5m are listed on today's Tax Defaulters list. Meanwhile, Meridian Motors Limited, which traded as Carlow Motor Company and was also based at Sleaty Road, owes Revenue €5,848,934. The latest Revenue Tax Defaulters list show that Meridian Motors 2014 Limited, based at Sleaty Road in Carlow - which is now in liquidation - owes Revenue €4,884,961.

In a statement, Revenue said the published settlements reflect only a portion of all their audits and investigations. MTIS Ltd, an insurance brokerage and consultancy firm at Unit 301, Omni Park Shopping Centre, Swords Road, Dublin 9 had the third largest settlement in a Revenue audit case for the under-declaration of VAT. The settlement was made up of €1.9m in taxes, €1m in interest and €1.9m in penalties. The Revenue listed a second case against Meridian Motors Limited of the same address for a similar audit. Meridian Motors 2014 Ltd, which is now in liquidation, of Sleaty Road, Carlow was the subject of a Revenue audit case for the under-declaration of PAYE/PRSI/USC and VAT. The settlement of €298,236 was made up of €182,517 in tax €60,964 in interest and €54,755 in penalties.

A farmer and a retired builder from Offaly have been included on the latest tax defaulters list, which was published by Revenue this week.

Mr Mooney's case involved a revenue audit which found an under-declaration of VAT. Mr Doughan's case involved an investigation by Revenue of non-declaration of income tax. According to the Revenue list, Mr Doughan's settlement has been fully paid, while €166,655 of Mr Mooney's settlement was unpaid as of June 30, 2022.

3 Crane Lane, Dublin 2, for the non-declaration of Capital Gains Tax in the amount of €6,033 (incl. €10,721,226 was the amount unpaid from all Revenue settlements for this period as of June 30, 2022. Sean Doughan, Monegall, Birr, Co Offaly, was found to have under-declared Income Tax and was hit with a bill of €62,770 in tax (including a €5,706 surcharge), €104,795 in interest and €42,797 in penalties. An Offaly farmer, John Mooney, with an address at Kilmaine, Fortal, Birr reached a settlement of €169,955 with Revenue when an audit found he under-declared VAT. Revenue has this week published its tax defaulters covering the period from April 1 to June 30, 2022. These dealerships appeared on Part 2 of Revenue's latest tax defaulters list.
