Liverpool reinvigorated as Jurgen Klopp restores principles to grind ... (The Independent)

The Reds were 'compact' at Anfield to stifle the Dutch visitors and bounce back after a damaging defeat in Naples.

A show of character, he thought, was “the most important thing.” It was a sentiment he could have voiced at any time in the last seven years. “When you have a problem and you want to sort it immediately, put a bigger shift in,” Klopp said. “He combines the qualities of Bobby and Darwin,” he rationalised before kick-off. Liverpool missed Jordan Henderson, who provided defensive ballast when the right-sided trio consisted of him, Mohamed Salah and Alexander-Arnold. Yet his most accurate description may be one of the simplest: he once called Firmino a “connector.” While he sat on the bench, Jota connected midfield with attack, Diaz with Salah. Klopp has found a variety of ways of praising Firmino over the years; at his most effusive, he has said that “people will write books” about the Brazilian. If there are a host of reasons for Liverpool’s problems in their troubled start to the season, one is a simple matter of personnel: remove too many of the premier people – and after his stellar season last year, Matip felt desperately unlucky not to start Klopp had a three-way choice, between the past and the future, the ageing talisman Roberto Firmino and the summer signing Darwin Nunez. [Richard Jolly](/author/richard-jolly) Comments [Liverpool ](/topic/liverpool-fc)had needed to reinvent themselves, [Jurgen Klopp](/topic/jurgen-klopp) said, and they did. The middle was different. The start was different. Klopp had greater things on his mind in the bowels of the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona and amidst the despair of his worst defeat than the precise choice of words in his second language, but if the definition of reinvention brought debate, the Liverpool manager’s version was less revolutionary than retro.

[Joel Matip]was very good, on and off the ball. The ex-Spurs man missed his effort, only to see it fall to Kudus. How can it be when he is only fleetingly on the pitch?” “You can’t keep the world’s best players down for long. “This is not making a snap judgment or suggesting that Liverpool have bought a dud in Nunez. But as long as Ajax were on course to take a point, there was a case for arguing the result could be still more damaging than their statutory setback in Naples…until Matip met On a day when they had 23 shots, they eventually mustered a second goal to ensure shortcomings in either box did not cost them. “First and foremost, the return of The So did Liverpool, albeit imperfectly. “In their energy and their organisation, in the individuals and the collective, they had improvement. “After the worst display of his reign and the nightmare in Naples, Liverpool required a response and a win.

He also headed in the winning goal of the game in the 89th minute. Thiago was at the heart of everything positive on the night, and Liverpool will need him to stay fit if they want to do well this season. Kostas Tsimikas delivers for Liverpool with 5 key passes as 2 tackles ... (Rousing the Kop)

Liverpool ended up with a very positive night as they beat Ajax in the Champions League at Anfield. This was a game the Reds pretty much had to win, after all.

The best XI isn’t performing correctly and Tsimikas is putting serious pressure on Robertson as a result. That’s only a good thing, of course. The 4-1 defeat to Napoli was a terrible one and it also put their Champions League hopes in jeopardy. He was defensively solid and at one point made a vital last-man recovery to keep Ajax out. Ajax as a team, in fact, only managed two. Tsimikas also won both of his defensive duels here, as well as intercepting one pass.
