Here are the best looks as stars from The White Lotus to Succession hit the red carpet at the 74th annual Emmy awards in Los Angeles.
The 2022 Emmys handed out awards to Succession, Squid Game, Abbott Elementary, The White Lotus, Ted Lasso, Lizzo's Here's To The Big Grrrls and others.
Jean Smart won for Hacks for lead actress in a comedy series for the second year in a row. It's more an observation of public reaction than of the show itself, but standards seem to have changed for when a show has won "too much." Even a second or third win can seem rote by now, so bring on the new contenders, and we'll be glad to see them. Zendaya, who won the award for outstanding lead actress in a drama series for Euphoria two years ago, won again. Even the great Jean Smart, beloved by so many over such a tremendous career and absolutely marvelous on Hacks, might not have been the first choice of many people. The Emmys are starting to have an enviable problem: Even when people disagree with the outcome of a contest, it might be less that a show is undeserving and more that there's simply something else that deserves a shot in a stacked category. Lee Jung-jae won lead actor in a drama series for Squid Game, the first Asian man to ever be so honored. Amanda Seyfried took lead actress for The Dropout and Michael Keaton won for lead actor in Dopesick. Plus, Ted Lasso actors Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein won again in the lead and supporting categories. Perhaps the nicest surprise was Lizzo's Watch Out For The Big Grrrls, which broke RuPaul's Drag Race streak of four wins in the reality competition category. But there were also great speeches and encouraging wins, and we're here to look at five takeaways from the ceremony as a whole. At the same time winners fought for spare seconds, dull montages that were little more than "here are some TV shows" were allowed to linger, as were scripted bits that seemed less satisfying than the cut-off speeches, even when those sketches were performed by able comedians like host Kenan Thompson and the very funny Bowen Yang.
From the glorious Sheryl Lee Ralph to the awkward "Brady Bunch" break dancing, here is the best, and the worst, of the 2022 Emmy Awards.
[Ralph won the award](https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/tv/2022/09/12/sheryl-lee-ralph-accepts-first-emmy-abbott-elementary-emotion/10362737002/) for best supporting actress in a comedy series and was visibly shocked and shaken by the honor, her first Emmy. [red carpet](https://www.usatoday.com/picture-gallery/entertainment/tv/2022/09/12/emmys-red-carpet-2022-best-photos/10359590002/) is rolled up, the gold statues have been given away and the speeches have been given. On a night when several speeches from winners were cut off, it was extra frustrating to see so many unfunny comedy bits and montages shoved into the long broadcast. [death of Queen Elizabeth II](https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/celebrities/2022/09/08/queen-elizabeth-ii-dies-britain-longest-reigning-monarch/6353505001/) and succession of her son, [King Charles III.](https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/celebrities/2022/09/08/queen-elizabeth-death-reactions-king-charles-royal-family-world-leaders/8024257001/) He did note that more people voted for "Succession" in the democratic Emmys than in [the monarchy with Charles](https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/health-wellness/2022/09/12/queen-elizabeth-ii-ties-colonialism-make-grief-complicated-legacy/8032585001/). Just when she started to give thanks, the producers tried to play her off. [Everything you missed](https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/tv/2022/09/12/emmys-2022-live-updates-winners/10359429002/) "I'm glad I've made a fool of myself over and over again." It was weird, it was dull, and it was so unnecessary. And there were some really wonderful moments Monday night, and some genuinely terrible ones.

Pop singer Lizzo underscored the importance of representation in an emotional Emmys speech.
As with last year, the Emmys packed in over 25 awards around occasional bits from Thompson (as well as announcer Sam Jay), and a special Governor’s Award to the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, which has worked to increase representation for women in front of an behind the camera. Squid Game, the first non-English language series ever nominated for best drama, kept Succession from taking a full sweep with wins for director Hwang Dong-hyuk and star Lee Jung-jae, the first person to win an acting award for a non-English language performance. Ralph, a 40-plus year veteran of the screen and first-time winner, took advantage of the Emmys’ pre-submitted thank yous that ticked on-screen below acceptance speeches and provided arguably the emotional highlight of the evening with a rendition of Endangered Species by Dianne Reeves. HBO’s limited series [The White Lotus](https://www.irishtimes.com/culture/tv-radio-web/white-lotus-the-couch-potato-equivalent-of-a-rainy-staycation-1.4649273), tied with Ted Lasso for second with 20 nominations apiece, swept all the awards for which it was nominated (the ensemble series about privilege and perversion at Hawaiian resort submitted all its performers to the supporting categories). “To anyone who has loved a Rue, or feels like a Rue, I want you to know that I’m so grateful for your stories, and I carry them with me, and I carry them with her,” she said. The bit-packed show, hosted by Saturday Night Live veteran Kenan Thompson, included several back-to-back wins — Hacks’s Jean Smart for comedy actress, Ted Lasso’s Jason Sudeikis for comedy actor and co-star Brett Goldstein as supporting — as well as repeat nods from previous years.
There were few surprises – and a few standout speeches – for a telecast that handed out trophies mostly to repeat winners and clear favourites.

Her win was entirely deserved, especially if it means that more people will watch The Dropout. What a stunning performance that was; it was as if Seyfried managed to physically alter her entire DNA a few episodes in. But I was wrong, and this was a victory for the ages. And nothing is safer than Ted Lasso, the comedy equivalent of rice pudding. The seas can rise, the mountains can fall, the sun can expand and swallow us whole, but the Emmys will still be there, doing its absolute best to do the exact same thing as it did last year. One of the knottiest, darkest, most stylish programmes of the last 10 years, hot off a season that rivals anything that has ever been made. We all know how the Emmys work by now. The jubilant filler music, like when Murray Bartlett walked on stage to accept his Emmy for The White Lotus while American Authors’ “Best Day of My Life” played in the background. OK, so maybe Abbott Elementary‘s Cheryl Lee Ralph took a little too much time to get to the stage but her acceptance speech in the form of the song “Endangered Species” was definitely worth the wait. The zingers were savage (like Short confusing Martin with Angela Lansbury) and suggested that maybe NBC should have considered more stage time for the stars of Murders in the Building — and less ageist jokes from host Kenan Thompson, who quipped how it would take the men 15 minutes to get on stage, despite being positioned in the front row. You just knew it was the right decision because Michael Keaton, who won for Dopesick, immediately quipped, “don’t you have 90 of these?”
A key to good comedy is having a distinctive voice. Sheryl Lee Ralph, the former “Dreamgirls” actress who won best supporting comedy actress for “Abbott ...
“The Amazing Race” has won 10 times, “The Voice” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” each four times, and no show had won the category in its first season. “The White Lotus,” the hit HBO series that skewered the entitled behavior of wealthy vacationers, scooped up five Primetime Emmys, including the award for best limited series. The series, Netflix’s most watched new series ever, according to the streamer, was also up for the Emmy for best drama, an award “Succession” ultimately won. Both “Barry” and “What We Do in the Shadows,” two of TV’s best comedies, got shut out. The point of the show is the speeches! The show played off engaging winners like Quinta Brunson and Jennifer Coolidge while making plenty of time for inane “copaganda” segments and slow bits that went nowhere. This year’s broadcast included a massive Kia ad, smuggled in under the guise of a sketch about TV dialogue. Of its seven total nominations, one was for best comedy; had “Abbott” won, it would have been the first network comedy to do so since “Modern Family” in 2014. The rhythm of the show was weirdly off. Based on its performance in its first time out, “Abbott” should be a top Emmy contender for years to come. There was also, in the success of series like “Abbott Elementary,” evidence that the broadcasters still have some Emmy relevance left in them, even as prestige cable and streaming services claimed the biggest prizes. Along the way, there was the usual array of leaden gags, shameless commercialism and genuinely poignant moments that transcended all the award-show contrivance.
In a ceremony which was light on references to the Queen's death, Succession star Brian Cox reminded the hit show's creator Jesse Armstrong to "keep it ...
The fact that it is my first nomination, my first invitation to the awards and guess what? So, all of those people deserve a right to a home and be able to go back home and be welcomed. Other winners included Lizzo, who won the Emmy for best competition series, for her Amazon show Watch Out For The Big Grrrls. Royal drama The Crown, which dominated the 2021 awards, was not televised within the eligibility period and so was forced to sit this year out. Hwang also made history as the first Asian to win in his category. Goldstein said of the show backstage: "I know that all of us would happily do this for 20 years. The Canadian consulate had also postponed its Emmy celebrations ahead of the ceremony in respect to the Queen. It hit me far worse than I thought it would and the enormous pressure that our king has on his shoulders now. Former Roseanne star Laurie Metcalf took best guest actress in a comedy show too. Evidently a bit more voting involved in our winning than for Prince Charles."
The Television Academy honored a broadcast comedy and a foreign-language upstart, but mostly brought a parade of familiar faces to the stage.

(And nobody in the Academy seemed to care that the (*) Initially, it seemed as if the music only kicked in when someone past their allotted time was reading off a list of names. But mostly what made it great is that Sheryl Lee Ralph is great on that show and in life, and her response to winning — beating reigning champ [Hannah Waddingham](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/hannah-waddingham-emmy-supporting-actress-comedy-win-ted-lasso-1235015360/) and several other Ted Lasso actresses — was an award-worthy spectacle in and of itself. She was frozen at first, and eventually costar Tyler James Williams helped steer her to the stage, where she again stood silent for what seemed like an eternity, especially on a night when so many other winners seemed terrified of the clock. The easiest way to win an Emmy is to have already won an Emmy, and the last few Emmy ceremonies were rendered tedious by a handful of shows hoovering up every trophy in sight. The telecast itself was a pretty dire production as usual, with even Thompson’s trademark gameness failing to elevate most of the dumb material he was given, and with lots of other bad choices in terms of comedy sketches or presentations.
Brett Goldstein, who plays sweary Roy Kent, relapses into profanity in 'second-chance' acceptance speech.
Goldstein, who was born in Sutton, Surrey, and studied film at Warwick University, was hired as a writer by the Ted Lasso team. Jason Sudeikis, the show’s creator and star, won best lead actor in a comedy series. Ted Lasso centres on an eponymous NFL coach who moves to England to coach a struggling Premier League football team.

At the 2022 Emmys, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Lizzo's speeches proved how much the show depends on letting winners have their moments.
As much as anyone tunes into the Emmys these days, it’s to see the people who make television get their moment in the spotlight and listen to what they have to say. When winners actually got the chance to be themselves and let the chyron do the requisite industry rounds for them, the Emmys came as close as they have in recent memory to getting the balance right. Instead, they whizzed by underneath as she told the story of growing up wishing “to see someone fat like me, Black like me, beautiful like me.” [John Oliver](https://variety.com/t/john-oliver/), accepting the seventh(!) consecutive Emmy for “Last Week Tonight,” could switch it up a little bit with a cheeky shoutout in the scroll to his absent staff (“thank you, and don’t worry: we’ll say hello to Oscar Isaac for you”).

Undeniably the most sublime of all was [Ralph’s acceptance speech](https://www.vulture.com/2022/09/emmys-2022-sheryl-lee-ralph-sings-acceptance-speech.html), when she launched into “Endangered Species,” using every molecule of oxygen in her lungs to celebrate her first Emmy win after years of working on the stage and screen. The rare time Zedd played something perfectly evocative of the past year in TV — Kate Bush’s [“Running Up That Hill”](https://www.vulture.com/tags/running-up-that-hill/) — it came during a moment that had absolutely nothing to do with Stranger Things. It was emotional, inspirational, the sort of spontaneous expression that makes you appreciate what it’s like to watch a talent be overtaken by their gift on live television. In other words, the Emmys felt different and the same, filled with familiar characters as well as shout-outs to shows that some people didn’t even know existed. And while a lot of the major winners were predictable, this year’s awards also reflected the wide spectrum of places to find good television. There was a sense that the voters, as well as the producers, had decided to try some things. [Elaborately dressed](https://www.vulture.com/2022/09/emmys-red-carpet-2022-photos.html) actors and creators accepted trophies, some of them well deserved (Sheryl Lee Ralph!), some of them less so (a directing award for a Ted Lasso episode instead of that episode of Barry with the motorcycle chase?). These served as reminders that, as much as television is about great storytelling and allowing audiences to feel seen, it’s also being made in an environment where every network and streaming conglomerate is more desperate than ever for money and eyeballs. [A lot of those trophies](https://www.vulture.com/2022/09/emmys-2022-winners-full-list.html) went to shows that have won before — Ted Lasso, Succession, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver (which nabbed Outstanding Variety Talk Series for the seventh consecutive year), and Saturday Night Live (named Outstanding Variety Sketch Series for the sixth year in a row). After a largely virtual ceremony in 2020 and one held half-indoors and half-outdoors because of a rise in COVID-19 cases in 2021, this was the first “normal” Emmy Awards in three years. And it was normal in a lot of ways. Yeah, [the Emmys don’t make sense sometimes](https://www.vulture.com/2022/07/emmy-award-nominations-limited-series-limitations.html).

Watch out, indeed. There were big wins too for Michael Keaton and Amanda Seyfried, who won best actor and actress in a limited series for their performances in Dopesick and The Dropout respectively. Ozark's Julia Garner also secured her third win as best supporting actress in a drama for the final ever season of the Netflix show. Jung-jae also became the first Asian star to win an Emmy for best male actor in a drama series. Supporting actor Brett Goldstein also secured his second Emmy win in a row for his portrayal of assistant coach Roy Kent in the UK-based show. Meanwhile the phenomenally popular Ted Lasso starring Jason Sudeikis won outstanding comedy series and best leading actor in a comedy series for a second consecutive year.

Sun is still very much up there in the sky—so opting for sunglasses on the red carpet is also, ultimately, a practical choice. (Despite 46 nominations in six seasons, “Better Call Saul” has yet to win an Emmy.) “It’s hard to explain,” Lynskey said of the attention she was receiving. “Thank you,” she echoed, bashfully. There was a standing ovation and the longest applause of the night when she took the stage. “Great,” she roared with all her might, trophy in hand, at Governors Ball. Jason Sudeikis, actor and creator of “Ted Lasso,” held two.
