The overall purse at Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, England, is $8 million with the winner earning $1.35 million.

Whoever emerges will enjoy a nice reward, with the first-place prize money payout outside of London at $1.36 million from an overall purse of $8 million. Or can Rory McIlroy, one shot back and fresh off his impressive victory at the Tour Championship to grab the FedEx Cup title, ride that momentum to his first win on the former European Tour since 2019 and first in a non-WGC event since 2016? It also changed the narrative that drove the tournament in its early days, namely [a tense confluence](https://www.golfdigest.com/story/billy-horschel-liv-golfers-bmw-pga-championship-wentworth) of more than a dozen LIV Golf participants competing in the DP World Tour’s flagship event.

They insist in taking part in such tournaments, taking the place of players who need those spots in order to attempt to make a living from the sport. How can someone who was a legend in European golf lose all respect for being so utterly selfish! [@DPWorldTour]players by posing for a photo at US college football game after withdrawing from [@BMWPGA]following the opening round. Hard to express reaction at Wentworth to Sergio Garcia’s withdrawal after a 1st round 76, giving no reason. As it turns out, his fellow countryman Alfredo Farcia Heredia was the unfortunate one to miss out. As well as that, his wife attended Texas, where her father was also a star quarterback in the 1970s.

Rory McIlroy keeps the pace at the BMW PGA Championship (The National)

THE show goes on. The resumption of play in the BMW PGA Championship was widely embraced; the tributes to Queen Elizabeth II respectfully delivered.

“I don't hit it a long way but if I hit it solidly and I and hit it into the fairway, it's possible for me to compete,” he said of his canny approach. At 605th in the world and 147th on the DP World Tour rankings, Kjeldsen may not have been many folks tip for success this week but he knows how to get it round this place, having notched a couple of top-10s here down the years. “Billy (Foster, Matt Fitzpatrick’s caddie) said to me, ‘who did you pay to throw the ball out of there?’,” chuckled McIlroy of that flirtation with out of bounds. “That’s been the difference for me this year, being able to hole those putts for par and being able to keep grinding it out. “Those par saves were huge for momentum,” reflected McIlroy of the importance of those moments. While Kjeldsen’s 64 was wonderfully assembled after a bogey on the opening hole, McIlroy’s 65 was another of his captivating spectacles as he joined Rafa Cabrera Bello and Thomas Detry on the 11-under mark.

Sergio Garcia withdraws from BMW PGA Championship to attend ... (AS English)

With no official word on why he withdrew, we can only theorize as to why the 2017 Masters winner, opted to attend a college football game instead.

In addition, there were also [Nino Bertasio](https://www.europeantour.com/players/nino-bertasio-35602/) and [Andrea Pavan ](https://www.europeantour.com/players/andrea-pavan-35329/)who called it quits in the middle of their rounds as well. While it’s clear that the Spaniard hasn’t been popular among some of his peers since defecting to LIV Golf, there is likely not much more to this scenario that what’s already been discussed. What is more probable is that between the untimely passing of Britain’s Queen and the subsequent postponement of the tournament, García simply opted to cut his losses in order to attend a friend and fellow golfer’s award presentation. The 2017 Masters winner was accompanied by his wife, Angela as well as 2022 Masters winner Scottie Scheffler and his wife, Meredith. According to an announcement on Saturday, Sergio García withdrew from the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in Surrey, England. As mentioned before, there has been no official word on why García withdrew and exactly why he went all the way to Texas, but it’s worth noting that Scheffler who is a Texas alumnus, was presented with the PGA Tour’s Player of the Year award on ESPN’s College GameDay before kickoff.

Lynch: Sergio Garcia bolsters his reputation for unprofessionalism ... (usatoday.com)

So why did Garcia enter a tournament at which he wasn't welcome, played on a course he doesn't like?

There were other WDs, but Garcia was the only LIV member to commandeer a precious spot in the field and then abandon it after 18 indifferent holes. So why did Garcia enter a tournament at which he wasn’t welcome, played on a course he doesn’t like? In Thursday’s first round, Garcia shot a 76 that had him firmly at the arse-end of the leaderboard. Garcia’s professed support of the DP World Tour has never been much in evidence at its flagship event, where he has appeared only twice in the past 22 years. In the almost 20 years that elapsed before that major win finally came, Garcia didn’t mature, his only growth apparent in a disposition that became more sullen, more entitled, more petulant and more unprofessional. The BMW PGA Championship, for example, which was held this week in England.
