Carol Gregory and her husband, from Birmingham, had diverted from a planned holiday in Inverness to Ballater, draping a union flag across the metal crowd barriers opposite the church. From Ballater, the cortege travelled eastwards along the winding, single-lane A93 through a succession of villages – Aboyne, Banchory and Peterculter. The first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, will attend a party leaders’ gathering at parliament to observe the coffin passing. Some phones were raised to capture the moment but many others preferred to watch without screens as the coffin passed, draped in the Royal Standard of We’d often see her about locally, and the community always respected her privacy. Florence, 11, said they had seen the Queen in her car, while five-year-old Gracie guarded closely their sharing tub of sweeties. She had travelled here on Sunday morning with her two daughters and three grandchildren. “It would have been her wish to die here,” added McLeod.

“The grief we have seen across the world has been profound and deeply touching. As the hearse drove by I definitely felt emotional." So the Queen was very much part of my life. It first passed through the nearby town of Ballater at approximately 10.20am. ITV News Ben Chapman reports on the journey so far. "I think Aberdeenshire meant a lot to the Royal Family and the Royal Family meant a lot to Aberdeenshire.

Shortly afterwards, the hearse emerged from the gates of Balmoral to head towards the Scottish capital. Her coronation took place a year later. The slow cortege is the first of a series of events leading up to the state funeral at Westminster Abbey in London on September 19th. The coffin was draped in the royal standard of Scotland and with a wreath on top made up of flowers from the Balmoral estate, including sweet peas – one of the queen’s favourites.

Many people brought their children so they could bear witness to the historic moment. Public viewing of the coffin will start on Monday, before Princess Anne flies to London with her mother's body on Tuesday. Draped with the Royal Standard of Scotland and featuring a wreath of flowers on top, the oak coffin is travelling from the royal castle, through the Aberdeenshire countryside, to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Well-wishers in Scotland have been saying goodbye to the Queen, with some throwing flowers into the path of her coffin as it makes its slow journey from Balmoral to Edinburgh.
