Does Garth Brooks really love us? An hour with the man shines a ... (thejournal.ie)

Brooks is a consummate showman who has identified something that Ireland needs.

That he truly, deeply cares about his fans in a way that is almost selfless. In his rapt, hyper-eye-contact, televangelist sort of way, Brooks seems to have identified something in us that perhaps we are not aware of. In turn, we tend to be a nation that snipes at our taller poppies, disliking them irrationally until they do something to vindicate us. If there is some psycho-social explanation for Ireland’s affinity with the Oklahoman, perhaps it is the lack of reciprocal love we share with our own superstars. That he’s a man who’d rather walk away from an enormous payday than prioritise one night of ticket-holders over another. But if we do accept that he is sincere, or at least concede that it doesn’t matter much whether he is or not, Brooks cuts a compelling figure. To that effect, he railed against musicians who insist on playing their new music when fans want to hear the classics. He is the first and only artist in history to receive nine RIAA Diamond Awards. His persona is the perfect inversion of the jaded rockstar stereotype. When asked if he has plans to eat or drink anywhere special, he demurs. When asked if he’d be staying in Kerry, he said that he simply didn’t know. Since his career kicked off in the late 1980s, Brooks has sold 157 million albums.

Why does Ireland love Garth Brooks so much? (The Irish Times)

In the News podcast: The man in the big old hat is back and close to half a million people are ready for the Dance.

Issues over licensing saw the five concerts become three and then none as tomorrow never came and what promised to be the musical happening of 2014 turned into a shambles thatis destined to play a starring role on Reeling In The Years for all the wrong reasons for the rest of eternity. The first time – way back in 2014 – did not end well either for the singer with friends in low places, his legion of fans all over Ireland, the then Taoiseach Enda Kenny or even the Mexican ambassador who offered to act as a peace maker to see if the concerts could go ahead as planned. There aren’t many artists who would sell out five nights in Croke Park in a heartbeat and draw more than 400,000 people to their warm musical embrace.

I just love country music. Brooks was due to play five concerts in 2014 but the gigs were cancelled following a licensing dispute with locals around the venue and the local authorities. There was a sea of Stetsons in the streets near the stadium on Friday evening as 80,000 people attend the opening night of Brooks’ concerts in Dublin. The music legend, who is wearing a black Stetson and jeans, broke down in tears as he told the crowd he had come on stage for one reason and that was to “raise hell”. “Tell me it’s going to be like this the whole night long,” he said, adding he just wanted to “enjoy the moment”. The roof, metaphorically, shatters with his rendering of Shallow, Lady Gaga's Star is Born song.

During the show, he stirred the audience to such a level that the noise recorded on the university’s seismograph registered as an earthquake. Friends in Low Places and The Dance end the main section of the show, and then it’s all thanks and tears again. Brooks strolls on stage — specially constructed and shipped in from the US for his five Dublin performances — as if he owns the joint. All of the songs they know and love, he says, will be played. The implication is that Brooks is not only fully in control but that the audience is intentionally allowing him to do with them what he will. And so the show begins (albeit 30 minutes after the official start time of 7.30) with, it must be said, a mighty wallop.

Review: Tears from Garth Brooks as he takes to the stage for long ... (thejournal.ie)

IT'S RARE THAT a musician cries on stage during a stadium gig – but if you're Garth Brooks, you cry not once, but five times. Yes, five times.

Tonight was a rare moment to sink into the pure goodness of live music, shepherded by a man who just wants us to feel the love. The band themselves, most of whom have played with Brooks for years, looked like good pals just happy to have a jam. And it wasn’t himself he was talking about – it was the crowd. If you’re a Garth Brooks fan, you’ll have got what you wanted tonight: a musician who really, truly wanted to be there. Of the hits, Friends in Low Places was predictably a highlight, the crowd really getting into it as green, white and orange streamers rained down from on high. That Brooks could have gone on for another 30 minutes and kept a happy crowd was a sign of how entertaining his live shows are. There was nothing bombastic about the setup, but everything from the lighting to the staging tonight felt measured, down-to-earth. He genuinely feeds off the crowd’s love, and it’s that which makes it hard to be cynical about how much he wanted to return here. Brooks told us about his worries, too – about how he’d feared that the gigs weren’t what he wanted them to be, how we had no idea how many miles he’d travel just to hear us sing (us? The semi-circle stage was covered with a half-shell of wire and steel. All Day Long was a high-energy, honky tonk opener, with the on-point opening line of “Somebody’s gotta start the weekend”, like Brooks was setting out his intention to elevate fans’ days off this week. Multiple times, Brooks reminded us of how glad he was to finally be here.

“THIS is as good as I want it to be!” In the end, it is safe to say that we got the “musical extravaganza” that we were promised. You’ve been waiting for it and waiting for it and it’s never as good as you want it to be,” Garth Brooks told the ecstatic crowd at one stage, raising his fists. After the “debacle” of 2014, as he put it, when a licensing dispute meant he did not play Croke Park as planned, it seemed as though the country singer was genuinely thrilled to be back in Ireland, and his audience was happy to have him. Brooks’ ‘The Thunder Rolls’ stood out as one of his darker songs and was introduced by the singer with a reference to the previously less promising weather forecast. "It’s like I waited for this concert my whole damn life," the superstar told the ecstatic crowd, and the show truly was worth the wait.
